HISGOODGIRL

Just a gal out on the rim writing tales.

Bigbadman and I are attending Flan and have a question for those who attended last year or are going this time around: do folks wear costumes or is everyone in street clothes? We just don't wanna show up looking like idiots. So clue us in on the fashion protocal, please.

Xiè xie!

PS Anyone know whether you can carry a non-working replica pistol on a plane in your check-on luggage without the security guys keel-hauling you?

I was told by a few friends that attended last year that this wasn't a 'costume' type convention.

I've seen others say they plan to.

All depends on how you want to be perceived by all the actors that are attending, I suppose.

I'd rather be seen like a semi-normal person, so I won't be wearing a costume around them.

A pistol in checked luggage. . . I would tell them at the check in desk or call the airline so you don't get there and have it taken away before you can get on the plane.

hisgoodgirl: Hello! I don't know if this helps, but I attended Dragon*Con in Atlanta this year and actually asked some of the folk in costume how they got some very scary looking weapons (of all kinds!) onto plans..most said they "fed-ex-ed" to the hotel they were stay at and there was no problem at all. BTW I did not wear a costume but next year I will at least take one in case I want to take part in some of the costume events... like the parades, contests, and - at least one or two night-time parties.
I envy you attending your event; maybe you'll think about Dragon*Con next year!

Flan-I had very few costumes. A few folks did a sort of "tribute wardrobe" thing. One guy spent the weekend wearing a replica browncoat. I wore tan pants, brown/orange shirt, and suspenders part of the time. (Nathan noticed and commented on it during the autograph session, which was fun.)

There were some "best dressed" door prizes for a couple of events, but these did not depend on any similarity to the costumes on the show. One young lady of my acquaintence won for a stunning traditional kimono.

Your fellow browncoats wore everything from T-shirt and jeans to formal attire at every event. I'd say the best rule of thumb is to bring clothes you feel are comfortable and flattering (if you care about the latter).

yeah,, what they said! Few costumes last year.. who knows if there will be more for this, the last Flan..

even at the dinner and cocktail.. it ranged from CA Casual to dressed up.. there really is no dress code.. be comfy is my recommendation.

oh and for photos.. pick out the outfit that will photograph well and that you will enjoy looking at for a L O N G time.. not too many lines and squiggles.. I think white is bad etc.

Well, this thread is also helpful.

But it raises another question: Why is this "the last Flan"?
And what future arenas will there be (if any) for Browncoats to gather with our BDH's?

Respectfully,

It's the last Flan because the organizer, Booster Events, has announced they're not going to do any more Firefly-only conventions after this one.

I have not seen a coherent explanation for this, so we can only speculate.

They have stated that they will include FF/S guests at other conventions. Just no more Firefly-specific ones.

As to other possible meetups, there are many cons that include one or more of the BDHs among their guests. The thing that's great about the Flans is that for those of us who aren't particularly interested in other franchises, the Flans are "total immersion" and therefore a great bargain.

Humpf.
I imagine the issue is profitability.
I've put together medical conventions (both national and state) in my specialty--but never for profit.
Never found it much of a challenge, not even in attracting big name speakers from across the country--if the environment was a good one.
Is there is a certain attendee mass necessary to attract "special guests" like our BDHs?

Or perhaps there are other factors [I recall that on the "Done the Impossible" DVD, Adam and Alan contacted the late and missed Lux (who did the Firefly South Park caricatures) when they happened to be nearby on location].
Or perhaps our BDH's are "moving on"?
>sigh<

Guess their level of interest on getting together again with fans is a question we should ask at the Flan Q&A.

Respectfully,

I would guess that as we get farther away (sob) from Firefly/Serenity being an "active" franchise the BDH's will be busier doing other things.
