The new VOTING Thread! by TPage

Good job TPage, I was literally making a new one when I saw this.

If you don't know already, you can vote once an hour. We are currently in fifth place behind Farscape, Le Lame Nikita, Bonanza, and Xena: Warrior Princess, but just a month or so ago we were in eighth place. WE ARE ADVANCING AND PULLING IN THE MOST VOTES PER DAY!

Just yesterday we pulled in over 800 votes for the first time and frankly I don't see why we, the most devoted fan base in all of fandom can't pull in over 1000 a day. Plus, some tips for getting in extra votes include:
1) if you have a wireless card and live in the city or an apartment complex, or maybe even suburbia, try picking up someone else's signal and voting from there (I'm able to get in two an hour instead of just one)
2)Vote from home/vote from work/vote from cell phone
3)get friends to vote/vote on friends computers
4)spread the word to other firefly boards

And if you need the extra encouragement to go vote, someone over on the Bonaza boards was gloating about how they "stepped on Firefly." I ain't gonna let that one slide.

I agree with your advice. And spread the word to other boards. And to fans not on the internet. phone, cajole, e-mail.

We're slowly getting in more and more votes. In October we were averaging about 550 a day. We're now regularly getting in the high 700s. That must surely be attributed to more awareness.

In the last 35 (I don't always get Saturdays) days they've pulled in more votes than us only 4 times.

Everyone out there go back inside; or I will blow a new crater into this little moon.

Perhaps my data has somehow been corrupted...
Does anyone else have a track of Bonanza's & our numbers?

When I think back to when I started voted (early October or so) and how we weren't even close to being in the top 5 (I believe we were in about 7th or 8th place) and I look how we are over 10,000 votes ahead of the next closest competitor now I ... I am simply astounded!

In such little time Firefly has shot ahead and we've shown no signs of slowing, only speeding up!

This time we're not the losing side!

Flattop, you seem to be the one crunching the numbers, is there a way to calculate our rate of acceleration in votes per day and then see how long until we take first? It seems like it won't be long before we hit 900 a day and then 1000 a day. At the rate, could we be in first by early next year?

Shiney A new number crunch! I'm sitting at home now, and the trendsheet is (of course) at work, so I won't be able to play with it until tomorrow...
Short answer: Yes.
Longer answer: As the projections are extended further into the future, and are required to cover a greater span of votes, they become decreasingly stable given the small sample period currently trended.
Painfully long answer:
There are a bunch of variables that I cannot currently account for, like:
Thanksgiving break next week. Will we get more votes because students are not in class & can vote regularly? Or do we get fewer votes because corporate types such as myself no longer have access to multiple machines?
That goes for pretty much all of the holidays. Christmas, New Years, Summer break, Euro-holidays... Perhaps there is some seasonality trend as well (is Serenifly more poplular during the winter when folks are indoors more or...?)
Do the Princess' and Bonanzai experience the same trends? Or do they have a different demographic that is more/less stable?

OK, there're my disclaimers.

I'm more than happy to do the projections, but they are just computer aided guestimations 'k? I'll update them semi-regular as more data comes available (time passes and variables get accounted for).

Not likely. Even if they quit voting. By early next year we should be in the number 3 slot, and closing. Current projections show Bonanza passing Xena before we catch them, but that's a long range projection based on a linear model (seemed reasonable at the time), with the new projection... we'll see.

I thought your answer would be something like that, but still, that guesstimation would be cool to see.
Its comforting to know that a lot of those variables could work in our favor though. As a student I know the upcoming holidays will mean more votes out of me, plus we have Dec 1st to look forward to!

Up and forth vote over in the UK

loving the new thread, I was going to make one but couldn't find the other thread!

I have a very basic spreadsheet that calculates days to overtake and increase on votes (only from my first vote mid-late october) I have our Average rising from 650ish to 700ish a day (I don't have full figures broken each day hence the confusion) that puts us third by new year but will give us a very hard couple of years to gain on Xena and Bonanza. If we can hit 1000 a day (not sure it is possible but spread the word) we can be first by June (assuming the Bonanza boys don't step up their campaign)

Surely though we have the greatest chance as all the Bonanza fans will be moving into retirement homes soon!!

and it shows us overtaking Farscape (21) Nikita (31) Bonanza (310) and Xena within 377 Days or 1 year and nine days, it seems like a lot but not when you consider if I input the figures from November the 1st we get a final date to overtake Xena on 8/10/2009 that's the difference two weeks makes so we will get there aslong as we don't let up.

About the new guestimations...
Projections based on growth of votes per day show that Xena will win.

They started out with a very low number of votes per day, and jumped up to be almost competitve with us. This means they have more growth than we do, therefore Xena will win.
Same for Bonanza. The Bonanzai take second.

Now that I have your attention...
Those projections do not account for there being an upper limit to the number of votes per day, or fan fatigue (Bonanza and Xena appear to have peaked and fallen off from their daily high's, but is that a trend or just a plateau before they jump to 1,200?).

Projections based on a rolling 1 week average are much more promising, but potentially no more accurate. Of course being a Browncoat, and having a stubborn streak, I choose to believe the projections that show us in first place. Eventually.

Could just be different methods generating different results. I hope yours are right; it'd be much nicer to be in first place in ~ 1 year rather than 2.

unfortunatly I would go with yours which use a measured average, mine are worked out simply on if we do that exact day another X times - obviously not going to happen, with todays figures I have Farscape (21) Nikita (34) Xena (463) and Bonanza (536) my data only goes to november 1st so it is very basic calculations.
