Hello Everyone!! I tried to wish you all adieu last night, but the site crashed on me... LOL at the French stuff DTH & Tristan were up to last night - all I can remember is the ubiquitus "La plume de ma tante est dans le jardin..." really useful that one!! (& probably not spelled correctly) - I don't speak a 2nd language, but I usually pick up the gist of a conversation (if it's not spoken too quickly) in French or Italian!

Anyone else a fan of 'A Fish Called Wanda"? LOL at Kevin Kline speaking Italian to get Jamie Lee Curtis all hot and bothered!

It is one of the sins of our otherwise great country, Nico, that we don't get to see much of Eddie Izzard in our general popular culture! I was exposed to him in the UK and rarely see him here at all...

I was not really in a 'clique' at high scool, but I had a close knit group of friends with whom I spent just about every waking (& nearly every sleeping) hour! We were sort of the individuals who got along with everyone, but clicked with noone! I was heavily into drama, art, English and literature as well as history - and my friends were variously into acting, dancing, art and costume design... we were all fairly interested in the performing arts and my closest friend and I even went on our summer holidays together - I'd spend 2 weeks with her family at Rosebud on the Mornington Peninsula every Summer before heading to Wilson's Prom for two weeks with mine! I remember trying to understand D&D when we'd visit the mega-geeks who played that every lunchtime - see we got along with everyone, but I soon realised you needed to be obsessed to really understand it and I just was too preoccupied with Shakespeare and Duran Duran to have the impetus to get into those things! We were a very liberal school - and individual expresseion was fine as long as it didn't impinge on other peoples rights - I guess in some ways my school community did have a big impact on me - but not a clique per se...

I think my involvement in the broader theatre community had more to do with who I am today ... but therein lies another tale...

Oh - I am watching the original 'Ocean's 11' - it's hilarious and very nostalgic to me at the same time! My cousin and I watched it in England so many times!!

Magda, "A Fish Called Wanda" is one of my all time favorites. It still make me laugh when I watch it. One of the many things that we do have in common. I also have a feeling that if we had gone to high school together we would have been in the same close knit group.

I am great. I went to see "Happy Feet" last night. It was a fundraiser for my school. I loved the music. It's VERY cute. Of course I was thinking of OUR Penguin the entire time.

Hello my gorgeous Kaylee-clone

!! I watched 'A Fish Called Wanda' just last week!!

I love it ...and when I was in the UK I saw Tom Georgeson (plays 'George Tomlinson') in a play called Dealers Choice, along with Ray Winston and others - I met them in a pub a nights days later (after seeing Elaine Paige play Norma Desmond in 'Sunset Boulevard') and they were so lovely - I had a pint with them both and they chatted with me about the theatre scene in Australia and England and were really warm and wonderful men - Ray Winsotn is one of the hottest actors in the UK now... so that's my little claim to fame for the day! (you might have seen him play King Henry VIII in a recent BBC series...)

I haven't seen Happy Feet yet - it's soon to be released though - so I will see it and think of you!!

EDIT: Hey Nico! Thanks for the weather update!! I will have to get my air con fixed in my car won't I?

It looks like the freak cold snap has gone and we can embrace summer properly now!

WOW, how cool. That's another great reason for stopping at a pub. You never know who you might meet. My only claim to fame is an old college story. One of my friends was having stomach pains, and the campus doctor was not at all helpful. My friend looked dreadful. I drove him home several hours away, so that he could see his own doctor. Less than an hour after I had dropped him off, his doctor had him in the hospital because his appendix had ruptured. If I hadn't driven him home, he probably wouldn't have made it. He recovered of course, and he now plays in a band called Garbage. I like to end the story with the phrase. If it wasn't for me there would be no garbage in the world.

I did talk to him once after they were nominated for a Grammy, but that's been quite a few years ago.

I would have to say that pizza should be given breakfast food status. I mean think about it: many people eat it for breakfast anyways, especially if it's leftovers from the night before, and it also has pretty good nutritional value. It covers nearly all of the food groups, despite the fact that it has a lot of fat. But really, it would make a better one than stuff like pop-tarts and dounuts in my opinion...

Yo to all the impondering people. Not usually one for posting in the forums, but thought I'd give it a go today. This thread moves rather quickly so but I'll give my response to the points that I picked up on.

Cliques-In school I was one of the fortunate people who had the ability to roam between the different groups without difficulty. Most of the time I spent with the basketball team, we trained some lunchtimes and usually had fixture info or something to discuss, so we spent a lot of time just hanging about together. Through the basketball team, and some friends from primary school I had my connections to the "cool" kids. I was also in all the top classes and a high scorer when it cme to exams, so I knew the nerds too. Being a fan of heavy rock music meant I was also accepted by the goths, moshers and all those guys too. I pretty much had the ability to hang out with all the outcasts too without being labeled one of them, so i was lucky I guess.

Breakfast food-Fish supper. Or pie supper...any supper that involves gallons of grease and deep fried everything. I think if i went to school for another few years I'd be dead, i used to eat that every day for my second breakfast.

NAVY! Good to see you on the thread. Welcome (and it's about time gorramnit)!

Cliques: In high school, I was in the 'smart group' so we all tended to get along (and we had a variety of folks -- theater folks, student activities, band geeks, etc.)...at the same time even floating with that group of diverse folks, I would hang out by myself every so often....I just have always seemed to march to the beat of a truly offbeat drummer.

My imponderable for everyone: While talking to NVG and avery online, NVG mentioned he had PTSD, which had me wondering. A lot of us, it seems has been diagnosed with an emotional/mental issue (PTSD, depression, etc.). It also seems (to me) that a lot of us who haven't been diagnosed with one can relate really well to the symptoms of one of the various issues.

So...do we all like the show because we see a bit of our lives (the bits of us that are 'broken' inside) in the characters and can relate and cheer for them? Or is because seeing them cope gives us hope to survive our personal insanities?

Just some food for thought....and if anyone is interested, I'll write my thoughts on my question later.

I'm quite sure I'm "broken" and in more ways than one but oddly enough this has never really been my connection point with the show/movie. I guess if I gave it enough thought it could be, but it hasn't been to this point.

I guess my connection to the show is how I can relate to the characters - not that I lead a lifestyle in any way similar to any of them - and that's what got me so hooked on the show. Their interactions with each other, the story lines and the chemistry of the cast were bigger attractions than my own personal connection.

Thanks to Neko I've had to ponder upon her thoughts. I see alot of despair and disallusionment all the time. Not only in the folks around me but within myself. Though I can't show my love all the time, I try in other ways alot like Mal. And it seems I have had too many relationships with women in the fashion of Mal.

What really gets me is how no one really gets along all that well, but they seem to compliment each other. That is how people work in the real world. Nothing is ever at complete peace.

Yeah, I find peace in the show. I'll get up an hour early after having a bad day and watch an episode before work.

The broken pieces seemed to fit real well within the show. Especially with the individual characters. Mal with the distance, Book with the endless mystery, Simon and the care for River, Inara and the lack of will to complicate things, the insecurity of Wash, the constant search for a mate by Kaylee, the silent fortitude of Zoe, the wonderful man part we call Jayne,and of course River just being River. All these components seem to describe my being to a T. I just wish I'd found Firefly sooner.

sweet, my cousin (once removed) was best friends with shirley manson at school, and so far as i know is still in touch ^^

(slightly worries me that i consider someone who went to school with someone of my mums generation to be attractive...that feels a bit, well, wrong...)

and, as for issue's, i dunno, on a purely personal level, i can't say as i ever related to any of the BDH's, purely because they can't sleep

NavySeils, glad that you added a post. Sounds like you were able to relate to all kinds of people. You can give added insights to the thread.

LA, Happy Feet is such a great movie that I'm sure you 2 year old would like it, but there is one fairly scary part when a big seal with big nashing teeth tries to eat Mubbles the main character. You might be able to put your arm in front of his eyes when that part comes around. You certainly don't want him having nightmares.

Oddsbodskins, nice to be related in the 'Verse. Yes, it's much easier to say it that way.

MsG, I'd have to agree with those that mentioned adding pizza to the breakfast list. I love cold pizza in the morning.

Neko, Interesting question. I am a happy fun loving person, and that's what most people see. I have had a few fits of depression, but very few people know that about me. Is that why I watch the show? I haven't thought about that aspect before. I think NV did a great job of expressing how he feels about the show. It made sense to me. I wonder if there are others that agree.

I never did answer the question about what was my favorite female character. I feel I have a little of all of the characters, so it's hard to judge which is better. Most people see that I act like Kaylee on the outside. On the inside I feel more like Inara. I avoid complications, and her contacts with men are physical but they never get to see her heart and soul. When it comes to children, I am a Warrior Woman. I am a strong advocate for children, and I will fight for their rights. When I was younger, I would definitely go on a crazed River jag once a month.

So, I think I watch the show because I know all of those women so well. I can feel their insecurities, their joys, and their pains. I think that it is the overall feeling of hope that the show brings. As long as we can keep flying, we are OK.

Neko: I've always associated most closely with River, not just because she's way too cute to adequately describe, but because she, like me, is a bright young person bowed under the weight of mental disorder (of course, in River's case, replace bright with brilliant, and mental disorder with mind-rape).
A lot of the other characters, while I enjoyed them greatly, I didn't associate with them. Kaylee, for example. I could never be that optimistic, that warm and extroverted. I could never be the sophisticate that Inara is, or be anywhere near as endurant as Zoe. On the other hand, I can relate to the bluntness (some might even call it lewdness) of Jayne, definitely the smart-ass in Wash, and to a lesser extent, the kind, if rough, heart of the Captain.

If you look in this ensemble, you'll find yourself somewhere. Sometimes, you'll find yourself in little pieces, but you're in there somewhere.

I wouldn't really say that I realte directly to just one of the characters, but more of a mix between several. I like to think that I am a Kaylee+River+Wash+Book type of person.
But then I'm also not sure if that's what originally attracted me to the show. It was probably just the fact that the characters were realistic, the dialogue was great, and the premise for the show was interesting and original.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm a fan of Garbage too! You actually knew one of the band members??!!

Yep, I know Duke Erikson. He was in a band when we were in college. I have some old pics of that group stored away. I'll see if I can dig them up. Of course he did have hair back then.

Hey Kaylee-clone! & Little Albatross! I just knew we were all kindred spirits - and yes, I have seen Fierce Creatures, and although it did not get good reviews I love it too... again Kevin Kline is brilliant, and I adore Michael Palin! Do you know his series of 'Ripping Yarns'? They were very much a series of send-ups of British stories in different genres - British 'Murder-Mystery in the Manor House', British Explorers ('Across the Himalayas by Frog') & British Public School story ('Tomkinson's School Days')

!! I am very open about the fact that I suffer from depression - though I usually have it well under control, I do find moments when I have a connection with most of the characters - either through personal experience or hope/fantasy.. I like my KC, am a warrior woman when it comes to children - and will stand up for them wherever, whenever, and I identify wit the love and loyalty that Zoe/Wash have as well as the different kind of love/loyalty of Zoe/Mal... I see a centred strength in Inara that I wish I had, a self control I am not good at, but also a sensuality and connection with her sexuality that I sometimes relate to myself. Simon's intelligence is tempered by his inability to relate to people easily without the lubrication of alcohol... something I think maany people understand, and Mal, whilst deeply caring and loyal towards his 'family' is mostly unable to express this... Book holds himself strong by the scaffolding of his faith - somthing I do relate to - when I am floundering I often find the most unexpected insight in my own faith - and River sometimes is overwhelmed by her thoughts and feelings - believe me, I do so know this aspect of my mental health issues... maybe it is because I see the crew in terms of their relationships with one another that I relate to them all so much...

That leaves Jayne - strong, with quick reflexes and less likely to make emotional decisions, he is physical - not emotional... something I wish I had more of so as to balance my tendency to rule with my feelings, and my lack of physical strentgh (though I am working on that one!)

And... Kaylee... I am so like Kaylee - though I have left the 'I need everyone to like me' phase far behind - I still want to have as positive a connection with people as possibe, I try to see the person underneath the layers of 'armour' because I have layers myself for others to see through... I genuinely love my friends and family and tell them so - and I, too, continue to seek a soul-mate, though Kaylee probably has time on her side for that yet...

Huh! I did it again - long post... Does that answer the question? I am not sure that I have related the characters to my own emotional/mental health issues rather than my own personality - but it does, perhaps share a little more of the 'Magda-puzzle' with you all!

I don't much want to talk about high school.

I do relate to the characters, both as broken and whole. I've been both off and on (and actually pretty recently; this year anyway) When I discovered the 'verse I was whole and happy, and related to much in the show that was happy and fulfilled. When my world started tilting, I cried more over the show. When the world turned upside-down, I cried a lot more over the show, and started relating more to River than to Zoe. That broken feeling is what led me here in the first place; to distract myself and try to be more positive. My Browncoat family found me broken, and gave me some perspective, and helped me through quite a few rough patches, and helped me heal. I'm back to relating much more to Zoe than any of the other characters, though I've got certain aspects of Inara to me (not the angst or the hatred of 'complications', though...)
I think I'm very like Zoe in that I'm whole by myself, and then can be happy in a relationship. My inner Warrior Woman identifies, as well as the liking a dress with some slink

(though I am more emotional than her. Sometimes to the point of being Kaylee-like) I think that she's the most complete character on the show, and River is the most broken. I've related to both of them, and can use it as a bit of an emotional barometer now that I know. I think, as has been stated, that there's something for everyone to relate to, and that is the beauty of Firefly.
And yes, Shirly Manson is hot. I'm not the biggest Garbage fan, but I cannot deny her hotness. I've made one of my 'song pictures' for them if any of y'all are interested...

asortafairytale, this is a pic of Duke Erikson when I knew him. The band at the time was called Nickelplate Road. Duke is standing in back on the right.

Edit: I am really bad at getting the right size. The original is a large 8x10 glossy pic. Here's a close us of just him.

Several of my friends moved to Madison, Wisconsin, and I moved to Arizona. They sent me a couple of the songs that they had recorded as the group Spooner with Butch Vig. Duke is the 2nd from the left with Butch's head on his shoulder.

Then this is how you've seen him from the first DVD that Garbage made. Not the best. I tried to enlarge it, so it's not really clear.

Wow! Those are some shiny pictures VerseExplorer I am so happy to know that you also have trouble with the sizing of pictures - I am terrible at it!!

I will have to try to find photos of my friend Ben, he and I and another friend were at the heart of the drama department at our school... he went on to win the best actor AFI (Australian Film Industry) Award for 'The Year My Voice Broke' and also appeared in Vertcal Limit and The New World, If you've seen VL he's one of the naked Aussie brothers! He is actually a really lovely guy and has married a local girl and lived in the same house he lived in when I knew him at school!

WOW!!! Mei Mei - I totally adore your music picture - I love the concept of putting music into image and that is just way terrific! You are one talented lady!

And now for something completely different. An imponderance of sorts, one that I have yet to find in the archives (unlike some topics which get repeated every second or third thread. Admittedly, I'm only 11 threads in so far).

(A) Marriage or de-facto? And if marriage, any particular religious ceremony (ie Pagan, Catholic, Buddhist, Firefly-themed, etc)

(B) If marriage is the path taken, would the ladies prefer to take on their husband's surname or retain their own? (With the potential for inflicting a hyphenated surname on their children).

Good one! I'm sure I talked a little about this at some point, but maybe not in-depth. Or maybe it just wasn't a direct question.
I have many issues with the institution of marriage. I'm not trying to start an argument here, I'm just going to state what I have a problem with and people can agree or disagree as they see fit.
1) Marriage is a religious ceremony and should be kept out of laws. It could still be a ceremony if people wanted it, but I think 'legal marriage' should be replaced with something else. Maybe domestic partnerships for everyone? Something. Then the religious right could stop bleating about it and everyone could actually be equal.
2) There is a lot of 'ownership' overtones in the history of marriage. The 'giving away of the bride' tradition stems from this; when ownership of a woman literally passed from her father to her husband. Ick. No, it is not that way anymore, but it's a little too close for comfort. The taking of the husband's last name also has a feeling of this in my view, though I understand some might not feel that way. I see no reason to change or hyphenate my last name; too much hassle. I'm not too devoted to passing it on to my children, either. They'll get my genes, and that's enough. It would be more important that a name flowed and sounded nice. Why not keep those options open?
3) Too many people have wrong ideas about marriage. Like getting married will make a relationship 'perfect' and mean you don't have to work at it anymore. Or, on the flip side, that it will just become a grind, you will never have sex again, etc etc etc. It should not change a relationship in either of those ways, but being convinced that it will can have that effect. Signing something or not does not mean you will or won't stay together.
If I were to get married, I would keep my name, I would probably want a fairly simple handfasting ceremony, and if I were to sign something, it would just be a piece of paper for legal rights, whatever those might be.
I'm going to clarify a few things here. As I stated, I don't want to start an argument, and I know how people usually respond to me on this, so I'll just head it off:
No, I do not have a problem with the idea of marriage. I think pledging yourself to someone is a beautiful thing. However, a ceremony and a piece of paper doesn't really make you more likely to stay together because it has to do with you and your own committment to the relationship. I think someone can pledge that without ceremony or not mean it with ceremony. All that matters is how truly you mean it in your heart, and nothing external will provide, provoke, or prove that.
Yes, I do accept that, right now, marriage is legal, even if it is a violation of the separation of church and state. I know it isn't likely to change, but I thnk it should.
Since it is legal, I understand that it's necessary for legal things like being on a spouse's health insurance, etc. There are many good legal reasons to get married. I think that if that's really the reason you sign, and the marriage license is 'just a piece of paper' and has no bearing on your relationship because you were already commited, that's shiny.
That was really long-winded, but I think I stated everything pretty clearly. Did I?
