If Firefly had gotten...say...oh...an eight-season run, what changes do you think we might've seen in our Big Damn Heros? What do you see they'd be like by the time a decade had passed?

Personally? I see Simon getting tougher. Not so afraid to fight back when he's attacked. Clean as ever, proper as ever, but he's learned his way arround the rim a bit and can actully talk to folk without shoving his foot down his throat.

Maybe River would get to be a bigger part of the crew. Going on jobs a bit more often, give them a good advantage in a lot of cases...but sometimes, her forsight gets them into worse scrapes then it gets them out of.

Don't really wanna go through my thoughts on the whole crew right now...just wondered what your thoughts on the subject were...

One day.
One mission.
One army of Browncoats.
On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

REGINAROADIE

Well, given that Joss's casts for his two other shows have been revolving doors of people coming and going, there's the possibility that if it did last five to seven years, prbably half or three quarters of the cast would be gone or replaced, with probably Mal, Jayne and River being the only three remaining.

And as much as we'd like to see Simon and Kaylee together, he'd probably have them together for fifteen minutes before he kills off one of them, like he did with Wes and Fred in ANGEL. I agree with Simon getting tougher, which we already saw in the BDM.

As for Mal, I agree with one the of contributors to the "Finding Serenity" essay book, which said that Mal might have re-gained his faith, which was the point of Shepheard Book (to be someone to challenge Mal's atheism).

"We have five million Cybermen. How many are you?"
"Four"
You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?"
"We would destroy the Cybermen with ONE Dalek. You are superior in only one respect."
"What is that?"
"You are better at dying."

Trash talk between a Cyberman and a Dalek. It doesn't get any better than that.

PURPLEBELLY

I believe that Whedon had learned his lesson with eponymous human characters, and would have used the freedom he had bought by going with the ship to jetison all the original cast by season three at the latest. This form of wage-discipline for actors would mean he could spend more on writers - hurrah!

Of course, the main benefit of an extended TV run is that we would have been spared the Movie

CALIFORNIAKAYLEE

Honestly, I think River would have died by season 5 at the latest. Inara would have left, but returned eventually in some not-on-the-crew but rather I'm-here-to-make-your-life-more-difficult-and-no-I-don't-like-it-but-I-won't-let-you-see-that sort of role. I don't think Book would have left, at least not for another several seasons. I think Jayne would have gotten a sweetie eventually, either a steady girl in some port, or maybe a crew member (maybe even River? maybe I need to not read so many Rayne fics). I think Simon and Kaylee would have gotten together, but their relationship would have been rocky, with plenty of falling-outs and getting-back-togethers. I don't think Wash and Zoe would have had a baby, but I think their relationship would have gone through some sort of story arc.

And Mal? Well, you just never know with Mal. ;)

AGENTROUKA

Oh, I love speculating! *g*

River - after the general movie-related development slow-timed for the series, we would have seen a greater contrast between the skills she has been conditioned to have and her personality, which is actually very focused on harmony. A more coherent sort of reaction to the violations she had to endure. Anger, restlessness, a sense of looking for her place in the world. She might have started doing some irrational things, like any teen growing up, and become a danger to the crew again not as a passive object but due to her own choices. An arc of responsibility, if you will.

Simon - a slow progress toward the harder and more bitter but also more competent once he internalizes all those patterns of behavior on the rim. Of all of them, he's the one most likely to feel inspired to join some kind of rebellous movement should the opportunity arise. An arc asking how far he's willing to go for the sake of disappointed idealism.

Kaylee - would have taken "heart of the crew" and run with it, going from child to mother, in a way. Growing more of a spine and using all that energy behind her spirited cheer to try and hold together this family on Serenity. Harder, stronger, fiercely protective and frighteningly resourceful. Hung up on Simon, in a way, but probably hooking up with a more attainable (new?) character, who would match her in terms of team work. They'd be the ones without whom, everything would fall apart.

Jayne - a gradual shift from mercenary to moral compass. He's already the voice of truth, and his friendship with Book indicated an interesting willingness to engage in moral thought. I could actually see him becoming a Shepherd. Going from destructive to constructive, without losing his special Jayne kind of way.

Book - pretty much the Miranda arc and death. Repent for whatever his sins are by healing Mal's broken sense of faith, then dying.

Inara - highly dependent of whether they would have used that Reaver plotline. Either way, she would have brought the focus on the Core worlds, and introduced a flock of new characters and political plotlines by returning there, possibly providing a later tie to Simon's plot, with her job acting as a key to access and connect lots of different spheres. Character-wise, it would have been one long struggle between private wants and political/professional duties, balancing that with her committment phobia. Arc of choice.

Mal - after the darker turn in the Miranda plotline, he would probably becomes somewhat torn between his newly awakened sense of faith and his chosen lifestyle, which is the basis of his new family. He'd probably get sucked into a new rebellion somewhat against his will by the way of Simon and spend most of his time dreading another destruction of everything he loves. His relationship with Inara, rocky and passionate, would probably be a standard indicator of his mental state. Arc of making choices, as well.

Wash and Zoe - doomed. The baby issue would divide them for a time, and whether or not a baby comes about, Wash ends up dying in the Miranda plotline and Zoe, through the maze of plotlines the others have going, works toward a sense of independence from Mal, building her own life, be that rebelling with Simon (being the experienced leader for once) or pulling strings in the background raising a child on a planet somewhere. Arc of independence.

Hmm.
