In classical and post-classical Rome, people rode on the left side. I looked into why briefly a few years ago, but was never able to find any definitive answer. In fact, there seems to be no real reason why countries drive on one side or the other. Although it’s pretty clear that most countries drive on the right, and many of those that do drive on the left, generally seem to because they are following tradition set by the British during Imperial rule. So there seems to be a tendency, at least today, to prefer the right-side of the road. But this is one of those things that suffer from a kind of Uncertainty Principle of historical precedent. That is that the side of the road that is used is likely so unimportant, yet clearly choosing one side or the other is of so much importance, that the tendency seems to be to pick whatever side happens to be the fad at one point in time and stick with it, which may mean that the side of the road that is used becomes influenced by things that have nothing to do with the roads at all, and therefore no traceability. This is further supported by evidence that suggest that as late as the early 20th century, both sides on the road were used in the US and Canada.
