CNN.COM headlines it this way:

Bush: If you don't like my Iraq plan, tell me yours.

Not sure if that was reallly his attitude, sounds pretty belligerent, might be left-wing, pro-terrorist, defeatist, mainstream media bias.

So here's 2 other options.

1. Institute a limited draft. Sunset it after 2 years. Every 19 year old male reports on his 19th birthday, every one. Exemptions only for being in prison, being so mentally or physically handicapped that service is impossible, or being terminally ill, or already being on active duty in another military service. Delay for anyone in an ROTC program who accepts a contract for a 4 year term later.
Everybody serves 18 months-- 2 months Basic Training, 2 months Advanced Infantry School, then on the plane to Baghdad. I think the Army can figure out something for them to do while they're there. Everybody serves 365 days in Iraq, then home, then 2 mo. demobilization, then discharged. Last new draftee is taken in exactly 2 years after startup date. Program cannot be extended, cannot be applied to anywhere except Irag.
War in Iraq over after 4 years, Period, progress or no.

or:

2. Pull up the tent stakes, form rear guards, load the planes at Baghdad International and out as fast as possible, not 4-6 months or 10 months or 18 months, but 30 days.

oh,I fergot this part of option 1.

Pay 'em ZIP. Give 'em uniforms, guns and ammo, food and shelter, actual stuff to fight with. Work 'em all 7 days a week, no holidays, no leave time. Maximize their effort.

i heard this one on talk radio (i forget who) and im kinda partial to it. the bulk of our combat forces should be running border patrol and crowd control. insert special ops into iraqi units and have them advise the iraqis in combat. we can cut the flow of foreigners and they can learn how to fight.

Wash> but thats like science fiction
Zoe> you live on a spaceship, dear

unless of course you're avoiding RWED for a reason (which I can understand).

And, as far as your plan goes, it doesn't sound bad. The way Bush phrased it - "The challenge playing out across the broader Middle East is more than a military conflict. It is the decisive ideological struggle of our time." - seems to indicate to me that this is pretty important, so running a limited draft like you suggest would be putting his money where his mouth his.

Unfortunately, your second plan would probably encounter resistance from both the left and the right. "We helped start it, we have to help end it" might be a response from the left (or from people like me); "we only lose when we retreat" and "what will the rest of the world think of us" could be arguments from the right.

Granted, the situation in the Middle East is something of a catastrofk. I just wish Bush would actually listen to his generals, and back up his speeches with approapriate actions (in that they match the level of severity that either he or his advisors suggest).

I had a piece of the action on the Surge or Surrender thread, until it degenerated into " Is opposing the President treason, or not?" Altho' this thread is related, I thought of it more in relation to reaction to the Prez' weekly speeech, reported today.

Ah, yes, that one post. I tend to forget about things like that when Rue and crew start up. It's much safer here...
