It's been a strange week. I first watched the Serenity movie about a week ago. I felt like a kid again. Got the Serenity episode from iTunes & watched that, but in the meantime I have to step back for a while.

I'm new here, but this seems like the one place where people will appreciate where I'm coming from. I've always been prone to passing obsessions with fictional females and/or actresses (to say nothing of real ones, but that's another topic altogether), but at the moment I am dealing with the death of a family member, an aunt who cared for me a great deal when I was very young. That, in turn, has somehow fueled my current Firefly craze. Clearly, Kaylee, besides being just freakin' hot (as are the others, mind you), is the very essence of a caring nurturer, so something in my psyche has latched on and has been difficult to overcome.

More generally, the whole Firefly phenomenon is oddly parallel to my current experience. One of the overarching themes of Firefly fandom is a certain grief that the show was taken away prematurely and will probably never come back. Letting go is always a great challenge. It's just funny that the one thing that I latched onto to distract myself from pain brought me right back to where I was trying to get away from. Probably not a bad thing, I guess.

Kaylee broke my heart by not being real. Jewel Staite is real, but she is not Kaylee. I shouldn't really blame the girl, but I keep recalling the words of the Captain. To paraphrase slightly: "My heart don't break. If my heart breaks, you broke it."

Anyway, here's to the great hope, that someday the crew will ride again. Nice to meet y'all.

Welcome to the 'Verse. Just to tell ya, they're not really "Serenity" episodes, but Firefly episodes - but that's okay.

I'm really sorry to hear about your aunt. I know what it feels like to lose someone close to you, and I sincerely hope everything turns out to the best it can be after such a tragedy.

Once again, welcome to the 'Verse, and fly on, fellow Browncoat!

(P.S., I know how you feel about Kaylee, too - only for me it's Simon.... or Wash... or Mal... or Jayne... probably not Book...)

First off, sorry to hear about your aunt.

I get what you're saying about Kaylee though, I was first getting into Firefly after a nasty break up and gravitated to Inara and River mostly, but Kaylee as well.

plus the theme kinda hit be a'right too, but it's a great community to find one's self a part of.

I can kill you with my brain...

Hiya Mink, its real shiny to have you on board. Sorry for your loss.
Second that understatement! I was lucky enough to meet Jewel at Serenity3 2 weeks ago (has it been that long already!) Even though she plays Kaylee she is just as lovely!
Once again, welcome. Glad you've found the show and all of us.

Don't get me wrong, River is crazy sexy. I want to have a sleepover with Ms. Glau. That said, I am a married man, so you may never quote me on this.

River and Kaylee are but two aspects of the many-faced godess that is the Firefly crew, female side. The other two...cut me some slack here, I can only process so much at once.

VERSEEXPLORER

Welcome Aboard, Mink,
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you feel at home here. We are a friendly group.

You mentioned that you saw the movie and the Serenity episode of Firefly. Does that mean that you haven't watched the other ones yet? If you haven't, you've got 13 wonderful episodes to come. Sorry to hear that Kaylee broke your heart, but she does love to meet new people.

Anyway there's always someone around, so if you feel like chatting get on the Cortex and send us a wave.

Shrouded, watch out for those floating invisible "s"s. They might get you in trouble.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the site & the fandom Mink! Glad to have you here and amongst the ranks of the browncoats.

Thanks for sharing your obsession with us. For me it was not one of the females, but the 'verse itself. The setting, the underlying message of freedom and doing anything to stay free, and the closeness of the crew is what did it for me. When it ended it was like someone was denying me that 'verse.

Of course you know that as a browncoat you must spread the word. You must share the show and the movie "Serenity" with everyone you know. You must introduce the 'verse to every single person you can get to sit down and watch it. You need to buy "Serenity" dvds, give them as gifts, loan them to people and convince people what a great investment they are.

Sorry about your aunt. I can understand what you are going through. My condolences.

Take care & keep flyin'!

Yeah, well, it all goes together, don't it? At heart I just thought it was a damn well-conceived movie that I could instantly add to my favorites list and was worthy of success and sequels.

Then again, sequels can be incredibly lame. The movie does work on its own, and the love of the devoted fans is a form of success.

I guess it just didn't suck enough to appeal to the masses.

All of the Firefly women have their own kind of sexiness. I'd date River Tam schizophrenia and all if she were a little older. However, no one is as appealing to me as Kaylee. I too regret that she's only fictional, but am comforted by the fact that my wife is *almost* as cute.

No Doubt , this shiny crew WILL ride again !

Now Jewel Staite is real . If we can't have Kaylee , she might do , might do . In fact , were she unwed , I would take her in a manly fashion . Because she's pretty .

Whoa , dude ! If you need an obsession for the moment , you gotta check out 'Flyboys' .

There's an amazing and beautiful young actress , Jennifer Decker , who plays a French girl named Lucienne . Double obsession for me , the face of one former love and the eyes of another .

BTW , Mink - Gotta say Welcome . You're home now , Brother .

Keep the Faith . Share the Love . Feel the Joy !

I loved how when they were looking for passengers to help pay for things ships need to fly, like gas, they put Kaylee out front spinning her cute little hypno-umbrella to attract people to their ship. I thought she was very cute before, but that scene just did it for me... I think I fell in love.

Don't know why, but this post got me thinking that maybe Kaylee hypnotized me into watching the show and loving it so much like I do. Probably not, because it's so freakin great anyways, but now that I've seen her doing that, I'll never know how much I would have loved the show without that one very special scene.

Wow, my thread is still alive. [shameless bump]

Well, wives, actresses ... it's all good. (I'm feeling better, anyway.)

As to the appeal of the 'verse itself, I've only seen the BDM and the pilot, and I would say it's refreshingly original enough, but not exactly groundbreaking. Good, but not the greatest strength.

As is just about everything, it is made up of bits and pieces of things we've seen many times before.

The greatest strength to my mind is the characters, the dialogue and the acting. I'm sure that I am at least the 357,432nd person to make a comparison to Star Wars, and here's where it's at: it reminded me a lot of "Star Wars". The cast of unknowns was fresh and enthusiastic, and delivered a constant barrage of dry humor in every terrifying situation. They had chemistry.

Later efforts in the franchise are notoriously bankrupt of any level of spontaneous, fresh wit. Great concepts, great characters, but no fun, and not a hint of sparks between Darth and Padme. And I surely need not name the actors that stood out as being god-awful. Loved McGregor, though. He tried real hard to make it work.

The other flick that "Serenity" reminded me of was "Alien". Not many wisecracks there, but that was probably the last movie that featured a crew in a ship that one could honestly believe was actually being lived in.

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Hi Mink - welcome to the family of FFF.net - this place is really special and as you watch the other episodes (you have so much shininess to fall in love with - I almost envy you!) you will understand that we forgive you for not understanding quite how groundbreaking it is yet - the difference with this series is that no other Sci Fi series has ever dealt with such real people in such human situations before... it is the pinacle of such a genre! *sigh*

I think that is partly why Kaylee broke your heart and (although I am a girl & not in lust with Kaylee) she kind of broke my heart too now that I think about it! I watched the pilot episode with some resistance - why would I want to start watching a series that didn't get past the first 14 episodes? When Kaylee kissed Mal on the cheek and said "I love my captain" I knew I was already home - I am so like Kaylee in that I show affection for my friends and family and could really relate to her in that moment - when events unfolded for her I was striken with horror at the thought that my (already0 favourite character might not last the first episode. (Hey - Joss killed off Jessie in Buffy, remember?)

Welcome again Mink - you should really get a Browncoat from FollowMal & we should serve you some delicious juicy strawberries... then we can all sit here with you and you can share memories of your Aunt - coz you're family now and we're all here for you, and so sorry to hear that you're going through this.

Keep posting! See you around! Magda x x x
