Mal's suspenders, do y'all like the thin ones from FF, or the more 3-D-like ones from Serenity?

I am shocked that more people haven't posted to this thread because, frankly, it's one of the best topic titles I've ever seen. Mal's suspenders have been a topic of constant discourse between my friends and me. They all make fun of me because I love his suspenders so damn much while they all think they're really dorky. Maybe it's because we all were forced to wear suspenders in marching band.

I think I'd choose the fancy futuristic movie suspenders.

Gah -- don't even get me started on the movie suspenders. They were the one -- THE ONE -- thing I didn't like about the big-screen adaptation.

To me, they screamed too loudly, "Look! It's not the present or the wild west -- it's the future, because they don't have suspenders like that nowadays."

They seemed impractical, overly designed and didn't fit in with the rough-and-tumble style of functional clothing everyone wears. It'd be different if they harkened to some kind of web gear or something, but, nope, they were just Future Space Suspenders.

Enough of an opinion for you?

Hee hee! I guess that's a good point, as it was also something my ex-boyfriend used to complain about when we watched the show. He'd say, "They just put that in to look like the future. There's no practical application for something like that at any time!" But what can I say? I'm a sucker for aesthetics.

To be honest I never even noticed a difference between the series and the movie. Darn. Now I am going to have to rewatch both to see what everybody is talking about.

Mal's movie suspenders?
Ick. Just ick.
They are so....faux.
Look as if they'd smell funny if they got hot.
Or you could sit and stab holes in them if bored.
Man needs something to hold up his pants?
Fine.
Gorramn things don't have to look "chunky."
Or however you'd say they look.
FF suspenders look as if they're enough to do the job.
Not overkill.

Yeah I definitely preferred the FF suspenders. I didn't cringe or anything for the serenity ones, but the older ones looked more rough and western. They didn't scream woohoo we made a movie and see look those suspenders prove he's a space cowboy!

I also vote for the TV series suspenders. Even liked better the original shirts with just the regular buttons. The movie suspenders was too fancy and the movie shirts had these fancy clasps too.

Hehe, I agree with this, I think its safe to say that pretty much everyone here is a "geek", so we wouldn't really be bothered by them...and I do have to wear suspenders for band...
But, yeah, I would have to say that I perfer the ones from the series. They just seem to fit the western portion of it better, and that's really the part that makes Firefly/Serenity different from other sci-fi shows.

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

I think I like the originals better, mostly because of the comments exchanged between Mal and Inara:

Inara: I understand if you need to go prepare for that "It's 10 in the morning" issue.

Mal: Yeah. Better go do that. 'Cause I think this
is more of an evening look.

And, at some point, he snaps the suspenders. So, yeah, I like the originals, just because of the history, and... because I don't remember what the movie ones look like.

I fell in love with Mal's canvass suspenders... The way they widened at the shoulders, the little cross piece in the back, the texture of the fabric. IIRC, they were WWII suspenders, and that kind of history - a soldier's suspenders - just was another way Mal's costume spoke of his character.

I liked his thin leather ones, too. For when he was going all... incognito.

Hated the rubber movie ones. Hated all the little rubber appliques in his costume, especially the ones on his pants. I could accept the one on the coat, if I write it off as a mend. The shirts were ok, though I still prefer the simplicity of the buttons.

But all that rubber...when he walks away from Simon at the end of the one-er, he squeaks!

Well I really liked the movie and all, but those suspenders just killed it for me. What was Joss thinking!?! First Book, then Wash - did he have to kill the suspenders too?!? Is nothing sacred? Oh well, at least he didn't make the mule look more or less like a VW Thing.

Then again...maybe he did?

Yup, prefer the show suspenders. Don't have a big problem with the coat and the shirts, and can't remember what the pants look like. Honestly, I couldn't remember any difference anyways, so obviously, the change wasn't enough to actively bother me, which is good. I had to look at screencaps to know what you guys were talking about. But yeah, the rubber in the movie looks awkward and clunky and uncomfortable - very uncomfortable - and it makes me think of a giant zip tie or some other thing that would go on a robot. Or a car. Or an engine.

Kaylee: Cap'n, I need your suspenders so I can bypass the compression coil again.

The series' version, all the way.

They were just so gosh darn cute. If I want space-agey stuff, I'll go watch BSG or Babylon 5 (not meaning any offense to those shows, I happen to be a fan of B5). I think the old suspenders reflect the western-y feel of the show, which you lost a great deal of in the film.

STINKINGROSE

Well, practically speaking..the movie rubber suspenders (braces, whatever)would slip around on your shirt less, and would cut into your shoulders less when your gunbelt was dragging your pants down. (Just ask any woman who's worn a brassiere with thin straps).
Still think they look like part of a belt out of the engine he scavenged after it snapped on Kaylee one day. Or he mugged a kid for their Tonka truck.

The series set had style, panache, character. They lay better on the shoulders. Probably gave him a wedgie or something.

I decided that he had been shot in the arm at some point while wearing his brown coat and that pathetic patch job was the best he could do.
MAN was that ugly! I shudder every time I think of it. Looks like he tried to sew it shut, then when that didn't work he hit it with epoxy or something.
See? You can make a story to explain almost anything. (It's just not reading, can you make it bigger? Really scuff it up? No, bigger. More batchelory.)

The shirt? The movie shirt looked a little more dapper than usual with the fasteners and change in cut. The series shirt looked more homespun. Except that grey metallic polo/izod/garanamals thing he wore to the space bazaar. Ick. It looked scratchy.

Sorry. I'm coming off as a terrible costume snob, aren't I? Never ask for my opinion, you'll probably get it.

..and now I can't get down.

So right, BG. The cringe-worthy Wash-wear must
be a hard-copy of somebody's B&D or S&M dreams.

And no, the rubber deco on the sacred Coat is
*not* excusable. We know what a mend should
look like; there's one on the upper left arm
after (and sometimes before -- heh) Patience
wings the Captain on Whitefall.

Series suspenders were canvas. One hopes no
animals suffered in their making.
