I believe, my fellow Browncoats, that I have a terrible affliction: Firefly Depression. The cause of my deadly illness is the lack of production I see in any "official" (to use the word lightly) medium. It has been over a year since Serenity came out, and while things have been good in terms of secondary merchandise (the Visual Companions, Serenity RPG, that sort of thing), little has been done on things like TV shows, movies, and the like. I am sorry to say that I'm a late convert: it was August 2006 when I joined these esteemed ranks. I know that Joss hasn't sad there WON'T be a new movie/show, but, granted, he's busy with Wonderwoman, and the other actors are busy doing more actin' in other parts of Hollywood. I know that "Star Trek" waited a whole decade, but in ten years, I'm worried that Firefly won't have the same feel to it, that special feeling that's not quite describable. The best I can think of for late-era projects is a spinoff show set in the same 'Verse, perhaps with a different ship and a different crew.

However, the one thing that keeps me going is the knowledge that NOBODY makes a movie about a cancelled TV show...nobody except Universal, apparently, and with the increase in that side-line merchanidse I mentioned comes the beliefe that, just maybe, some gears are turnin' in the executive heads at Universal, or SciFi, or any other station that could support Season 2 or Serenity 2.

So, my request is this: anyone having any similar thoughts, or would like to contradict my own negative musings (please???)?

Welcome to the pain that is Firefly fandom.

Count yourself lucky. You didn't have to go through the years of waiting between the series cancellation and the release of Serenity.

My advice to you is to immerse yourself in good works: spread the love to others around you who haven't discovered this obsession yet. At the very least it will give you some people to share the pain with, and at best the continuing growth of this fandom will convince Universal to bring us more of the 'verse.

Oh, and before I forget: welcome! You've found a great site with lots of fellow Browncoats who truly understand what you're going through.

Thank you for your response. While I do count myself lucky, I still have that feeling as if I've found something I really enjoy, and it might not ever go anywhere again. But you're right, at least I have a whole community of people who are going through the same thing. Thanks for your time and your kind reply.

CANTER

Hi there,

I've been a Firefly fanatic since I first saw the show here in 2003. So I know your pain.

I actually thought that if all the Browncoats in the world (and trust me....firefly fever goes beyond the US of A), write a letter (in an envelope with a stamp) to Universal with an undertaking to buy a ticket to "Serenity 2 - the Big Damn Sequel", and/or an undertaking to purchase the DVD, we might again get momentum going. Even if they don't take us literally, at least they won't be allowed to forget us.

Wanna?

(ps: I understand that Serenity cost about $20 million to make. And it has now only just broken even. I don't know how much a movie ticket cost in the US. How many people needed to see it to make $20 mil? Over here in South Africa a ticket cost about R35-00. Current exchange rate is about R7-50 to a dollar, which means it equals approximately $4-60. Some days it cost about R14-00, which I think equals approx $2.

..firefly depression; a much better term than my own, emptyachinglonginggapingemptyohmygodhowcoulditbeover affliction. I also JUST found Firefly in August of THIS gorram year. (But in enough time to get my butt to Dragon*Con, in Atlanta, GA. and see lots of browncoats. Just joined the site a few weeks ago my ownself and, while it helps some, my disease will only find itself in remission with a televised return to the 'verse.

Same here.... saw the movie on DVD, still did not know there was a defunct related series until the last 2 weeks. Own the DVD set now and have watched all episodes at least 3 times. The thing that sticks in my craw? Where was the promotion? I cannot remember seeing a single trailer for the movie nor a single teaser for the series back in 02. The "Browncoats" have kept it alive. I saw someone post and say that they could not believe they were actually a member of this community. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I understand the statement. Personally I just associate this type of thing with a younger generation. I will soon be 52 years old and have never been a member in this type of setting before... but dern it, when I watch TV now nothing comes close. I am ruined and want to see more. Not even BSG, though the best thing on SCI-FI now IMHO, is in the same class. Firefly had an undefinable quality that has seldom been seen. Make it so Fox, Sci-Fi, Joss, et al.

I will be in my bunk.

I understand you my fellow browncoats (I am 50 myself) so this show has appeal for many ages.

It is frustrating but we can not give in to anything but VICTORY. I've been a member here since Feb. of this year (06) and only 2 weeks ago made what I believe is my first real browncoat recruits. My sister and niece. Now they still aren't at the level that I am (but it may happen later)but I can say that if a new series or sequel began next week they would be there right with me to welcome it home. I'm sure there would be others with them also. I have just joined the Si/fi channel membership and wrote them a nice little letter about this great show. So lets hold the line till we are shoulder to shoulder in the trenches.

All I can tell you Jmbrock is that there was a lot of time that passed between the show and the BDM. With luck there will be less time between the BDM and whatever comes next. So I'll leave you with three things: 1. The fact thet the BDM was made has gotten many Browcoats mobilised again which has brought attention to our cause. The BigDamnThankYou site is a good example. 2. Browncoats will never give up or stop trying to do whatever they can to get the next project made. 3. Be patient, these things take time and while they do you have a place to come for support.

so be depressed.. you are among friends and fellow Browncoats who totally get what you are feeling..

and when you can't crawl, you find one of us to carry you til you can stand again.

If you look around in that dark tunnel of despondancy you'll see the signs of many passages. We've all been there. Some, like myself, went there when they first cancelled the show. Others pop in when they get to the last disc in the series. No matter, we all end up there. Just remember, as long as there are Browncoats, Serenity will be flyin. It ain't much, but it's enough.
