So I am very very new to Firefly. I originally had Serenity and watched it about 17 times. I've had it since last year, but I just found out that it was from a television show called Firefly, so i watched the episodes and became immediatly hooked. Then, with a sick feeling in my stomach, it came to my attention that after watching the 14th episode, i think, that there weren't anymore. I have 2 questions, why'd the cancel it and how could I get more involved in the Browncoat community?!

Why did they cancel it?
Well... that's a question that fans have been asking from the day it was canceled! We will never understand entirely but the concensus is that were a number of mistakes made.
Here are just a few...

1) Time slot. Firefly was run in entirely the wrong timeslot for it's genre.

2) The two hour "Serenity" pilot wasn't aired. Viewers first introduction came with "The Train Job". It left too many gaps, didn't give you time to fall in love with it, I think.

3) The advertising provided was horrific. Some of the original ads that ran on Fox can be found at YouTube. They are painful, misleading, misconcieved, mis... It's just bad, okay?

Okay Question 2.
Coming here was a great first step in getting more involved in the Browncoat community. Congratulations!!!!!
Now, check the listings for a Browncoat group in your area. Most states have at least one group.

Sundays, we do a Virtual Shindig online, a chance for Browncoats to gather and chat and get to know each other. I... suck because I haven't been in a long time... but they're lots of fun!

Check out some of the activities that Browncoats are doing- the ongoing fundraising activities for Equality Now, for example; the fundraiser cookbook; the great music of Bedlam Bards...

Gosh, there are so many ways to get involved that I surely can't list them all here.

Welcome, TheFeed, to what is, hands down, the best, most loving, most involved fandom in existance!

Only Fox knows for sure why they canceled Firefly, but...

- they insisted on airing the episodes out of order, leaving many viewers disinterested and/or confused

- they gave Firefly the timeslot of death

- they are evil?

But more importantly, WELCOME! You can get more involved in the community by reading and posting here, as well as some other great places on the web (whedonesque.com is Joss Whedon's website/blog). Depending on where you're from there may even be a local browncoat group for some real-life experiences (shindigs and the like).

Stay shiny!!

Don't make faces.

the unaired script:

watch the R. Tam Session vids: http://www.hittarivertam.nu/

and buy the 'Serenity' comics published by Dark Horse,
and have you joined the Browncoats yet?

and I highly recommend Joss Whedon's 'Serenity: The Official Visual Companion' which has more in the scrip than made it to the screen (so it is a VERY fun read)
besides it has story boards, drawings by the costume and set designers, and lots of production memos which are must reads (really reveal everything Joss wants in this film, and how patiently he feels about it all).

what else am I forgetting?
oh yeah...don't miss out on this (huge spoilers):

here is an old thread that covers these and other things:

Welcome home, TheFeed. You're #24120 on the
crew and it's right shiny to be able to greet you.

Please partake of the strawberries and
Mudder's Milk, then join us in questioning the
buffet.

You've had excellent advice here already as to
how to make your life Browncoatier. It'll keep
you busy a while, I venture.

Among the best things you can do is to let your
friends and family know what they're missing. Share the Firefly goodness around, bring in more
fans, and help make the phenomenon big enough to
warrant more film or TV. There's a lot more story
to tell.

Why didn't Firefly succeed?

Hmm...

Imagine, for a moment, that I hire a painter to make paintings. This painter turns out some real beaut's that sell well. Excellent. I sign the painter to a contract. The painter then paints something I just cannot fathom anyone really liking.

Have I lost faith in my painter to make me money? No, not really. But I do want to get her back to making things I believe will sell well. So I don't promote this new painting style of hers; and really, I'd kinda like to see it die off quickly so we can get back to what sells well.

I am Fox in the above scenario. We didn't understand what we had, didn't give it a chance. Believed our artist, Joss, would be addicted to eating from our hand and so, if we killed the project, then he'd return to a form we were more comfortable with. Everybody wins, he's making good television and we're making money.

We thought we had him. Only thing is, our artist left us. Well, screw that, we'll show him. Gonna make it hard for him to paint anywhere else. So on the sly I ask my friends to, you know if they could kinda not be too interested in my artist for I wouldn't really like that too much. And I'm a pretty powerful figure, all told. So yeah, people listen. This is business, if you knew how much we do behind closed doors to "help" artist make the decision to stay with us - you'd probably be shocked.

Sure, I'll buy the rights to your next painting, I say to artists. Then, I sit on the painting and wait. I wait until the artist folds, caves like wet tissue paper because they want their work to be enjoyed (they're saps like that. While we are business folk, these people luh-uhve their work - yeah, yeah, whatever). I particularly like buying a work, then not producing it until they sign on to do more work. Ah, then I got em.

At any rate, in the end, all it comes down to is we asked for a painting and we didn't like what we got. So we canned it and are hoping for another.

We believe that if we keep applying pressure in just the right amounts in just the right places our artist will come back to us.

Oh, and Harlan Ellison is the devil. Just so you know. What that man says to rile up writers is damaging to our calm.

***

Or something like that. The above, by the way, is pure conjecture and likely has little basis in reality. Just one man thinking, here. Or not, as the case may be.

Yours,
-Rhae

VERSEEXPLORER

Welcome, TheFeed, it's always exciting when someone new finds the 'Verse. If you're really interested in the history of Firefly, check out the DVD "Done the Impossible." It's a story of the end of Firefly and the Browncoat fans that have helped to keep it alive.

You've taken the first step of becoming involved in the Browncoat community by joining FFF.net. We are a friendly group. If you ever need anything, just get on the Cortex and send us a wave. There is always someone around.

The other thing that you can do is spread the word to every person that you know. The Browncoat community is growing every day by sharing the DVDs with family and friends.

CANTER

Welcome TheFeed!

You've seen what the others said about why Firefly was cancelled.

Tim Minear and Joss Whedon like to joke that the network couldn't understand why there were horses in the show.. which is funny, if you consider it was always promoted as a space western.

We each have our own little way of sending the signal on.

I'm pushing the TV poll on http://www.richlabonte.net/tvvote/index.html, where we're competing with other shows' fans to be known as the best TV show of all time.

Go there and vote every hour, and help annihiliate the opposition. We're currently in third. We've consistently been getting the most votes per day for the past month or so, and want to improve on that. Tell your friends about firefly. Tell your family. Blackmail them into buying the dvd's.
The more we are, the stronger we are...

GOMITHROUS

Well I think the biggest reason F*X cancelled the show is that the episodes were aired out of order which was entirely their fault, that and the fact that F*X spawned from the unholy whomb of a devil.

Also, welcome!!!
I haven't been here that long myself but in my experience Browncoats are the nicest people you will ever meet, minus the trolls of course but they don't last long

My Firefly tip of the day is DVD christmas Cards, I picked up a cheap DVD labeler and made up some Happy Christmas Labels, attached them to DVD's containing the first two episodes and handed them out as X-mas cards.

Hiya TheFeed welcome to the boat :)

the above posts pretty much sum it up. Firefly was a show that began it's life unseen by the multitudes so F*X canned it. The story could end there (and if it had been a bad show it would have) and not a word be said about it.The only thing, it wasn't. It was a incredibly good, NO GREAT show, so the question. Why isn't it back? That's what the browncoats here and all over the web want to know. Me'thinks there may be power-politics involved. You know the powers that be think that they know what you want better than you know what you want. Course they "Can't seem to wrap their head around the concept" that what they're putting out now IS NOT what we want. So instead of being highly perceptive like they like to think they are they have fallen into the mode of "The ppl aren't falling in love with what we want. What's wrong with them?"

The power purplebellies aren't stupid. Anyone old enough to get on a computer can find this place (or others like it)and see the love for this show. Is it the coin to be made? don't think so. Nope the money is there. It may just be that in this case art is a true reflection of life " Me and mine have to suffer for their better world". Their fingers are on the on/off switch and they enjoy the heck out of that.

As to why it was canceled, you should see the commmercial that Fox ( ) aired for it:
