What do you all think about planning a shindig for March? The Balitcon's in May, right? That seems a little far away....

Plus, what do you do at a shindig?

March would work for me. I think a shindig is whatever the planner makes it into. For example, it could be fancy, like the one in the episode, or it could be completely casual.

Dude, I am /not/ wearing a pink layer-cake dress.

I was thinking some sort of show-related thingy and general get-to-know-you stuff. And food. I'd like to build up to some of the fancy stuff other groups do, like charity events in the show's name. But we don't know each other yet, and I'd rather meet in a quiet setting than at a convention.

But I still suggest Baltimore, since it seems to be equidistant for most people, including the PA folks. But it's a bit of a haul for the N.Va people. It may be a good idea to get a Metropolitan DC group and a separate N.MD/PA group so that no one has to schlep too much. (Although rumor has it Southern PA is now part of the "greater DC area"!)

Any thoughts?

I did, and I was the only one there "representing". Other than what I was wearing, I didn't see any Firefly stuff at the whole show. I was hoping to pick up one of the 'keep flying' shirts or something, but there was nada.

Somewhat depressing... you folks need to get out there and be visible!

Well, I'm free for the weekends of March 19th-21st and of March 26th-28th. I think Baltimore is a good place for all of us to meet if those in VA are willing to drive a bit. Where is a good meeting place in Baltimore? I don't know Baltimore at all because I hardly go to the big cities.

Numerous places to meet. There could be a meeeting down at the Inner Harbor at one of the venues there, like the National Aquarium or some other large, easy to find location.

Bunch of restaurants down that way too. Maybe meeting at a museum or a planetarium would work. I would be up for that as well. The folks up north would eed to drive down 83 until they got into the downtown area.

What about near another famous ship that got taken out of active duty-like the Constellation? Once people meet there they could decide on a place to hang out at, given the limitation that many butts would need many seats in the same place.

If folks are driving from Richmond, then B'more might be a tad too north. Columbia might work for that then.

Keep me in the loop.

Whatever works. I figure the purpose is to meet and yak about FF. Anything else is incidental, unless the yakking is supposed to occur in some pre-defined framework like a party or a pub crawl or something.

March may very well be a sunny time, and as for indoors, plenty of places to go downtown, plenty.

Nail down the time and meeting place first, then let the commitee gathered therein decide where they want to go. Keep it simple so it gets done.

Merely suggestions, mind you.

From my thread on the OB:

Just got back from my local Baltimore Farpoint convention at the Hunt Valley. Great great convention, tons of fun, and I'm on the staff and got to help with the masquerade (as a runner).
Of course, can't live up to last year. Ah, the famous Snow Con. Anyone remember the freak snow storm exactly a year ago in the Maryland area? Yeah, we all got snowed in at Farpoint. It had to be extended, because the roads were all closed. None of the guests could leave, we were all in that hotel together. There was snow piled up outside like I've never seen since 1996. Adventure of a lifetime.

But that was last year ;) I get off-topic.

I regret that there was little more than a Firefly open-discussion, which I of course attended. And, in my own small way, I represented by doctoring my staff badge (see - stick a tiny piece of paper into it) to include the message : "You can't take the sky from me, Firefly" And it worked, I got a few people commenting on the show, started conversations, peaked interest in them as aint yet seen our little show. Even got a friend who saw a few episodes and hated the show to consider giving it another try. (He even joined the open discussion, which was interesting)

I heard that someone was walking around in a Jayne hat. I wandered greatly, but never bumped into him. Too bad.

Long live the Browncoats. Oh, and I love cons. They're the best. When are any of the Firefly team gonna get themselves over to the east coast to be guests at a con here? I really REALLY would like it very much. *cough cough ahem*

So, anyone else on this forum attend Farpoint?

That would be my husband, Lodril, up there. I was out of town, so he went /on Valentine's Day/. ;) Anyway, I made him the hat.

I was wondering if we could plan ahead for next year (now now, i mean, but you know, before it comes around again) and for other conventions in the area to, as he put it, "represent". It'd be nice to show some episodes (ask Fox's permission maybe), get a booth (I could sell those stylin' hats for near nothing; we could sell buttons with slogans; blue sun shirts...), and generally create a buzz.

But yeah, a shindig in March would be nice. We should check out http://www.shindigified.com/for ideas about what to do with ourselves. I don't want anything gimmicky--just, you know, not that awkward, "You're shorter than I pictured" kind of moment.

As for location, we also have folks in southern PA, not just norhern VA. I really think we should break up into two groups or something so that no one has to suffer unduly (not me--I live on the Beltway in MD and work in Arlington so anything goes). But hey--it's your hairshirt.

Ah, well, most of the 'con I was in armor, so you may have seen me sans Firefly stuff.

I also wore a Blue Sun shirt. My repetoire isn't limited to just hats you know.

Well, it's apparently limited to Jayne apparel at the moment, but I might break out in a Hawaiian shirt or something. Actually, I'd probably end up in an Alliance bellhop uniform before a Hawaiian shirt, but you never know.

Wish I'd seen there was an 'open discussion', or anything Firefly related going on. I pretty much just hung out with my 501st crowd. It was our official first event as a new Garrison, so we were all celebratory. We also had all those hot "troopies" in miniskirts this year, so the various other convention events are mostly a peripheral blur. ;)

So the next big con is Balticon, I guess... several months off. But never too early to start planning. I'm already working on my next costume project or three, and hopefully some of it will be ready by then. No Firefly stuff yet though. What else can one do at a convention to bring attention to the plight of our lovely series?

Hmmm, we could TRY to pick out a decent Chinese restaurant in the Baltimore/Columbia area. That could be fun, sit around a big round table and pass the entrees while chatting.

I am definitely familiar with the Columbia restaurants, but getting intel on something in the Inner Harbor area is possible too. There is a pretty decent set of cafes cheek by jowl in Columbia-Mongol/Chinese/Japanese (really) that are next door to one another.

Would meeting about a half hour before going into a restaurant be acceptable? Given travel vagaries you would want the meet window to be broad.

How many people ar we talking about here, ten? Five?

Oh, I just meant we could hang out at somebody's house and make dumplings--that's kind of a nice party thing. I'd volunteer our place (just inside the Beltway) but it's a wreck right now 'cause we just moved in. So unless anyone else has a house they don't mind us tramping around in, I guess a restaurant would be the best way to go.

Doesn't have to be Chinese, though. They could just serve protein cake. ;)

So where's a good Baltimore Chinese restaurant? I know some in Rockville, MD but I'm not familiar with the Baltimore Chinese scene.

I'd recommend we find a hot pot place, but my husband'd kill me.

I had fresh bao last night! A professional made it, but I've been taught and have bought some bao zi cookbooks, if you all want to come to our place and make some for a future shindig. We can all dress like Saffron.

Hi! I'm another MD Browncoat who's been lurking on this thread and I've lived in Columbia for a long, long time. There are quite a few Chinese and Asian restaurants in the area. Most of them are decent (although I'd have to agree that if you want great Chinese food, you have to go to Montgomery County.) The Mongolian Grill in Columbia has a really decent sized dining room that could easily handle a group of 15 or 20. If you've never had Mongolian, it's pretty neat. You get to pick your meat, veggies, and seasonings and put them in a bowl and then some guy with a big knife throws it on a super hot grill, cooks it, and gives it back to you.

Anyway, I'd love to attend a shindig lunch anywhere in MD. My name is Susan although I'm not the same Susan mentioned above. Keep this thread alive!

Right now I am blank on the topic of decent chniese places in the Inner Harbor area.

here is a web search hit or three that are places I know are in the Inner Harbor. I cannot speak to the quality of their cuisine, but we could always bail if everyone thinks they are terrible. It is not like there aren't four grillion restaurants around there.

The third one is fancy and could be pricey, it is also a bit of a walk up Charles Street.

Hong Kong Express
410-576-9660
The Gallery At Harborplace , Baltimore , MD

Thai Noodle Bowl
410-547-1772
Harborplace , Baltimore , MD

Tony Cheng's Szechuan Restaurant
410-539-6666
801 N Charles Street , Baltimore , MD

BTW if any of the Browncoats that are local to the Burtonsville/Columbia area want to do something informal before then, email me. I think the kitchen cooking thing is a great idea, I would just like to meet folks before I invite them into my residence, no offense meant.

Troopies *drool* huh? wha? Yeah, I had a good seat for the masquerade, on the floor right up near the base of the stage. (Because I was a runner).
