Powers in the 'Verse ... commentary and debate

Hey Browncoats!

Most of you may know I am working on a spin-off of Firefly called Dragonfly. Both as an OnLine Role Playing Game {OLRPG} and a Indie film short (as a trailer).

So I was thinking through all of Joss' 'Power Archetypes' and found one missing or unmentioned.

Here are the ones we know of (If I haven't missed any)

Alliance
Big Government out of control.

Blue Sun
Uber-Corporation, science gone mad.

Reavers
Barbarians, or in other words -- "Those who don't belong and hate all that civilization represents."

Companions
Babylonian Religion - Psychoanalysts/Sex Surrogates?
Hard one to define with the info we have, but they seem to be a definite Power.

Niska's 'Enclave'
Organized Crime.
I am calling it The Enclave, just to have a reference other than Niska or Mafia.

The Power that is undefined is the Extreme Religious Right or simply Fanatics.

After watching "Brotherhood of the Wolf" (excellent French film!!!) I have decided to define this group for my spin-off Dragonfly as 'The Wolves of God' for the time being.

Thus...

Wolves of God
Religious Fanatics of any stripe. Will do ABSOLUTELY anything to force their ideology on everyone.

So, what do ya'll think?

Or should I say ...

... Now ya can pull yer pieces and begin shootin' at Cap'n Rahn!

Interestingly, the only hint at religion that I can bring to mind is Shepherd Book. Apparently he reads the Bible (which River tried to "fix") and is a follower of Jesus (which he made reference to in HoG). Apparently Christianity is still around. But Book doesn't seem to be a religious extremist. Can anybody else think of any religion being present in Firefly?

MISGUIDED BY VOICES


To some extent, the Reavers represent the religious fanatics.

"Safe" has a Puritanical religious tone to it - via The Crucible.

Yeah, I really don't see much reference to a fanatical religious movement in the Firefly 'verse. First, Book doesn't exactly beat people over the head with his Bible (he does with his fists, but not because of religion, heh) and the folks in "Safe" seem to be more of a fringe group, rarely encountered. Granted, we don't have many episodes to go by, but if you want to include a fanatical religious group danger in your RPG, I'd suggest making it more of a random space hazard rather than a definite power.

Second, I was under the impression that Niska's group was powerful, but not necessarily unique. I'd wager that there are a few organized crime syndicates in the 'verse, (remember the Asian gang memebers on Persephone?) but Niska is definitely a major player.

Third, you might not want to forget some of the more shadowy powers that we didn't get to see yet. For instance, Simon makes reference to a resistance group that helped him spring his sister from the government "academy." Obviously they have a great deal of influence and resources at their disposal to be able to abscond with so valuable an asset as River.

Fourth, didn't I hear in the commentaries that Blue Sun more or less was the government? I think the blue hands on the "two-by-two-hands-of-blue" guys are more than purely coincidental.

Maybe the Alliance is just the whole name ... Like United States.

And Blue Sun is the 'controlling' organization, not necessarly the goverment.

There was a woman in one of those body covering Islamic dress in "The Train Job" in the seats aft of Mal and Zoe. So its safe to assume that Islam either Religiously or Culturally is in the Firefly 'Verse.
