Brust is one of my very favorite writers, one of the few whose new books I always buy, in hardcover. His Vlad Taltos books are not a lot like Firefly, but it's easy to like both; both feature antiheroes, action, and a dash of humor. "The Book of Jhereg" is a good place to start:

Brust has written a Firefly novel -- just because he wanted to -- which very likely will never be published.
