Jonny- HUGS oh thank you for sending an email to me HUGS. unfortunately I didn't have a spare moment all weekend and my school won't allow access to yahoo mail :( But I will read it when I get home:)

So how did everyone else's weekend go? Anything fun or exciting? Are we all remembering to say a quick prayer/spell/ whatever for poor Magda trapped at her non internet parents? How goes the search party for Tristan?

Morning to all the pasty whites on this thread! My dad must've had some sort of tann-y genes, even though he was half lowlander scottish. Don't really know the other half, but the tanning must come from that side. I tan...and do it well. I've been so dark before that you could see my tan lines through white shirts. That was a little overboard, but as a California girl, it is pretty typical.

MSG: you deserve sainthood. I would've had huge issues with both BIL and hubby. MrG, if you're listening...MSG ISN'T the baby monitor. It is NOT her responsibility to run after them, feed them, keep them entertained, etc. while you and your brother enjoy a leisurely walk through the museum or sit and catch up. She is not their mother and you shouldn't allow your brother to treat her as such.

A big and mighty GRRRRRR to all parents who suddenly stop parenting when another person shows up.

Ah...that felt good. (And yes, I do have issues with that. I can't stand it when my friends do that to me. Yes, I'm good with kids, and yes, I like their's but no, I do not want to take care of them for you when I didn't expressly agree to it. If I wanted to be saddled with children, I would have some of my own.

MSG: Sorry you had a crazy busy weekend.

I, on the other hand, had a near perfect weekend. Got to ride 5 times in the space of two days (usual count is 2), one of them on a big cross-country course. I actually took down most of the Xmas decorations (yes, I know...I'm sad a pitiful, but I just haven't had the time. And b/c I used a fake tree, I don't have the "firebomb" of a dead tree to force the issue) and managed to do loads and loads of laundry. I feel all productive.

Rugbug- I love those weekends where you feel all mighty 'cause you've accomplished a bunch of stuff you've been meaning to get to for a while:)

MisterG was pretty good about helping :) Though I can see you've been in the same boat. Not that you don't love kids, just not fair to be the babysitter for everyone else:)

I do believe he is flummoxed.

I just got out of a big "Come to Jesus" meeting with the sales staff, GM, & VP of buying. I was getting sick of incomplete orders, poorly written orders, etc. Basically told them I would be returning ALL incomplete orders unprocessed (which in turn delays when the salesperson gets paid) so hopefully impacting them in the pocket will work.

Ah look, I've flummoxed JQ. Probably not in a good way, though. I was WAY too tan. I could've joined the circus.

NVG: See, she's just trying to keep her little talons dug into you. She can tell her grasp is slipping, so she's making some effort to keep you entrapped.

Gosh, why do I always sound so bitter and cynical. I'm not really. Well, cynical, yes. Bitter, nope.

Mav: Good job hitting the salespeople where it counts. It's usually the only way to keep them in-line.

Oh, and back to Hell's Kittens ponderable: Safety in Danger. I think it is possible to have a measure of safety in dangerous situations. You can use the best equipment, be the best trained, have the most knowledge, etc and you will reduce the danger of a situation. You can't reduce it to nothing, but you can make it much, much safer.

For example: Climbing Mt. Everest. That used to be a feat for only the most experienced mountain climbers. Well, technological advances in weather tracking, climbing techniques and gear have made it so people who have no business being on that mountain can summit. The level of safety for the experienced climber is rather high, while that same level of safety has allowed inferior climbers to put themselves into more danger because they never would've attempted to climb the mountain without the proper experience.

So safe? No. Safer? Yes. But it's a knife that cuts both ways.

Rugbug,

I saw the most amazing series on cable (Discovery channel?) about a group of men ascending Everest and they talked about this exact same thing - that there were people on the mountain who had no business being there, but due to good equipment thought they could.

Several of those ill prepared hikers died.

Ok, I just got called "Order Nazi." I know they meant it jokingly...

I saw all but the final episode of that show. Grrrr. I only found out who summitted, etc, but going to the Discovery website. Apparently, there was all kinds of controversy surrounding Russell Brice, the expdition leader, and the actions of his team (walking by the dying guy, taking down ropes, etc). It was the deadliest year on Everest since 1996 (the year chronicled by Jon Krakauer in "Into Thin Air" and the Everest I-Max movie. Link to good article here: http://outside.away.com/outside/destinations/199609/199609_into_thin_a
ir_1.html
).

Speaking of cheerleaders, at the gym on Friday the "Question of the day" was 'What movie are you embarrassed to admit you like?' One of the MALE PTs answered "Bring It On." Heh. He was embarrassed because it should be a chick flick. But it gains some "male" legitimacy because of the cheerleaders and all.

And yes, they discuss spankies.

My answer: 'Drop Dead Fred.'

ASOFT: good luck on the exams.

omg I hereby declare tribal council and I vote for nicodemus to be kicked off the island. How are we ever supposed to find this thread anymore? No "imponderables", no link to the new one in the old thread. Where's Tristan and his warm and familiar format?

Oh and my ponderable: How do you get depressed people to be less depressed? So, my Dad's a loser. I don't know if I've mentioned that before as it's semi-embarrassing. Anyway he's finally getting kicked out of his apartment (which is great so me and my brother can stop sending him rent checks). Anyway every week is long depressing phone calls about how sad he is to move and how he remembers the days when me and my brother would come to visit. Yeah yeah...I don't care. Throw our kids stuff out already. I didn't realize you were still holding onto it all this time anyway you sentimental fool. Granted I mainly say "yeah it'll be ok" and stuff like that. Still how do I get this problem to go away? All in all he should count his friggin blessings that he somehow has a rich friend who's going to let him stay rent free at his gianormous mansiony place and try to get him a better job. That's way better than other people have had it.

Possibly that was more complaining than impondering cause I really don't know what advice could fix this one. But I'm open to suggestions.

Oh, Zeek, we took the Imponderables out because there didn't seem to be a whole lot of male and female ponderings, and more general questions and how our days were.

Note that this post by YinYang was directly after your post on the old thread asking the exact same question

So you just need to find a title that mentions water coolers, rather than imponderables.

As for linking the threads together, it does exist, as demonstrated in the second-last post of the previous thread:

Well, calling him a loser might not help.

Maybe he needs someone to talk to; maybe it's a chemical imbalance. Maybe he needs to be (lovingly but forcefully) forced to do something - apply for a job, or something. Maybe he senses that you're not interested in what he has to say, or what his problems are. Maybe there's something going on you don't know about. It depends on how long he's been depressed, and the way in which he is depressed (duh).

I can't really offer any advice to help him, other than to remind you that his feelings, no matter what his problems, are legitimate, and that you should be supportive in helping him. Because, chances are, he really doesn't like where he's at, either, and doesn't know what to do (not that I'm speaking from experience or anything <.< >.>).

Thanks for all the Scottish love, folks. ~ 90% of me really appreciates you.

Yeah see the I get to the "what do I care" point and things just go downhill from there. I tend to not be a very forgiving person. He got himself where he is and he's got more than the means to get himself out. He just won't do it. He likes to day dream about hitting it big and so he never wants to take a regular job like a normal person and make a steady paycheck. Nope he deserves more and one of these days his ship will come in (his mind). Yeah no you don't and no it won't. Get a regular job and live a normal life. Of course it's the world's fault and not his that he hasn't hit it big. #$%&(* I could go on for a while like this.

What you've described really doesn't sound like "depression," in a clinical sense. Sounds more like... I dunno... lazy person who doesn't want to take responsibility for themselves, seeking the boo-hoo-woe-is-me sympathy so he can get things out of the people around him. Sounds like my uncle. Heh.

At any rate, from my experience (for whatever it's worth), you can't fix him. You can either (1) be brutally honest with him or (2) play the passive-aggressive role by completely failing to answer his phone calls.

Meh. What do I know.

Can I just say that I much prefer the water cooler, as I got really tired of trying to actually ponder and never getting any pondering done. So tired of it that I left the imponderables and am happy to be here, at its successor, the water cooler.
There was ample switch-over time. There were three imponderables thread with water cooler themed titles before it went pure water cooler. Then there was the thread called "It's just a water cooler. get used to it". Was pretty clear to me.
Also, if my qing ren goes, I go (and most especially if HK goes too! )

Just popping by to say hello... should be in bed, but eh, what does bed know?

MsG, i second the nomination for your sainthood. Or I create a new motion in which you stand up for yourself and kick some brother-in-law butt. Either one.

Well, 1 day of hell week down, 4 to go. Not swamped with homework so far, and i'm about to get near 6 hours of sleep, that's pretty good.

See you next time, whitefall has just enetered DAILY POST MODE!!!

At any rate, from my experience (for whatever it's worth), you can't fix him. You can either (1) be brutally honest with him or (2) play the passive-aggressive role by completely failing to answer his phone calls.

Meh. What do I know.

Yeah I don't think it's clinical depression. Just situational feeling down and depressed mode. See I'd like to be brutally honest. I'd like to just say you deserve this and you've been an idiot and your two sons are more successfull than you and you're pathetic. The problem is what if he just goes and kills himself or something. Then I might feel bad. Plus my brother might hate me forever. So, I tend to avoid that brutal honesty option. Speaking of which this makes a good transition to...

I'm exactly the opposite. The pondering was the point. All the "morning" "morning HUGS!" "Hi how is your day?" "My day is fluffy how is yours?" "My day is more purplish today" stuff is just filler posts that make the meat of the imponderables harder to find. Seems like that stuff fits in the "39th floor whatevery" thread to me. Or maybe we need two spinoff threads. "The greetings and water cooler" thread and a "Discussions" thread.

TRISTAN

Howdy, all.
Just popping in to say hello. Life, work, and the 76th have taken over all of my time, and since the change to the Water Cooler, I have had little desire to be here. No offense, it's a great idea, I was all for it, etc., etc....but it is not something I feel like hanging around in anymore. I'll still post here and there on FFF and will probably check this out every now and then, but it's just not "home" anymore.

So, hugs and kisses to all, and hopefully I'll run into you elsewhere!

aaaaaaaaaaaaah Tristan HUGS that's awful. We never meant to make this feel less homey for you. We could put up a pondering sign right next to the water cooler if that helps HUGS. We understand the 76th is time consuming, but we miss you sweety.

Zeek sweety if it helps we can put a little something in for you too:)

So since we're almost at 100 posts anyway and in celebration of the return of Tristan and Zeek I shall begin a new thread :)
