Howdy folks,

I was watching "Trash" for like the fourth or fifth time yesterday, and began reflecting on the comment Inara made to YoSaffBridge that the authorities were on their way to pick her up.

Now, as far as Mal and the Gang knew, up until this point, they had managed to keep their profile fuzzy and vague on the Alliance radar, but turning the Great Space Strumpet over to the authorities would very likely change that fact very quickly. I find it quite probable that Our Mrs. Reynolds would roll over on Our Mr. Reynolds at the drop of a hat and she'd even do it for free (though I'm sure she'd try to get some money out of it.)

So now, instead of the government looking for a non-specific, random, Firefly class mid-bulk freighter they'll be looking for a Firefly class mid-bulk freighter captained by Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds from Shadow with his crew of eight miscreants.

That is, of course, assuming that Inara told her the truth.

I had the same question about the exchange between Inara and the GSS. She didn't really specify which authorities and I thought perhaps it was some local sheriff. It was set up in "The Train Job" that they don't always work well with Alliance. I was also thinking that she may not have that much on them. Anything to do with the Lassiter (sp?) would implicate him and they took great pains to keep Simon and River away from her so she didn't really know that they were harboring fugitives. What do you think?

Well, the cops called to the Haymer estat on Bellerophon were Federal Cops, so it's unclear whether there are also some local yokels or just the Feds stationed there.

It's true that the Alliance doesn't know that Mal is harboring fugitives (unless Jubel Early had tipped them off. . . which I doubt), but they are certainly looking for him to recover the Lassiter. Any sort of Alliance attention is really unwanted by all members of the crew.

An interesting note, the Lassiter was dubbed "the Mexican" in the original draft of the script. I'm glad they changed it.

What I meant was that I'm not sure what she would tell the feds about Serenity. She can't say anything about the Lassiter really and she doesn't know anything about Simon and River. Though your probably right that there weren't any local forces there. I definitely agree with SLK about Saffron's revenge.

Buuuutt. Seriously who is going to listen? Her hubby is a big shot, and he appears to simply just want her home. Perhaps he would consider YoSafBrig's return as fair trade for the Lassiter. Considering that Mal quite possibly saved his life from the bouncing bride (as in bouncing a gunbutt off his noggin), he may not want Mal tracked down.

He is high up enough socially that their bride get returned to him, rather than directly to jail. Depends on how he feels about Mal, or the Lassiter relative to his wife, its really in his court as to whether the law goes after Mal over the gun.

Well, I don't know if Haymer still is in love with his "blushing bride," but he might appreciate Mal bringing her around so he could get even with her. The guy does have a lot of artifacts, and he could probably re-acquire the Lassiter on the black market. However, YoSaBri is probably aware that Mal often operates outside the law, and I think she'd really like to see him brought down (especially after he played her like he did.) So maybe she'd cut a deal with the Feds to help track Mal down in exchange for a lighter sentence (and a chance to escape.)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I agree w/ SLK that YoSafBridg strikes me more as the type to want to get even then to simply turn Mal in to the authorities. Besides, Mal has a little dirt on her as well. I doubt that YoSafBridg would chance sitting in an Alliance prison somewhere for even a reduced sentence just to get back at Mal. I think she may kind of respect Mal for pulling one over on her, especially since she prides herself on being so cunning.

I think she may show up in the movie, at least for a small part.

I'm sure she has a really long rap sheet and she is implicated in many deaths so I think she would do everything to steer clear of the law. She would probably end up with a pretty lengthy sentence.

But I'm interested that people seem to think that Haymer wanted her back. I mean, I know he did but he didn't really expect her to stay. Wasn't he the one who called the feds in the first place? Now I'm wondering if I misunderstood and I've loaned my DVD out for recruiting purposes so I'm very curious on this point! Do folks think that he would ask the feds just to bring her back to him? Was that implicit and I didn't catch it??

And I think she'll show up again. At least if it makes it back to television. I felt like she was designed to be a recurring thorn in their side.

This all assumes that Haymer files charges. No charges, no crime, and the Fed aren't gonna investigate a case where a high ranking, at least former offical of the government does not want them to.

If he just wants his wife back, then she ain't got nothing to tell anybody.
