So I was thinking, how is it that our BDH Mal got himself that fine sidearm. It's always listed as a "standard-issue officer's pistol". Mal was not an officer, he was a Sergeant. There is a big difference. In the US Military (I know it's not the same, but bear with me) officers, that's LT and above, are issued pistols as opposed to rifles. So, as Mal was a Sergeant and likely was issued a rifle, where-o-where did he get that pistol?

My guess is during or after the battle of Serenity Valley when most of the officers had been killed, captured, or wounded and he was in charge, Mal relinquished a pistol from somebody who didn't "need it" anymore.

Everybody always has the advantage over us, but that's what makes us special...and Browncoats.

It would have been far easier to sneak a pistol from the field than a larger weapon.

(It would also make more sense for Mal to be carrying a pistol around than a thumbing great rifle. Guns make people nervous so one that is unobtrusive is better for his purposes.)
