How long has Jayne been aboard?

Over in the timeline http://www.fireflyfans.net/referencelist.asp?s=timeline it says Jayne tried "to hijack the Serenity" (Inara: "It's just 'Serenity'") in 2516, the calendar year before the start of the series.

It wasn't just Jayne, it was the gang he was in, and were they trying to hijack the ship? Maybe, but from what I can see in that scene, it wasn't stated -- all I see them interested in is the offloaded cargo.

But aside from that: is there any canon evidence for Jayne's being on Serenity only since the preceding year? I had the feeling he'd been there longer.

However, the only constraint I know of from the show is that Stitch, his partner from "Jaynestown", was imprisoned for four years. Their job on Higgins's Moon must then have taken place no less than four years ago, and probably not more -- I can't imagine justice being particularly slow on that world. So evidently he wasn't with the gang in "Out of Gas" until sometime more recent than that.
