Book would not have to be Evil in order to be a commanding officer at Serenity Valley(my pet theory for the evidence check out thread "was book at sernity valley?")

Even though he felt the war was "Necessary and a moral imperative", plenty of times in his published journals Ulysses S. Grant expresses soul gripping remorse , and at times a complete loss of his faith in God, upon having ordered young men, mostly children, into the carrion fields of 19th century war.

Such a man, were he to not be pressed into the Presidency, would probably waste the rest of his life in a bar if he did not join a monestary or commit suicide.

He clearly knows all about EVERYONE on board, and how to push their buttons. He made damn sure (like with Mal), that Book wasn't going to have much of a chance to fight back.

Now I believe that he is a man of faith, maybe even a shepherd (at least officially) and possibly "doing penance" for something, but as others have pointed out, he's quite up-to-date on what's happening in the contemporary world, and his skills are certainly not rusty! I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him still being in active service (although definitely with a long history), such as undercover, but at the same time he could be in need of a low profile for some reason, and I'm largely convinced that he's not "tracking" River, or any of the Serenity crew.

I agree that everybody seems to be thinking too literally.

Now, I'm not saying that Book was anywhere as despicable as my example, but it serves my puroses best to push the plausibity envelope in drawing a parralell.

In today's world(EARTH THAT WAS), if a child-mollester truly regrets their crimes and dedicates their life to serving the homeless and laying down in front of logging trucks in Brazil, all anybody cares about when the truth comes out is the fact that this is one sick M***er-F***er. This person would clearly be defined by their past actions.

It wouldn't matter how tough Simon ever tried to be, he would still be a doctor and spoiled core-brat.

Zoe could become a social worker but she would always be seen by anyone with a modicum of perspicacity(look it up)as a soldier.

Once an alchoholic always an alchoholic.

The world is full of people who want to be one thing, but no matter what, they ultimatly are who they are.

IMHO:

I believe that Book was a higher up in the Alliance and in fact he was at Serenity Valley and after seeing all the blood-shed decided to turn to God, Why?

Well, because based on what we know of Joss, wouldn't it be perfect story symmetry that at the point in which Mal lost his Faith, was the time at which Book "gained" his?

"Whoa, good Bible."

The thread "Was Book At Serenity Valley" has all the evidence and reasoning supporting the theory that Book was Alliance command corps.
