I saw this book in a bookstore the other day and it looked kinda interesting, but I had never heard of it. So, I thought "who better to ask than my fellow Browncoats."

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Hatred and loathing.
This thing was written by a ruttin' kid who has obviously read every fantasy book in existance. He rehashed them and became a bestseller while wonderful and original books languish on the shelves. Please don't give this book/trilogy any time, thought, or money.

I agree w/PhoenixRose: every single fantasy/myth/etc. plagarized. Sad. Reads like a child wrote it; which he did. Not worth the $$.

Peulsar5 buy the book.Yes Eragon does borrow a lot of ideas from many fantasy, myth, orc books but does not make it a bad read its a okay but not great.

My brother bought the book about a year ago & he became obssessed with Eragon I didn't buy it I wouldn't read it but when I heard there was to be a Eragon movie I decide to find out what all the fuss was about,so now I've read both Eragon & Eldest(sequel) I'm excited about the movie especially since its changed the story quite a bit which isn't the greatest.

Buy the BOOK,then watch the MOVIE.The movie is coming out on DEC 15.

Orginalty is something which is rare in this day & age,Firefly & Serenity being some of the few.

Darkfly, I heartily disagree. It is not a good read by any stretch of the imagination. I could not even get halfway through this piece of garbage.
And plenty of bad books have been made into movies. It just means they've sold. You know what gets a book sales 99 times out of 100? Marketing. They marketed this thing to hell because the 'author' was so young, so it sold. Did it stay on the bestseller list? No, because it isn't actually very good.
I restate; don't waste your time. Every fantasy book out there is worth more than this one. Read them first.

I said it was a good read, which means in my book is like a 3 star film, not rubbish just entertaining enough to read while I had nothing to do one day,my brother was pestering me to read it for nearly a year.

Plus PHOENIXROSE this is an opinion post so not everybody likes or dislikes it.

Actually, not too bad. Not something I would pick up again, but it was entertaining. I am looking forward to the movie because of the cast...not sure how it will be, but if it is bad, it'll only be a few hours out of my life. Besides, the cinema has good popcorn.
If you have the time, and are into fantasy books, give it a shot. If you find you can't get through the first twenty or so pages, quit then.

It might be worth borrowing from your local library or a friend. The story is good (not great), and the world he creates is engaging enough. Granted, he isn't particularly creative, but that's okay. The writing style itself is quite bad and it can be somewhat annoying to read because it is preachy -- you can tell it was written by an adolescent.
I had hoped his writing style would improve for the second book, "Eldest". It did, somewhat, but the story was lacking -- it was mainly just a filler so that he could write a third novel for the trilogy.
In sum, while it would be wisest to borrow "Eragon", buying it for very cheap wouldn't be a horrible thing. Paying for the sequel, "Eldest", however, would be a mistake.

Never read the book and have no intention of seeing the movie.

ERAGON, to me, just seemed to be garden variety fantasy, created somewhat to cash in on the HARRY POTTER/LORD OF THE RINGS craze that's going on in pop fiction, both books and movies. I've heard of all these fantasy book being turned into potential franchises. And all of these I feel is just studios scrambling to have the next HARRY POTTER or LORD OF THE RINGS. There are only two of these, outside of POTTER, that I actually want to see. The NARNIA movies (since they have as big a legacy as the RINGS books), and the adaptation of Phillip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy (which are incredible books and can't wait to see what they do with them). Both of these seem to actually have something going for them.

ERAGON, on the other hand is "There's no POTTER movie out this Xmas, so let's bilk kids with a knockoff version".

I'm just waiting for good old fashion sci-fi to make it's comeback on the big screen. I'm kind of sick of magic and broadswords and mythic creatures and quests and shit like that. I want a good old fashion "contact with alien race" story. I'm more excited for THE FOUNTAIN, since it seems like a return to sci-fi. Stuff like that and WAR OF THE WORLDS seem more like the exception than the norm.

**************************************************
"We have five million Cybermen. How many are you?"
"Four"
You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?"
"We would destroy the Cybermen with ONE Dalek. You are superior in only one respect."
"What is that?"
"You are better at dying."

Trash talk between a Cyberman and a Dalek. It doesn't get any better than that.

World of the Worlds is utter crap par the original,& the Fountain I can't wait to see but its already been panned by critics at a film festival, critics who needs them(Wing Commander is so my 5th most favorite film). And Harry Potter the biggest box Office rubbish franchise, give me LOTR anyday,& please Hollywood start making Sci-movies again with real aliens & exploring other planets.

Actually I rather enjoyed Eragon, and the second book in the series as well. I'm an avid Fantasy reader, and while it wasn't near as good as, say, books by Robert Jordan, I thought it was well written and quite enjoyable.

I'm looking forward to his next book.

I'd recommend you getting the book from the library, that way you lose no money if for some reason you don't like it. But give it a shot!

Personally, I liked Eragon. It was a quick, fun read. As long as you're not looking for something meaningful and deep, I think it's worth your money. Or at least your time; I'm sure they have it at the library.

I would definitely recommend it and the sequel. It's not the best work in the world and its clearly in the fantasy genre but the cultures are well thought out and the over all world of the series is very detailed. The second book is longer simply because the story branches to encompass several subplots, which makes it even more interesting to read. I'm really looking forward to the movie and the third book. But if you're not sure that you'll like it, try and get it from the library. Hardcovers are expensive and I haen't seen it in paperback yet.

Mine is an evil sugar high laugh! Bwahahahaha!

Is ruttin' kid in any way related to J.K. Rowling ?

Eragon is primarily being marketed to elementary-school readers, as Harry Potter was originally. So adjust your expectations down. (My 9-year-old and her friends think it's a great book.)

Just the fact that it's aimed at young readers doesn't mean it has to suck, though. There are a number of excellent young-adult market fantasies out there: Inkheart, The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Garth Nix's Sabriel/Lirael/Abhorsen, and, of course, the Philip Pullman books. Frankly, I think "Dark Materials" is better than a lot of fantasy written for adults.
