Yep, it's that time again. New thread madness, all old posts must be sold, no matter how low the offer. See our collection of posts for sale over at http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=26700

As mentioned in the pub, I went to a friend's engagement party today and got somewhat burnt. Curse my pasty northern heritage and its inability to withstand direct sunlight.

I think that it depends on what kind of situation it is. If it's only dangerous if you make a certain decision or something then yeah, you can be safe. But if it's a situation like...your house exploding or something, then no it's not really possible.

Oh, and also, this:

I refuse to hug the water cooler after all that.

::waves to all but the nasty peoples::

Nico - The sun is why I never really go outside. Sunscreen feels icky (and I'd have to wear it a lot), and my skin can burn under my clothes - or, my favorite, in the shade - in less than an hour.

::hands Nico some aloe vera and calamine lotion::

I even remember three days where I basically laid around in sheets on the floor because my blistered skin hurt so bad.

Ouch, that sounds bad. There was a time when a silly young lass (myself) went rock climbing in the Sierra Nevadas, and seeing as how she was from western Washington, she believed her tendency to tan rather than burn also applied to the Californian mountains. Oh, this lass didn't put nearly enough sunscreen on. A week later, her arms looked like light brown and purple paper.
(They really did, I was peeling THAT MUCH - I swear to God I must have made crackling sounds).

13 my darling and beloved 13 HUGS

Hi Dug and welcome Shameless:)

WARNING : Extremely long rant to follow
Well the saga of the week from hell continues. SO brother in law got delayed and didn't arrive until 11pm. After helping put two kids to bed we then went upstairs and husband and brother in law wanted a chat ( which lasted til 1 am) We figured the kids would sleep late so I decided to try and sleep in ...curses foiled again when our cats ( who were penned upstairs so as to avoid nephew who is allergic) went nuts at 6 am. I got up and such ( which was good 'cause it turned out the kids woke at 7 am) Then we went to breakfast, drove to the museum of life toured the dino and interactive exhibits ( this consisted of the kids darting and racing from exhibit to exhibit with me keeping up with them and brother in law and husband following at a leisurely pace behind us) for 4 hours. Then we went to the model train show which was packed with kids and the boys darted around and we split up to manage them( me taking one boy and them taking one boy). Then on to my parents for a chance to play with the horses. This brings us to 2 pm and lunch. This being over with ,I got to take the kids home and play with them/ watch spongebob for 2 hours while husband and brother in law went to the car wash and looked for dvds together. They( husband and BIL) just got home and I sent them into the living room to set up electronic battleship with the boys so I could have a few minutes here. After that I shall make and clean up dinner and wrangle the boys ( with some help from the guys on the wrangling) and then we shall watch a movie and put the boys to bed and likely stay up so husband and BIL can get some visiting in ( as we have a small house there's no way I can go to bed without being able to hear them since they have to be upstairs to keep from waking the boys) so likely no sleep tonight either. Then tomorrow it's up early to make breakfast and pack lunches and get the boys ready, packed and off so I can finish 4 loads of laundry and do all household chores before my workday starts the next day... This is why I strongly suggest those of you considering marriage try and find someone who has NO living relatives!!! The boys really are cute and all. I am just about to drop from the strain of the week and then the exhaustion and whirl of the weekend. So I'm kind of losing it:(
RANT ENDS:)
Well this too shall pass and it'll all work out in the end. Hope you guys are all having a good weekend Must go search for videos for the boys and get started on dinner.

Holy cow, sounds like you have a busy weekend!

Reminds me of the times my roommates family would visit her. We lived in a smallish 2 bedroom apartment maybe 850 sq/ft. Her mom and dad and her brother and his wife would usually all come down to visit every few months. Her family is not like my family, when they enter a room they take it over!! I am usually confined to my 10x12 foot bedroom because there is nowhere else to go to escape the onrush.

Good Luck

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I have very pale skin that has only gotten paler as I see less and less sunlight. When I used to go out in the sun, I would use the intensive water-proof sunscreens and I would still turn bright pink. Once I ended up out in the sun for hours without having planned it, and I looked like a boiled lobster. I was so burned I felt a little sick. I did not blister or peel very badly, because the instant I got home I stood in the tub and poured aloe vera juice (it can be bought at any health food store and kept in the refrigerator and feels soooooo good because it's cold and it's pure) all over my burns, then continued to soak small towels in it and apply them to my skin, particularly my back and shoulders, for the rest of the day. Next day I moved on to the gel until the burn faded. Never doing something like that again.
Of course now I work graveyard. Not much sun on the graveyard schedule.
MsG, may I offer you a hammer?
My mom always makes sure that anyone coming to visit us is going to stay in a hotel unless they tell her exactly who will be here and for how long. I think the only houseguests we've had lately are my aunt and adorable cousin. When we didn't have a house, we didn't have houseguests. We just didn't have the space for it.

PR- your mom has always struck me as a sensible woman and now I think she's a genius!! Thanks for the hammer though, I may need it. It just took me 30 minutes to find something to cook that the boys would eat ( they don't like mac and cheese, sloppy, joes, pizza, chinese food, steaks, fried chicken, or hot dogs and they had burgers for lunch so they don't want those again. Luckily I have the stuff for spaghetti. Just hope I can find some side dishes they'll eat. Wish me luck:)

Yikes! Kids that don't like "mac and cheese, sloppy, joes, pizza, chinese food, steaks, fried chicken, or hot dogs." What's wrong with those kids? You've got all my positive thoughts heading your way, MsG.

PR, I'm like you. I burn in minutes. I have so many terrible burn stories from my youth that I avoid the sun when ever I can.

Waves to everyone else.

I don't think I'll be hugging the Water Cooler today? Actually, I think I'll stay over here on the other side of the room for awhile.

In a way, I actually kind of envy you, MsG - at least your relatives are considerate enough to visit you. All of our relatives stay put where they are (two states away in different directions), and they only visit when they're already doing something for work (or, once, my grandma stayed for a while after my sister - who is younger than I am - was born). In fact, I don't think our family has ever been on a vacation that didn't consist of visiting the relatives.

But, then again, I guess they get their just desserts, as it is - we do most of the stuff they're doing to you. Except, I think we're nicer about it (mostly because we're all older).

And, I'm with VE - those kids are warped! I bet they don't like cartoons, or snow, or puppies, either.

Wha--?? What sort of child doesn't like any of these things?!?

My pasty white skin also burns at the sight of sun. However, I discovered an odd phenomenon in Hawaii - without sunscreen, out in the sun all day wearing very little (heh), and even with suntan lotion, I could not get any colour in my skin. Nothing. No burn, no tan, zilch. Very, very odd for me. I say we all go there now and experiment some more with that.

Relatives? Well, there's five of us left now, and three of us live in the same house, so we see each other pretty often. It gets to be a strain (for people other than me) driving back and forth so much.

W'huh? That's a great reason! Maybe you could just rephrase it: "I need to assist in a scientific clinical study pertaining to cutaneous medical research, which I am hopeful will culminate in a safe and efficacious increase in the quality of life for a large portion of the population. And, um, to, like, catch some totally righteous waves, dude."

If you say that really quickly, and leave off the last sentence, it could almost sound impressive.

Just a thought. As you can see, I have not given up on my "Run away with me!" idea.

mornin' Imponderables (whomever is awake).

Wisconsin was awesome. I walked on a frozen lake, got within 10 yards of a dozen deer during a walk in the woods, had many microbrews, lots of snuggling, and ate the best gyro I have ever had in my life. I even heard someone call a water fountain a bubbler . More details to come, possibly in the form of a blog.

MsG - have 2 chocolate martinis and a full body massage and call me in the morning. Jehshus, sounds like your week is approaching the level of my month.

Pasty-white Irishman here, and me and the Daystar don't mix well. I tend to go from white to red and back again, no real tan ever sticks.

to be fair, the germans did rather have the final word in that particular matter, we just kept them out and let them be, the germans went positively dark-age on their roman arses...

Hey I found an excellent sunscreen for all of us that are pigmentally challenged...it's called a roof:) Or you could always check out those baby safety catalogs they have a charming hazmat suit looking thingy for babies to wear to the beach to avoid burns (and insure all other children avoid them) It comes complete with helmet with sun visor protectant..seriously it's insane. My sis and sis in law get these catalogs and we all sit around laughing at the extreme measure some parents go to to keep their kids safe ( and looking like the nerdiest mutants on earth)

Well the weekend finished on Sunday with the kids launching out of bed at 7 am and running upstairs yelling wildly for us. We got up fed, dressed and played with them for almost 3 hours before their dad bothered to get out of bed. Then engaged in some more whiney, bratty behavior before leaving at noon shrieking because their dad ( who had promised to take them to the zoo on Sunday) was no longer taking them to the zoo when he found out husband and I had stuff to do and wouldn't be going with to " help out" ( actual translation take his kids around the zoo and deal with them so he could enjoy it) As the door closes husband looks at me and says " we are never having kids" and I think he mostly meant it. So I am borrowing my tutoring kids ( who are very well behaved and great fun) and taking them ( with husband ) to do an activity so he can see that it's how they're raised and not kids themselves that are the problem.

Sorry for the long post but as I have 3 parent meetings as well as teaching all day I may not be on much

HUGS to all:)

BY ALL MEANS!! Let nothing interfere, impede or otherwise impair the baby-making! It must continue for the betterment of humanity!

So, MsG, did you get my email of "encouragement"? I hope it "helped". See? There's always someone worse off than you.

so few people can claim any kind of 'pure' nationality these days that ethnic jokes are getting bloody difficult to put together >.< gonna have to start making ethnic jokes at the expense of people who make ethnic jokes soon, and then it'll all get terribly confusing
