I just hope the DVD's are the ORIGINAL trilogy and not just the "Special Edition." The only good one of those was Empire Strikes Back. It would be cool if the discs had both versions of the film. I know that Lucasfilm could do it if they wanted to (and if they knew what's good for 'em).

Oh well, I can always just recod my VHS copies of the originals onto a DVD of my own when I get a recorder.

Maybe we'll get real damn lucky and they DVD will have the option of playing EITHER version. I know that if I could go the rest of my life without watching the Special Ed versions, I could die a content man. However, living the rest of my life without watching the original versions would leave me an empty husk of a person.

The only problems I have with the special editions are the Greedo shooting first scene, and changing the Ewok song in Return of the Jedi.

I actually liked that silly little song and was irritated that they changed the ending to have a fully orchestrated song (done by primitive little teddy bears?!?) and then showing the entire galaxy cheering. I liked that it was a "private" celebration for the team who finally kicked the Empire's butt!

Otherwise, cleaning up the special effects was welcome. The haloed outlines on the original versions were becoming distracting...

From an article I saw in the Star Wars Insider Lucasfilm said the DVDs will be the special edition only....sucks don't it?
Apparently they never plan on releasing the original ever again. Lucas wants to only show it as his finalized "special edition".

I hope they change their minds...

I totally agree with this. I know most folks found the Ewok song annoying, but I liked the small, personal feel of that celebration, too. I also thought it was a bit pretentious to change the ending to the entire galaxy celebrating. In my mind, it's a continuity error. There's no way the whole galaxy could have know that the 2nd Death Star was destroyed that quickly, when very few even knew it existed, and NO ONE knew that the Emperor was on it, except those that were also on it.

I prefer the originals...

I've thought the same thing. Almost wrote it, too, but wasn't sure I wanted to start a discussion about how the rest of the galaxy could have heard about the victory!

The International Movie Database ( www.us.imdb.com) recently posted this on their website:
"The versions included in the set will not be the ones that originally were screened in the 1970s and 80s, company officials acknowledged, but are ones resulting from reediting with new digital recording equipment."
Personally I feel it would be kinda selfish of Lucas to release only the Special Editions. He ruined two of my favorite scenes from Jedi (the Max Rebo Band and the Ewok Song), not to mention Greedo shootin first in Episode IV . I just hope Lucasfilm realizes that the originals are just as important (if ot more so) to some poeple out in the 'verse as the Special Edition.

Ack! How could I have forgotten the Max Rebo band travesty!

Lapti Nek was a great song!

Didn't like the new band either.

How disappointing!

Matt and Trey had the right idea in the South Park ep "Free Hat". Lucas is evil.

HORRID

my biggest problem with the special editions was the big sandpit monster thing in jedi. As a kid I always wondered what the thing look like under the sand, like if his mouth was that grotesque imagine what the rest of it must look like, and then they stuck a mini asteroid worm in it's throat and ruined it's look, I'm hoping for a special special edition where it turns out the worm thing was just somthing the sand pit monster was having some trouble swallowing

I liked the ewok song too, cos it was somthing you could sing along to and join in on the celebration

Of all 3 Special Edition films, Jedi was my least favorite. That says a lot since Jedi is my favorite of the original trilogy.
One of my largest complaints about the Special Edition was the replacement of the classic homegrown special FX. It was these groundbreaking effects and techniques that launched Lucas and Industrial Light and Magic (the FX company Lucas created for the express purpose of making SW for those who didn't know) into the super-stardom they now enjoy.
Even with all of Lucas' hi-tech digital compositing tools of the mid-90's he still managed to mess up. I know this is a small thing, but... in The Empire Strikes Back, right after Luke drops fromthe celing of the wampa's ice cave using his lightsaber the sound effect for the "de-energizing" of the saber can be heard in a frame where the lightsaber is very obviously still on.
Sorry if this rant went on a little too long. This is why my girlfriend rarely watches SW with me. I get a little emotional.

According to a story I read on DVDFile, the trilogy released on dvd will only be the "special editions". Lucas said that he respects his fans wishes but releasing the original original trilogy on dvd was impossible. The only versions of those movies that matter to him are the special editions. For myself, who is a huge fan of the original movies, I will never buy the special editions on dvd just as a matter of principle. I think Lucas has lost his marbles.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.
