I imagine that the basketball-type game stirred the athletes: The dinosaur battle sent the paleo-geeks into a frenzy: Kaylee's floral motifs bring out the Martha Stewart crowd.

I've been studying belly dance for several years and thoroughly enjoyed the 25 seconds of belly dance in "Train Job".

What interest, hobby or other geek-centric activity shown on the show made you sit up and say, "Neato Burrito".

I'd have to say living on a space ship sounds pretty appealing to me.

Hmmmm. . .so many things really appealed to me.

I loved watching them play ball in the cargo bay. . .it looked like a cross between Basketball and the game "triad" that was played in the original Battlestar Galactica. I never saw the new miniseries because I'm here in the 'Stan.

I was very intrigued by the card game, I wish I could have seen more to try to figure out a rule or two. . .it seemed to be very much like 'hearts' or 'spades'. . .and it was so nice to see Simon bonding as 'one of the guys'.

I also ALWAYS ALWAYS loved seeing that Book and Jayne would work out together. . .the MOST unlikely 'buddy' combination in the whole crew, but there they are. . .and you KNOW they're really good buddies. That's also made evident in "Objects", by the conversation they're having. Notice that Book is just a little more 'frank' with Jayne. . .a little less 'aloof and priestly'?

I was impressed with the scene of Mal cleaning his guns at the table. . .it shows that Joss and Tim don't take certain things for granted, like the fact that frequently used firearms require maintenance. Good to see that Mal is still a soldier in that respect. We may sometimes forget to brush our teeth, but NEVER forget to clean our weapon.

First off: Good luck, keep your head down, stay safe.

I spent 10 years in the Air Force and I always enjoy the "givens" of military life in "Firefly".
Gina Torres is wonderful and her automatic "Captain" to Mal is a sign of respect - not the affectation so many actors put into military roles or speak. She says it like she means it.

I did enjoy that weight lifting scene with Jayne and Book.

*sigh* I miss the show terribly.

Can you use 'companion' as a verb? Cuz that would get my vote. I mean, the Calvinball in "Bushwacked" was fun and everything, but which one would you rather be doing right now?

I like when they're paying cards in Shindig. And the Calvinball. Hoo-ray for Calvinball!

I'm a paleo-geek! Three cheers! (Hears crickets in the background) Bound to happen.

I also noticed something. Evryone refers to the meat-eater as a T. rex, but it's more appropriatly an Allosaurus. It has three fingers.

Though I show no interest, I love it when River's dancing in Safe. Just so wonderful.

I'm not sure if I'd like to be 'companioning' (too much fru-farrah, as Zoe would say), although I wouldn't mind being a 'companion-ee'

Huzzah! Paleo-geek here, too!! I'm also sort of an... Ethno-geek, I guess. I love the blending of Chinese and American cultures, and for some reason I really love the bit in Jaynestown when Simon goes off about how mudder's milk is like the liquid bread the Egyptians used to drink.

I play the viola (like the violin, only bigger) and I sing, so I loooooove the music. The piece at the end of The Message really got me, really deeply moved me in a way I've never had happen with a TV show.

I watched Shindig with commentary and the costume-designer-whose-name-I-forget said that Kaylee's hoops under her skirt were from the King & I, and that Mal's suspenders are WWII, and I thought that was pretty neato swell. And it also partially explains why I like those suspenders so much...heh. It does not, however, explain why I love the boots.

I know it seems obvious, but I just like the costumes. Crew, supporting cast, extras, everything. They can get pretty detailed, and they do what clothes are supposed to do, i.e.,express some personality/mental aspect of the person wearing them. Although I do occasionally wonder where in hell's name Simon got the clothing for River -- maybe he just went to Salvation Army and grabbed the first things he saw? They do tend to fit River's state of mind now, but I can't really see the clothes she wears being stuff he brought from home.

The card game was good.
I think it may be a mixture of cards and marjong.

I havn't played marjong in many years but the "plum" flow card rang a bell.

I would have to say the duel in Shindig. I used to Fence and it was great to see them use actual techniques, well at least Atherton did. And yeah for some one mentioning Calvinball ( I never thought I would see that word out side the comic!

I know what did this...

one word....HORSESHOES !

My dad played often when I was little...always intrigued me...He's gone now but I loved seeing the crew play regular games

Also, about the card game, Jane E said she had to make up a legit game with rules and such for Adam, Ron and Sean because they wanted a real game to play...Maybe she'll share it with us browncoats...

The 'Stan...that would be Afghanistan, presumably. I was there with the original group of Marines and SEALs that took over Kandahar Airport. Keep your head down.

The one thing I really liked was Kaylee chasing river all over the ship for the apple in the beginning of War Stories (least, I think that was the ep). It's just nice to see how playful they can be when they're not "deep in the rough and tumble."

I'd have to go with Horseshoes. Didn't expect that, and yet it was something of a comfort.

Ah Afghanistan - that makes sense. I wasn't thinking in terms of military deployment; I assumed he was referring to his home country, and I didn't figure many Afghans for Firefly-fans.

My favorite activity was ... I guess what they were all doing at the end of OiS, spare Simon and his medics. Kaylee and River playing marbles, Jayne and Book working out as they talked...Early floating through space awaiting his inevitable asphyxiation...

I did think of that, simply because she doesn't have that many clothes, but then me & my friend were trying to decide who donated what and it turned into a whole, way too involved thing.

Actually, Kaylee and River are playing jacks -- I completely don't remember the rules, but I used to play jacks when I was little. Hardly any kids play it anymore, and I did like that they were.

Helpful hint: don't leave jacks lying in the carpet. Ever. It's worse than stepping on upside-down legoes.

I absolutely adore it anytime members of the crew are just sitting around and being normal - when Kaylee's teasing Simon or Simon's telling medacad stories or Zoe and Mal are sharing 'war stories' or Book and Jayne are razzing each other...

To me, it's these 'normal conversation' scenes that really set up the relationships between characters, and I love them. Lovelove.

Goin' on memory here. That would be "Safe." It's at the very end.

One of the cutest scenes ever, imo.

Let's see... I liked the dancing they were doing in 'Safe' that just looks like so much fun!! I also thought the basketball game looked fun. I mean, Jayne picked Kaylee up and put her on his shoulders... 'Nough said...

I also thought that ball was fun, once you got past the snobby brats... and the dresses... hate dresses... Course Inara was so pretty in that dress. And Mal was so handsome *sighs*

Anyway... what else... like someone else said, just living in the gorram ship is enough for me. I liked Wash's little dinosaur game: 'And we shall call it... this land.' I thought that was funny.

Another thing, I'd like to try fencing, looks quite painful though ;)

I Believe the game was called "Tall Card" and I think I found the rules at http://www.average-bear.com/wiki/index.php/TallCard however I cannot vouch for the authenticity of these rules.

(Quoting above link)
Quote:

Long Pai (Dragon Cards) follows Draw Poker rules unless otherwise stated.

6 suits (Plum, Peach, Orange, Apple, Apricot, Banana) of 12 cards (72 cards).

Ranks: 1-8 spots, Ace can be high or low. Face Cards: Tortoise, Unicorn, Phoenix, Dragon (The Ssu-ling "Heavenly Beasts" of Chinese myth)

In addition to the 72 regular rectangular cards there are 6 round cards called "Tall cards" one for each of the 6 suits.

The Dealer shuffles the regular cards and the player to the right of the Dealer shuffles the Tall cards.

The Tall card for that hand is revealed after everyone antes up. After the first round of betting, players can discard and draw up to 3 cards OR the face up Tall card can be claimed by a player instead of a discard/draw.

Claiming the Tall card allows the cards in one's hand, that are of the same suit as the Tall card, to become wild in rank. If the option goes around and the Tall is not claimed, the Dealer is forced to claim the Tall.

Another round of betting takes place and surviving players still in the game reveal their hands with the highest ranked hand taking the pot.

(One interesting thing to note is that "5 of a kind" is a possible hand in Long Pai, since there are more than 4 suits.)

I just love complicated cards games.

I wish I could get together with some like minded firefly fans and sit around and play cards and / or mahjoong.

If nothing else firefly has reminded me how much fun it used to be.
