oooooh - all my boys are on line together!! How are you Ged, Traveler & Jailbait??

I said something at the end of the last thread that bears repeating here I think...

We had some fairly serious topics towards the end of the thread and I just wanted to say that it is a privilege to have friends all over the world with whom I can joke around, or share some deeply personal things in a respected and respectful communtiy...

So... do we need a new Ponderance y'all?

Awww... shucks... Now I'm the one blushing Traveler... I must start a new thread more often!

How's Wisconsin? We are having a warm, but overcast day here... though we will be hotting up later this week...

Here's a 'ponderance' *tongue in cheek* - if I move out of this flat (that I have been house-sitting in for a month) on Tuesday and it has airconditioning (which I have not had to use to date) and I am moving in with my parents (no air con) for the 2 weeks prior to my next house-sitting placement... and my air-con in my car is not working but will be repaired on Thursday - which day do you think we are expecting a top temperature of 38c?? (Yes - very close to 100F...)

That's right. Your in the summer months while us North Americans are looking forward to getting our snow shovels out. Actually was not a bad day here. Your parents don't have air conditioning. I tend to go with out myself. But 100F day is hot. We do not see that temperture much around here. High 90's sometimes. I think some companies would close down if it got that hot. A factory can produce a lot of heat from its own machinery and they usually don't have a lot of circulation. You can't have windows open because of the dust. I work in an office so it has air. Hope your hot spell does not last long.

Actually magda I'm working all weekend...well most of it. Most of next week too. Free time is in short supply these days.

Heres a possible imponderable. How did you all figure out what you wanted to do when you grew up and went out into the big bad world(to those that are grown up that is)?, cause I'm finding that picking a career is something that I really have difficulty doing. Theres a few things i think i might like, but without the definite dream job I seem to just lack any real motivation to go for anything.

Wow! Ged! Y'all live in Dallas, Texas...? And you get to see the BDM on the BDscreen? I saw it myownself back on 23rd June and it was wonderful to see it larger than life!

'Firefly' is always an acceptable excuse my friend! But take good care of yourself please!! I don't like any of my Firefly family to be sick...

Are you planning to come to Dragon*Con next year? There are quite a few Imponderers going and I will be coming all the way from Australia!!

Anyway - enjoy the BDM and we'll catch you when you return!

Hey Navy... won't that just put you in the proximity of your *cough* work colleauges *cough*

and... sorry but I think you are confusing 'chronologically challenged' with 'grown-up'... I really still haven't decided Honey - and I am 39!

I knew I wanted to be an actor and left at the end of high school in pursuit of my dream, I worked for peanuts in a children's theatre for 6 months - then as a chekc out shick while I did further studies in my spare time for 6 months - then back to college to do a drama/media production course... back into the 'no career path work zone' while doing auditions and adding to my skills through workshops and amateur productions'... I acted directed, wrote and worked in the technical areas of the theatre before being accepted into the National Theatre Drama School in Melbourne - did the 3 year equivalent to a diploma and then decided that I needed time out to work out who I really was without the angst of constantly being told I 'wasn't quite what they were looking for'... travelled to the UK... returned and started to make some money - had a serious illness... depression... a breakdown and decided life was too short to spend working in a job I hated and trained as a nanny and have been working with wonderful families, enjoying the immediate privillege of helping to raise their children ever since! I am still an actress in my heart - but I know it's not my career... I would like to make money at something but I still have the age old dilemma of whether it is worth sacrificing job satisfaction for financial security...

Great Ponderance though Navy!!

Heh, second semester of my senior year in high school, I got a brochure from the university that my brother was attending. It had pretty pictures in it and said "biomedical engineering" and I thought "Wow! That sounds fun! I'll do that!" End of Story. That, however, doesn't honestly answer your question, as I am still trying to figure out what I wanna be when I grow up. I think "Biomedical Engineer" is just one of the points along the journey from A to Z.

In high school I too had the grand plan of going to university to study (chemical engineering for me though) but I got bored in my final years, wasn't really sure if I wanted to do it and in the end didn't have the qualifications cause I pretty much dropped out. I attended every lesson, but I rarely done my homework (bad habit) and never really knew how to study so failed miserably.

Then I got interested in the area of air traffic control, applied, rejected and I thought I'd try again. Seen the RAF were looking for them, I thought I'd like the military better than civillian and applied, but then pulled the plug on that myself cause I just wasn't quite ready. After working a few months in a dead end job I realised that they just dont work for me. I need something where I can always be learning and advancing, but getting motivated to do something about it just seems impossible at the moment. My heads too full of other things and I just can't focus on where I want to be.

Issues with Homework, Navy, eh? Who'd have thunk it?

I actually relate to you more than a little - I did consider studying history and going on to either archival work - I still get a little high on the smell of historical documents and books - or beoming an historian... but I wasn't sure I had the passion required to commit to a course for that long - I also had a problem with home-work (there's a lesson in that for you too, Grasshopper - I am still single!!) I always thought life and relationships were more important that study... though I seem to spend more of my time doing self-researched study that focusing on life and relationships these days... go figure? I too, felt I needed to be intellectually stimulated and constantly challenged, which just didn't happen for me at school and I couldn't see it happening at university either... I actually think I might go to Uni one day - but there's no rush - I am only 39...

Traveller sorry I missed your post somehow... maybe I shouldn't start more threads - can't keep up with them...

I can understand that you don't have such high temps in Wisconsin... we have high 30s-low40s for several days at a time here and it gets mighty hot - my parents place should be declared a criminal act on those occassions... A cool change might not stick and it usually takes days for the house to cool down after one of those heat waves... (high 30s = high 90s/low 40s = over 100F!!) we have a very dry heat too... not at all humid usually - and it can postively sear your throat and lungs when you get into the car (always hotter - temps of 50 - 60c + are usual in a closed, unventilated car in summer) and you need to be constantly drinking water... I literally drink gallons a day in the hotter months (3 litres = 1 gallon!)

I'll take your heat, you can come here for my cold, wind and torrential rain. The weaher here is just horrible just now. We had to walk maybe a block to get from the cinema to my car the other night and got totally soaked through, squelching shoes and everything. Not very nice at all.

Yay for scarf rock.

Sorry, just thought I'd make an oblique comment about the band whose song gives us the title for this thread. I have nothing against Eskimo Joe (or Esky Mojo as they've been mis-announced before).

More dry heat here, which may not let up until some time partway through next year. We're up into the mid-high 30's (or 90s and 100s for those imperialists out there) every day, or near enough to it.

VERSEEXPLORER

Morning, Imponderables.
I think finding a profession, that gives some satisfaction and also pays a salary that you need to live on, is one of the most difficult tasks. When I graduated from high school, I didn't know what I wanted to do, so I got a job as a long distance phone operator. I worked there for several years, and I was bored. Most of my friends were having fun times in college, so I decided to go back to school. After three and a half years I dropped out of college and moved to Phoenix. I worked for 10 years as a radio dispatcher for the Sheriff's Office, and then I felt it was time to decide on a profession. I went back to school, and got my degree in education with a speciallization in early childhood, an ESL (English as a Second Language) endorsement, and a master's in special education. I was 35 when I found the perfect job for me.

Navy, it seems a bit boring to write out my career choices. There were a lot of great times throughout those years.

The hard part about chosing what you want to do is finding something that you enjoy. It might not come to you right away, but don't give up.

Hey, Nico. Sorry to hear about the dry heat. Our summers here in Arizona are very HOT and dry. It does get up to 120 sometimes in August. Right now it's our best time. It's in the mid 70s.

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Holy cheese, what a discussion has been had!
Um, I'm catching up from the last thread. My head is spinning a little bit, because it tends to when philosophy is spoken of by such wise people (Hell's Kitten, I think it will be so fun to chat with you at D*C, and I can see you and me and magda and my friend gorramndoll all getting no sleep because we are having too much fun!) So I don't know if I can respond properly at this point. JQ did bring up that I have spoken of what I see as the spiritual act of sex (and, I must point out, DTH and I seem to have similar beliefs in this) and I've found the most recent thread in which this is talked about; I know I've gone rather in-depth twice, but I'm not sure which early imponderable thread it was, so I'll post this one and anyone brave enough to go through the archives will likely see my first ramble on the subject (It might have been in the very first thread, but it might have been a few threads down from there, too...) http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=25083 is, I think, the last time it was talked about.
'K, that was a bit longer ramble than I meant it to be...

Navy! You didn't do what I suggested, did you?

As for what I want to be when I grow up... I've gone through a lot of interests that never seemed to fit. Mostly now I just wanna be my own boss. I get so tired of the bosses breathing down my throat, so I want to be in charge. How that will ultimately manifest... It's hard to know just now.

Hey Odds!! It's so good to see you around here more - are you finally settled in one place for a while? I guess you should have found something for your grandma by now... but if you need any advice - just ask us!

Hello Phoenix Rose How are you Mei Mei? I always love to hear your take on things!

Hey Navy I think it is a kind of long weekend in the States so most of our FFF.net family are either away from their work computers or away from home altogether... it does make for a slow time for the rest of us though... doesn't it?

Mind you - what do we have to complain about really? There's a good Scottish representation, a couple of Aussies, and a quality (if not quantity) group of Americans... so we are pretty lucky really!

Hey Nico! Thanks for the heads-up about the coming weather - that is the way this summer is going to be I think...

VerseExplorer - how are you Kaylee Clone? That sounds too hot ever for me I think... mind you - you'd fit in well here in summer, a lot of my friends who's visited from overseas (admitedly, mostly from England) have not coped with our hot, dry weather at all...!!

Oh - Keeping the Faith just came on TV... does anyone else love this movie?? I can't wait to visit Little Albatross in New York City now... (Thinking of you all Bryce!!)

As for doing what I'd like to do... eventually I want to go to graduate school, get a PhD in psychology and start practicing. I may just end up getting a terminal master's first, but we'll see how it goes. Right now I work in technology and I love computers and all, but it's not fulfilling.

Hey all:) ..Magda- HUGS and PR hmm I'd love for you to be my boss:)

As for the how did I know what I wanted to be, I didn't. When I got to college my parents would keep asking " so what's the major this week?" It's why I have degrees in Medieval History ( minors in theater and English Lit) Psychology ( minors in anthropology and sociology) and then my mom suggested that I should go back and get a teaching degree and teach history. So while I was getting a teaching degree in geography and history, I was introduced to someone who mentioned that if I'd be interested there was a state program to get a teaching degree in 3 years instead of 4 if I was interested in Special Ed...my mom thought it'd be great so I did it and managed by sheer luck to fall into a fab program and job I absolutely adore teaching kids with emotional and behavioral problems...Ok upon reading that I realize, my job history is all total luck and no result of any planning of any kind... However, I do have 4 pretty degrees ( bachelors in History,Psychology, and Special Education and a Masters in Psychology..plus I'm really good at trivial pursuit)I realize this is completely unhelpful to those looking for career paths:)

Hello Magdalena:

Just woke up. Still a little fuzzy.

Imponderables is about career choices.

I graduated in 1970. Vietnam was was breathing down my neck. Got a call from a friend about a school where I would get a draft deferment. Learned Tool and Die design. After a few years ended up in hydraulics. If you own a Volvo or Mercedes you may have a valve I helped develope in your engine or suspension system. Good luck.

Since Milwaukee is an industrial town I have been lucky in keeping employed. But our economy fluctuates so much that I have had several companies either close down or have to lay off a lot of people. My resume has a lot short term jobs on it. But I am with a pretty solid outfit right now. Nine years and counting.

I started on a drawing board with paper and pencil and now I sit in front of a computer creating three dimensional components. A lot of changes since I first started on this career. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to take courses in the software I am using. It is not so important as to what products you have designed as to what software you know how to use.

Well now I have to wash up and get something to eat.

See you guys latter.

Hello msg:

Volvo used to claim they were they safest car made. Gotta love a car that will take a 50 MPH hit like that. Can't claim I was part of that particular part of the car.

Most of our valves are used in the fuel emisions. With government standards increaseing every auto manufacturer is trying to find ways to reduce fuel consumption.

EDIT:
Just welcomed another Browncoat named DM.
That is always a good feeling.

Hmm, some parts of a car are supposed to crumple and absorb the shock of an impact, like the front. Strangely, you may have felt the impact more than the other guy because your car didn't take any punishment apart from a dent.

Sounds like a decent safety cage on that volvo though.

Wow, MsG! I knew you were smart from how well you present arguements but I wasn't aware that we were in the presence of a bonafide genius! You must have so many letters after you name that it wouldn't fit on an envelope!

As for NAVYSEILS's imponderable about knowing what you want to do with your life, I too am still working on that. I remember telling people at the age of 10 that I wanted to be a Zoologist when I grew up, because I wanted to work with animals but didn't want them to be always sick so being a vet was out (thank goodness, it's impossibly hard to do in the UK!), plus it sounded kinda cool!

Well I graduated with my Zoology degree nearly 7 years ago and I'm still not working with animals, but I've got being a temporary secretary and filling out job applications down pat!

I'm not giving up though. One day I might actually be offered a job I would actually enjoy doing!

Hello Imponderers... it's Sunday afternoon here now, and I think I caught up fairly quickly - the weekends do seem to go a little slowly at the best of times - long weekends even more so!

Hi Ged! - Dragon Con is the largest Sci Fi/Gaming/Comic convention in the world and is held in Atlanta, Georgia each year on the Labour Day weekend - next year it is 31st Aug - 3rd Sept & I am planning to fly over to the US to meet as many of my US based Browncoat friends in one place as I possibly can! Please say you'll try to join us??? Here's the link to their website if you want to understand a lot more than I could possibly explain http://www.dragoncon.org/

NICODEMUS

Sorry Magda, I've been busy. Amongst other stuff, I've been acquainting myself with Flock, the browser that has photobucket built into it, allowing me to browse/drag'n'drop pics from my account (or other people's) without opening a new window/tab. So I'm currently raiding people's accounts for many emotes and random pics to lighten up these boards with.

If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)

I'm supposed to grow up?

Teehee,it's good to know higher education does have benefits!

As to the career path stuff....I'm still in high school, so I'm not entirely sure what I want to do yet, but I do know that I would like to do something with the environment. Really just something that I would enjoy doing, or something like Ms.G's job that would be very fufilling...Like I said, I'm not exactly sure as of yet though...

Ah, and there's no better way to lighten up a thread than with GIR and penguins!

Oh... oh... oh... I think you broke my squeeee...

Why hasn't this been released on Region 4 DVD yet?? ... oh that's right... I'm saving up to go to the USA next year...

Must remember... Dragon*Con... Penguin hugs... 'bigassbearhugs'... marching in the Independant Brigade... meeting my Imponderables friends and family... coffee... rivulets of coffee... mmmmmmm...

OK! I'm back - no! Not buying any DVDs for quite a while...

Hello Dear Penguin!! I've missed you over the weekend - hope your birthday was wonderful!

Hey there Traveler, Hell's Kitten, Nico, Phoenix Rose, ASoFT & my gorgeous Whimsy! Thanks you for all the smile-making joy you've brought to the thread! It's good to see this place is not deserted when I return 24 hours later - though I think it will get busy again in a few hours from now... unfortunately my time is limited tonight - I only have a short span...

ASoFT My sister is studying nursing with a view to going into Chinese Medicine, and she's just turned 35! Her husband is 34 and a few years ago he worked days and studied nights to become a Solar Power technician - he now runs his own business intalling Solar Power - and they are also building their own straw bale house - this is definitely a growing industry in this day and age - so it might be a good time to study for something in this environmental field! All the best with finding your passions...
