Hey, this is fun. I was reading an article in Rolling Stone last night about the refreshing-ness of serialized series- like 24- "in a world full of stand-alone procedurals like CSI and Law & Order. They then write this:

Quote:

Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, remembers what one exec told him while he was working on Firefly, his short-lived space western: "They said, 'We don't like stories that unfold here at Fox.' I was like, 'How else do stories work? Do you experience time teleologically and it all happens at once?'"

Ah, that Joss. A clever one, he is.

I couldn't find the article anywhere online, so I guess you'll just have to check page 36 of the issue with Justin Timberlake in a wet t-shirt on the cover...He looks a little stoned in my opinion- but I digress.
Firefly gets a little plug in Rolling Stone and that is oh-so-cool. :)

If that recollection is true (which I'm sure it is), it just reiterates what we already know....Fox prefers dumbed down television that pulls in viewers with no intellectual investment on their part.

Very interesting, considering many cable networks and even the other broadcast networks are starting to go serialized. Fox, once again, stays behind in the stone age.

Actually, the article was saying that Fox and other networks are starting to embrace serialized dramas now. And, apparently, continuing on after the resolution of the main story arch has been a problem for some shows. They mention Prison Break as an example. Lost is a prime example in my opinion. They seemed to know where they wanted to go, but it was such a hit, the network has forced them to draw it out.

Not only does that quote make them sound stupid, but it makes them hypocrites. A year earlier, they greenlit 24 and not only let them have a full season, but let them keep the real time format for the next season.

"I have no reason to believe you and every reason not to."
"Why's that?"
"You work in television."

I have only one thing to say about that:
Fox sure is dumb.

Yep. But I'm kinda wondering if maybe Joss took a bit of a liberty with the exact wording of that quote.
I mean, they do seem idiodic, but would they really say, "we don't like stories that unfold?"
Crazy.
