While I would be overjoyed were this true, somehow I think Yahoo News has jumped the gun. Or perhaps their definition of 'production' differs.

You could say the movie is 'in production' from the standpoint that a script is written and they are trying to get a deal finialized. This we all know.
However what we are looking for is word that the movie has indeed been greenlit and is moving ahead.

Personally, I think Yahoo News jumped to conclusions here.

That, and I am sure if the movie does get the 'go ahead', I am willing to bet a large sum of money that Joss (or someone from ME) will let us know within minutes of the announcement.

Here's hoping...

well we know from comments made by joss himself that the script isn't finished to his liking yet..so do i think this news is a bit premature? yuuuup

as for family guy, you've jumped the gun and mis-read the news article. (edit: nope it was me who mis-read i do apoligise..but i think they've got it wrong anyway)

As is known now, Family guy is back in production with a new set of episodes set to appear at the end of 2004, thanks to it's huge sucess on dvd, not just in the us but abroad also.

did anyone ever see "The Ben Stiller Show"? I didn't even realize the DVDs were available. It was brilliant and hilarious -- another unjust cancellation.

Give it a shot if you can. :)

Looking at the quote carefully...

Quote:

A "Firefly" film, written by Whedon, is currently in production for Fox and Universal Pictures.

...it appears to me that the author Jill Kipnis was making a broad statement and didn't check her facts. As far as we have been told, Fox has given Universal full autonomy over the film and are not involved in the movie project. I wouldn't put much stock in this passing and seemingly inaccurate statement. Joss will let us know when filming is to begin (which is the only event which leads to a high probablity of a theatrical release).

Yes, I believe that this article, sadly, is going off of incomplete facts. Seems that it's happened a lot with news on this project.

America loves a winner!

When 'in production' is replaced with 'filming' to describe the project, THEN I'll get excited. Not before then.

Someone privy to important information regarding Firefly?

Or a reporter making up the news?

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I agree that the author of the article seems not to have confirmed their facts. The last word from Joss was that the script is done and in Universal's hands. I have not seen or heard any official word of the movie being in production yet.

I loved the Ben Stiller Show when it was on the air. Yet another show killed off by Fox.

Sadly, I suspect you all are right.
However, it gave me a sudden surge of hope and if positive thinking could make a difference ...
I'll try to hang on to that hope a little bit longer.

Hang tough Browncoat. If recent scuttlebutt can be believed, a "reliable" source is telling us now that Universal is onboard for the movie, and the only delay now is with the distributor.

I dunno about the whole "jumping the gun" idea. The article cites Reuters as it's source...

Reuters is merely one of the major newswires. It's not an infallible source of information.

I've decided not to get overexcited about a movie until I'm _absolutely sure_ there's gonna be one. To paraphrase Terry Pratchett, I wouldn't bet on a movie happening until I'm sitting down in the theater with popcorn in my hands, and even then I wouldn't bet more than a fiver. ;)

Script writing and getting it approved is called pre-production. Production is when the actual filming has started.

Unless it is a typo, I suspect that Reuters (who wrote the article and not Yahoo news) is right as they would have an inside scoop as to what is happening. But as I said, it could be a typo or a editorial mistake overlooked.

But I would definitely find it promising that Reuters has written an article that Firefly is production and not pre-production. There are big differences between the two and I would think that Reuters would make sure this information was right before publishing it. Though mistakes have happened in the past coughobituitariesofcelebritieswhowerenotdeadcough.

Well, anyhow, this is great news that someone has noticed the great DVD sales and that the movie has been cited as in production and not pre-production.

Here's to hoping.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Usually once a movie goes into production the studio will not end the project unless something goes terribiliy wrong. It is pre-production that usually is the killer of the movies and once past that point is pretty much well on its way to the theater. Though it has happened in the past that movies have been killed in the production phase (which is the filming part of the movie making for those that don't know) it is very, very rare.

But once we hear that Firefly is entering post-production that we are pretty much insured that the movie will hit the big screen unless something terrible goes wrong and it is even rarer that a movie is ended in post-production than production.

Note: I know these facts as I am currently a Broadcast Communication Major.

Pre-Production - Script-writing, storyboard drawn up, idea pitched to studios (called a Treament), hiring of cast and crew, building sets and picking film locations, figuring out how much money the movie needs to be made and figuring out where that money will come from.

Production - Actual filming of the movie. (This is what the Reuters news article said the current phase of the movie was in; if true, this is promising news indeed.)

Post-Production - Editing, final touches (ie. reshooting scenes, adding in special effects, sound effects, and music score), advertisments.

And if production has begun for the movie and Joss is director and probably a producer then he is probably a busy man and won't have the time to post announcements.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Some say yes, some no. Personally, I am not sure.

Rumor control has it as anything from problems w/ "the distributor" to legalities and percentages. No telling until we get more news.
