What do you suppose a Secondary(or Primary for that matter) Grav Boot does? You know, the part of Serenity's engine that Vester thought was broken in Out of Gas.

In 'The Message' Kaylee refers to a Gravity Drive.

Somewhere else there is a reference to grav thrust. I think grav is the standard technobabble applied to Serenity's propulsion system.

If I am thinking right, a boot in industry is something that mates up or provides the mating surface between two pieces of gear.

So... secondary drive boot is probably an interface between the power system and the gravitic drive system. The backup one, not the primary one that is used all the time.

LOL!

I just knew someone would try and explain this fictional engine component for me.

I reckon its just some sort of sheilding(boot) over the secondary gravimetric interferometer synchronizers. Duh!

I'm reading the transcript online ... perhaps the writers forgot they were writing about the Secondary Grav Boot ... Bester calls it a SGB .. Kaylee just calls the item a Grav Boot ... simple ... then again see my end comment ...

This is the conversation about the part:

BESTER
No can do, Cap. Secondary grav boot's shot.

KAYLEE (O.S.)
No it ain't.

Kaylee pops up, getting dressed. The men look at her.

KAYLEE
Ain't nothing wrong with your grav boot. Grav boot's just fine.
(to Mal)
Hello.

She drops down again, out of view. Mal glances at Bester. Bester's a bit flustered.

BESTER
(to Mal)
She doesn't... that's not what...
(to Kaylee)
No it ain't!
KAYLEE
(reappearing)
Sure it is. Grav boot ain't your trouble. I seen the trouble plain as day when I was down there on my back before. Your reg couple's bad.

(I agree with Drakon ... the SGB is probably the backup part of the system .. at least that has a backup *L*)

Well, somehow they got gravity on the ship while in space. Maybe the "secondary grav" part refers to the part that applies that gravity. It'd be pretty important if you think about all the g-forces it saves them from. Maybe the "boot" part is where it connects and diverts power from the "Primary Grave drive" or something like that.
