Well, as long as I'm here, and as a resident average American, middle-aged, white collar, white middle-class male, I think it's only appropriate for me to add my very important opinion on feminism here.

I find myself in compplete agreement with PhoenixRose on this, as has been echoed by others here.

I think the second wave, call it the militant phase, had to overcompensate a bit just so that a future equilibrium to occur. I agree in principle that if the choice is to "stay at home", or to become Brainless, Bubble-headed Barbies the option should be available and not judged. I do however understand the horror of the original freedom fighters at the prospect of having their sacrifices reduced to Paris Hilton.

No comment on the feminism, but I do think we will have a female president sometime in my lifetime, as well as an African-American (or other ethnicity) president. I think it would drastically change things, and it would most likely be a big improvement on the current occupant of that chair.

I guess I just find it interesting that even countries with far more adversive attitudes toward women ( India, South Africa, Serbia, the Philippines, etc.) have had female leaders and we with our " progressive" attitudes haven't. I do believe we are, if not immediately close, at least very close to having a Female President. However, while there may be an "Oh my God!" moment for everyone, I don't think the overall change will be radical. Just as it took 100 years from Emancipation to Civil Rights, and 50 years from Suffrage to Equal Rights (and bear in mind neither movement has completely finished its work), it'll be a few terms before the ripple manifests itself significantly. Pushing too much change would be political suicide. All it took was some misplaced body fluid to begin an impeachment, and a woman in power would present a much lovelier target. (It's interesting to note here that a misplaced war couldn't rouse such an action and still won't...)

Then there are ones who want anything and everything good throw their way but none of the bad. "I want equal pay to men!"..."mandatory signup for the draft at 18...uh no how about men keep that one" Granted the equal pay thing seems like it should have been taken care of a long time ago, but still there are differences between men and women. There will never be perfect equality. Nor should there be. Though I don't even know if that's really the feminist movement either. So, if someone could define feminism for me that'd be great. A list of what they're for and against would be nice too.

Don't know if the "Movement" is really representative of the post-modern feminists have of themselves, so it may be that your question is unanswerable.

hmmm I think it would depend on the guy and his reason for holding the door, but for the most part, I like it. ( I just had a co-worker who would rush to open doors for me and every time he'd say " I don't want you to hurt your tiny little hands" He was always really condesending to me with comments and things so I really hated him opening doors for me)

Yes, little children, I’ve been on antidepressants since late July/early August, about the same time I stopped lurking and started posting on FFF.net. (While I believe there’s no such thing as coincidence, I choose to not get at a correlation between the two events…)

I am not a pill popper. Not a friend of doctors’ offices. Not a phobia, just come from stock that’s equal parts stout and stoic. But, realistic enough to allow for the truth, once I see it, which can take inordinately long.

For now, my meds serve my needs to a degree. Time will tell what if any adjustments will need to be made. I applaud you taking the step James. And I applaud your fabulous blogspot, Magda, sweet Magda. (Everyday, everyday, I ask myself how is it she is still single. I understand your vow of celibacy as I understand your vow of poverty as I understand your lack of a vow of silence. But c’mon! If the right Knight came along you’d forget all that, wouldn’t you? I've said it before and I'll say it again; there's no problem with a man wanting to hold doors for me as long as he doesn't mind me holding the occasional door for him.
And I do know a woman, family friend, who was in the army for a very long time and has some very scary scars and only left the Reserve because she got cancer which she has since beat the tar out of, but now she's a little too old to serve and still might go into remission. She enjoys her life and takes no crap from nobody. I've also seen female janitors, though they don't seem to enjoy their life so much. Trash collecting? Don't think so, but I bet it exists somewhere.
As for myself, no, I would not want to be drafted. I don't think there should be a draft at all and only those who want to serve should serve. And, you know, if there were to be one of those huge wars, someone has to stay here and make sure the country keeps running, right? Don't want those soldiers coming home to a big nothing. That's my excuse, anyway. That and I don't really want to kill anyone.
I should go to bed, I really should...

*edit* I am not going to enter into a discussion about medication because I could offend many people here. Let's say I use alternatives (homeopathy, not herbs, just so we're clear) and find them extremely effective and just leave it at that.

Hey over half the janitors at my current school and at least half the janitors at my former school were women...and guys I notice you're very underrepresented in the lunch preparer area, and the stay at home dads are thin on the ground...so lets get on that shall we?? Just kidding( well mostly) As for welders, meat packers, and the like, pretty sure I've seen women doing those jobs too. Also, we're aren't allowed to sign up for selective service, but I don't know any women ( who aren't mothers of young children) who wouldn't sign up ...however I do believe the man should have to kill the spiders ( but that's just my phobia)

I see there is a discussion happening and I'm not in it. I guess I kinda am now.
Holding doors? I'll hold a door for anyone, male or female. Its a courtesy thing. But when I'm accomanying a woman somewhere, I open the door and walk in first, holding the door so she can enter. Been to way too many bad places. Became a habit.
Can anyone tell me why men and women rarely say what they are really thinking? I notice there is a great amount of restraint in my dealings with women. I admit it. Sometimes its good and sometimes its bad. The good part is that I tend to be bold when the time is not calling for boldness. The bad part is that I will communicate on only a surface level. It sucks, but it seems to leave less chance of pain later.
Did I just answer my own question or am I just talkin' out my butt as usual?

You should have him put them outside, not kill them. Spiders are very useful creatures. Flies, ants, and mosquitos, however, I will kill indiscriminately.

On the issue of the more physical labor jobs, I am sure there are women who do it, but it is not the norm, and I have never personally known a woman who genuinely wanted to make that her career. Most women I talk to, especially about gender equality, are into business, or engineering, or something like that. I agree on the food preparer, I have only seen one male do the job all through high school (there were a couple in my college cafeteria). I would give anything I have to be able to be a stay at home dad. Anything.

It'll probably be me because I can go back to my job with no damage to my career after a 5 year absence, but being in banking MisterG kind of has to keep on the track.

NV- see I'd be fine for the door opening thing, but I'm really open and blunt and I cannot count how many guys that has sent running in panic for the hills... so that might explain girls being less than open with guys, I know a lot of women who feel that guys don't want to know what they really think/feel.
For example I've had more than one guy stop dating me when I was honest with them about what I wanted ( like saying I didn't like the movie they picked or that I'd rather go to a different place for food)I wasn't rude I just didn't defer to their opinion. On guy even explained not wanting to date me by telling me I was too much like a guy and didn't flirt correctly or act girly enough. When pressed he said that beating him at games( especially trivial pursuit and the like) not letting him pick all the stuff we did on the date, and arguing politics and such with him was just not feminine.

Thank god for women like MSG! I hate cutesy docile chicks that can't make up their minds let alone speak it. Gimme a woman that can tell me exactly what she wants and I'll show you a very happy (and slightly scary) smile.
