end of this school year Ill be moving off with my family to Philidalphia Pennsylvania. I have no choice in the matter, so Ill be leaving every thing behind n old elkhart Indiana...

I was just wondering if any here is from Phili so I know what to expect around there,
political beleifs of the general populas?
generall.... life quality ish
weather?
you know, that sorta stuff. Just gettin prepared.

Yeah there's a few round here but the concentration appear to be a bit south of here down by baltimore. Don't worry about this place, its great, about midway between NYC and DC and within 1/2 day of Boston and Carolina Lots and lots to see and do either here or nearby.

Political: middle of the road, state is mostly republican but more liberal than the rest of the country except NY or CA meaning don't tax us if you can cut something useless first but we may still like you anyway. The further from Philly, Harrisburg and Pittsburg you get the more conservative it gets.

General QOL: welcome to the Northeast, the orginal 13 colonies and the oldest buildings on the continent. A lot of suburbs are filling up round here, soon they'll have reached their max and we'll sprawl out towards quaker country in Lancaster county. It's a good mix in all seasons, summer and winter can have their extremes but the spring and fall are priceless both for the weather and the scenery, but you're giving up tornado warnings for hurricane warnings, at least 3-4 every year.

Its a Nice place, I've been here for the last 24 years since also moving from Indiana, but I was up near Lafayette.

Hi, Arc;

Yah, pretty much nailed by QUINO. Been here for about three years m'self (from NYC), and grown unexpectedly fond of it (though I'll always think of myself as an expatriate New Yorker...but that's just me).

There are good things to be had here. The Art Museum is top shelf, the music scene is thriving, Fairmount Park is lovely (makes Central Park look like a suburban playground). All in all Philly is a cool place...though such forced relocations are difficult no matter how nice the destination! Sympathies.

And it will be nice to have another Browncoat around. Do post a message when you set up shop. We'll make sure you feel welcome (as you will be!).

Wow, thanks for the info.
I didnt know about any of the parks around there, I was really turned off by all the closely puut buildings there but at least theres a grand ol park!
next year being high school for me, how are the schools around there?

Lots of variability in the school situation, from might-as-well-already-be-in-college to be-sure-to-pack-your-kevlar-vest (as, I suppose it would be with any city). The answer to your question would depend on where you were moving. Are you moving into Philly proper, or one of the suburbs? Obviously, you should NOT post an address (duh!), but a general sense of where in the Philly area you will be colonizing would help me/us give you some pointers. Actually, there is a site my wife was checking with respect to school districts, their strengths and weaknesses, when we started looking for houses (in the event of breeding, ya know). As soon as I can track that down, I'll post the link (I'd ask her now, but she's snoring a few meters away, and I might be injured); it should prove helpful for you and your family to gauge the merits of your future school.

As for the buildings being close together...well..since I, as previously noted, had grown accustomed to NYC, Philly has seemed rather sparse by comparison. Still, you get used to it, and may even come to relish the sight of the skyline. You'd be surprised at the things to which people can adapt, and even come to embrace, in time.

And, yes, Fairmount Park is a Grand Old Park to be sure. There are sections where you can forget that you're in the heart of a city, and fancy yourself in the middle of some forest (we often take the dog swimming out there; it's most idyllic).

And there are some really excellent theaters for seeing the Firefly Movie!!

Here's a site that gives info on schools and districts in PA. It should enable you to zero in on the school you're likely to attend, as long as you know the area:

I didn't get to peruse it in detail, but it seemed to have the broad strokes of what you'd need to know, going in. Lemme know if it's altogether unhelpful, and I'll see if I can scare anything else up.

I consult at an alternative high school in Northeast Philly, and would be glad to put in a good word for you...if you get kicked out of a couple of other schools, have significant drug issues, or a history of violence!

Man, you guys make Philly sound so bad! ha ha! I grew up in Upper Darby spitting distance from the Philly line. It wasn't always the greatest area, but where is these days? I was perfectly happy with the mix of suburbs and "exciting" city things to do. Email me if you have any questions about the stuff to do in Philly proper or the surrounding sub's.
