I was thinking it would be great if people could tell some of the stories about when they first began to realize that they had just become firefly fans/browncoats some call this process an apifiny(sp)

SISTER

Hello Brent; for me it started when the movie, Serenity, played on HBO. I loved it...and learned later that it was based on a television show that had been canceled. My husband got me the complete DVD set and both of us watched them (in the CORRECT order) and fell in love. I then spent about two months 'mourning' the loss of a show I never knew existed!! Go figure. Joined here and at Whedonesque and just keep hoping that somehow, somewhere, someone (with the power and the coin) will bring back this marvelous program....that's my story.

I'm kind of like Sister in the fact that I never knew the show existed. A friend of my dad's recommended Serenity to him, and we saw it, loved it, and then forgot about it since neither of us knew about the show. Then, I was on YouTube and I saw this video of the crew and I thought that it looked kinda familiar and I clicked on it and saw that it was Firefly and I found out that there was the show. I watched a few episodes on YouTube and then I went and bought the DVDs. And here I am now.

Girls are bonkers, boys are crazy, and there's only a few sane people in this world.

I watched FF when it was on ,but then lost track of it. I knew Nathan from his soap opres days ,and have always had a crush on him.So when Serenity came out I bought it.Then I bought the series. While watching the pilot I found myself in love..I can remember the exact minute too ..it was Mal,Zoe and Jayne on horses running from the reavers towards the ship ..

Love then turned to obsession rather quickly .

GUYWHOWANTSAFIREFLYOFHISOWN

I was visiting some family in another state, and a cousin ask me if I wanted to watch something cool, I said yes, and by "And we will call it.... This Land." I knew it was a great show, it wasn't until I found myself playing out the part of the pilot where they pull the crazy ivan with my legos that I truly realized I was hooked (oddly enough the week after my cousins introduced me SciFi channel started airing it weekly)

Why is the rum always gone?

I work for a company that does Movie Theatre Software, so I like to keep track of what movies are being released so that I can judge how busy the theatres will be. So I first heard of Serenity a few weeks before it opened and found out that there had been a TV show and there was a ‘cult’ following.
It all sounded somewhat interesting, so I decided to throw the first disc of the TV series, onto my NetFlix list. It probably started out as number 150.
It slowly climbed the list, and arrived at my house a year ago, but I was too busy to watch it. It even came on vacation with me (in case I had an evening free). Finally one Sunday night I decided to put it in the DVD player and see what this was all about.
I was hooked immediately, and within 3 weeks had seen the entire box set as well as Serenity. I purchased both last June.

DONCOAT

Like LA29, I watched it from Day 1 on Fox (may they go to the special hell, with a pass to purgatory for getting the show made at all).

I enjoyed lots of things about the first episode (The Train Job), and before it was over I was already disposed to tune in every week from then on.

Then Mal kicked Crow through the engine. I came out of my chair yelling out loud. The hook was set, and I've been a 'coat ever since.

I'm pointin' right at it!

I knew about this show when it came out but i thought it was horseshit because i was 10 years old and thought that it was a crappy scifi cuz it didnt have lasers and lightsabers. but then when SciFi put the episodes on for Serenity's release, i watched Aerials and Trash. I liked them but i was still too into Star Wars. Then two months ago i got a bunch of Breaking Benjamin songs from my friend. So I listened to them all but one, and that one song was Firefly, it was still in my music folder and i forgot to drag it out. So I listened to it and it triggered those memories of how much i liked the show(two episodes, but w/e i loved them both), so then i started watch some on the internet but they werent in order so I bought the set and the rest is history.

Also, in "Firefly" by Breaking Benjamin, this one line hit the hardest and reminds me of the show so very much: "And I'm dying to win
'cause I'm born to lose"

IREMIST

I was on a mission to clean the house top to bottom early fall '06 and I like to just leave the TV on so I started clicking and I think the first scene to catch my eye involved Kaylee talking to Jayne and I thought "wait, there's a girl in a mechanic's jumpsuit talking to a guy named JAYNE????, something intereseting is afoot"
And I stayed and watched Shindig, and well, let's just say the house didn't get cleaned that day! My hubby found the series at the new video rental place down the street, then I had to buy them(and I don't buy dvd's,I rent anything I want for a dollar) now the disease has progressed to making bumper stickers and harassing family members and drinking tea and rewatching them on weekends....Help me, Joss!!!

im not sure when my exact moment was, I like many was a late bloomer when it was on fox I bairly knew it existed, a show about cowboys in space, it sounded as lame as so many other shows being peddled at the time. im not even sure I actually cought a full episode.

it was later when scifi showed the firefly marathon before serenity was released, I watch alot of scifi and I had a clear day so I grabed some snacks and drinks sat back.
by the end of the marathon something was... different. an odd sensation... many emotions...
still in shock absorbing what I saw.. it took a little while for what I just saw to soften and penetrate years of lame one dimention shows and shows about special effects instead great story telling.
Then a few days later this subtle infection/transformation hit me like lightning and WOW!
from then on Ive been a browncoat ive learned alot about the plight of firefly and the steel like resolve of joss wheton and the actors and actresses (something you dont see) usually when a show is canceled people move on.
not so with firefly that little ember just would NOT die out (oh god how they tried!) in the face of overwhelming odds firefly defies the normal laws of hollywood and its now 5 years after the single season series was canceled and its more popular now than ever!
I also purchassed the movie and the firefly DVD set and recently the companion book
I routinly inject firefly/serenity into every place I can im even on an NBC study group that i do surveys about TV I told them firefly "is" my #1 show
my life was made a little better by having been apart of joss's creation.

When you cant run your walk
when you cant walk you crawl
when you cant crawl your fans will carry you
thank you joss and the crew of firefly
