Hey Browncoats! I'm Peter, and for all those who are interested, I got a shiny idea about a million years ago: take an old pinball machine and convert it into a Serenity game. Once that's done, I'll auction it off for charity in the name of Serenity 2!
My older thread, www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15599, is kind of cluttered right now, and some might not see the progress I've made so far, which includes this, the machine in question:

And this, a new backglass poster:

Anyway, I've recently found this company based in St. Paul who make custom pinballs, for real. All I do is give them the design, they print it up, and I apply it.
More updates as they happen.

No, I am not insane, I am crazy. Thank you for asking.

So this is where you dissapeared to. I was wondering about the project. Are you still going to be putting the model of Serenity where that plane is? (is was a plane right?) and the Serenity logo in that circle? I'm buzzing now. It's going to be beautiful and your awesome to auction it off after all the work you put into it.

Course you'll have a few games first though right?

If I'm a bitch, then life just got interesting

Nice to run into you again too, Misstressahara. I've recently rigged the motor on the top right to spin the whole helecopter instead of the just the rotors. I'll be using old Star Wars model parts to turn it into the Reaver skiff that chased the Mule after Mal robes the bank.

Every time you hit the spinner, it'll send that skiff a-spinning. My dad got a huge laught out of it when he first saw it.

Oh, pressure on the brain. I'm looking for the name of the font used in this picture:

Anyone who has the Serenity RPG, the Visual Guide, or the cards will recognise that image of the Alliance Planets. I'm planning to cover the thumper bumpers with the four planets visited in the film. But I must label them, and that's the font I want, no, NEED to have.
I need intel! Please help!

Wow, pinballwizard, very cool project!

A fan, RickMacMerc, did a post on some of the different fonts used in Firefly here: http://blogs.macmerc.com/rick/?p=232 (via Whedonesque). That's a good place to start. Even if he doesn't touch on that particular graphic he sounds very knowledgable and might be able to point you in the right direction or suggest a similar replacement.

Best of luck.

I can tell you guys that I'm looking forward to going back to college, and it'll also help me to finish my graphics. There's a print shop in town that does huge printouts in the size I need for the cabinate art and playfield. I've made some improvements to that as well, made it look more dynamic, with graphics that are reminicent of chinese advertising. I'll post a picture asap but first, another request.
Out there in that wonderful, glorious imaginary land of the Internet MUST be an image of the Serenity logo with the letters lit from behind by a soft orange glow. Actually, there is:

But I need a hi-res version, A HI-RES BEAUTY QUEEN!!! Once it's mine, the new backglass will be complete, and I can print it out and put it on the machine. I like to think that's sweet.

truly wonderful idea - & especially how nicelky its been coming along.

I liked all the suggestions for things the sound generator might say so here's something that might serve as an inspiration:

In the arcade down on the Santa Monia pier is a "South Park" pinball machine & it is one of the most entetrtaining things I've ever seen. The machine senses when you're there and insults you using Cartman's voice. If you don't put in a quarter, Cartman will first insist that you do so. Then, if you still don't pay, he'll provide increasingly convoluted insults until finally, if you still haven't paid, he'll shine you on something to the effect of, "Go on - move along - you're poorer than Kenny so we don't need your quarter in the first place." And finally, if you're still hanging around, he'll tell you to "Get lost, loser!"

Ya gotta love a machine that insults you just for being there. Maybe something like Joss's voice saying, "People love a happy ending, but I just have to remind you that I don't like people." ...or something like that...

Is there any chance that you - PBW, I mean - can get your game mass produced?

Well I sure hope none of you think I'm done. No sir! Next comes the hardware modifications, new designs for the playfield and sides, sound effects, then I gotta replace the plunger with Mal's gun, like on the Indiana Jones machine. Lotta work before this is done.
But I have made progress on another front, as the new playfield decal is almost done. I just need some specifics attended to, then comes the tedious challenge of removing the lights and targets and whathaveyou from the playfield, laying the big sticker down, coating it with urithane, and putting everything back and hoping it still works:

Boy, do I wish. Even if I wasn't just a college student majoring in art-type-stuff, I wouldn't know how to go about selling it. There isn't much of a market for pinball machines, or arcade machines in general. The concept of the arcade as you and I know it is in the winter of it's life, kept only alive by those toturous DDR machines (and it's many look-alikes). People don't have to go to a seperate building to play awesome games anymore; some see that as positive, other as negative, but it's a fact.
The reason I chose such a base to make my game around is related to that fact though: usually something that get's turned into an arcade game is a confirmed part of popular culture, even if it's a cult-hit.

Well, I suppose if I was a compete nutter, I could make more than one, but I've still got a grain of salt about finishing the first one. It's nice to dream though, that's what got me started on this project, and what I do until noon every weekend.

I have no idea why I've been doing so much work on the designs recently. Probably to avoid homework Finished something I'd been stressing over for a while, which is the artwork that goes on the side of the machine:

Gorgeous work, pbw!
If you're looking for an image of an armed
Book, you're probably looking at trying to
find a good cap from War Stories.

Sample ideas here, except I don't see a good
full-lengther and I'm sure there were some
frames in the episode:
http://still-flying.net/images/warstories/index.php?page=7

But there are other cap sources, and even 'coats
right here who can cap (is anybody listening?).

Yes, indeedy, "caps" are captures.
We used to call them "frames" to
separate them from "stills," which
were often posed rather than
snipped from the film.

As I drifted off to inner space last
night it occurred to me that Book
might appropriately be unarmed, if
you could find a pic that works but
is gun-free. Could be a subtle reference
to his most recent calling?

Oy. For someone who likes to be busy a lot, getting sick from mono is a real downer. Couldn't pick up a pencil without needing a three hour nap. On the upside, I did finish that gift for my brother, the world's only homestarrunner.com Trivial Pursuit game:

Now HE just has to make the cards.

As of now, work has resumed on the machine. I've ordered replacement parts for that beast, looked into modifications to it's layout, and am taking final measurements for the vinal artwork to cover it. The only thing I'm really worried about is who my roomate will be this semester. Will he be a , or a , or a , or even a ? Only time will tell.

That's awesome! I've always liked frogs for some reason. It is a bit of a head scratcher as to why that guy had his room filled to the brim with them, though.
As it turnes out, I haven't been assigned a new roomate, so now I have a single/double! Flippin sweet bachelor pad, however that's spelled.
My former roomate was both a flan and a supporter for my project. It was me that got him hooked, and now we work out a media fix satisfying system: I provide his Firefly fix and he provides my Halo fix. Works pretty good.
Now that the designs are done, it's time to focus on the hardware & software work of the machine. I've found a teacher who might be able to helpp me hotwire something that will replace the broken sound fx board. Also, time to start up the Keene Browncoats. Wish me luck, and fewer hangovers on Sunday mornings.
