New to this site (as well as to the Firefly series). I discovered Firefly/Serenity a couple of months ago. Like probably everyone else here, I bought the Firefly TV series and Serenity movie (including on HD DVD). I truly hope that Universal/NBC (both owned by same company) will either release Serenity 2 or bring back the TV series.

Being new to the site, I apologize if this has been posted already. But if not, for those of you that have the Universal HD cable channel (1860 in Upstate NY), Universal is showing the Firefly TV episodes on Sunday nights at 7:00 PM in HD. Tonight they’re showing “Bushwacked”. The quality is great. The episode is repeated at 12:00 AM.
Enjoy!

Did you know that Universal paid to have the
Firefly film turned into HD?

You have seen Firefly from DVD, how does
the quality compare to the HD version?

Have you seen Firefly on the Sci-Fi channel?
If so, how does it compare to the HD version.
I think the Sci-Fi version is very old film.
The DVD seems clearer. I am hoping they used
a good film to make the HD version or at least
cleaned it up like on the Firefly DVD.

Do you know if that channel is available through Dish Network? If so, I could record it at work and play it during my shifts, which could potentially introduce a whole new group of people to the show (plus it would be a really good thing for me).

I've now watched three episodes and I have to say, the HD version is much clearer than the DVD. In my home theater both video sources (Component vid for DVD and HDMI for HDTV) produce about the same size image (approx 100" across). At that scale you can really pick out the differences. In fact, after watching one episode in HD (Bushwacked), just for fun I popped the DVD in and played a few minutes of it. It looked "fuzzy" having been watched so close to the HD version.

One fer-instance... in the opening credits, where they show an extreme letterbox layout of the images, a very subtle but crisp leather pattern is visible above and below the narrow letterbox video. It is fuzzy in the DVD version. Also, because they do play commercials in the HD version the "fade to suede" is very obvious and not so much on the DVD.

All in all, I'm gonna keep my HD copies as long as I can until something better comes along (please not Blu-Ray please not Blu-ray...) With Universal paying for the HD conversion effort, maybe they've worked out a distribution deal with Fox to distribute the Firefly eps in HD-DVD, something I'm seriously considering.

I think the HD version is way better than the DVD. The box set DVD was grainy at times, the HD version is so much better. I certainly hope Universal continues to show these.
