Hi all,

I know it's a bit early yet (ie. like most of us haven't seen the show yet) but I've put up a Firefly Purity Test for the series (more as a trial for development as the show progresses). I'd love to hear what you though of it!

The Firefly Purity Test is at:
http://www.sadgeezer.com/firefly/purity-test.htm

and the rest of the SadGeezers Guide to Firefly is at:

OK, I understand that you need to show ads, and I sort of understand that you have to have obnoxious popups. But a site that has ads in obnoxious popups and is plastered with "Contribute!" buttons is just pathetic.

Yeaaaaaaaa! I'm a.... "MANIC ACADEMIC FIREFLY FANATIC" I think that's good, only that whole psycho-analysis is mostly a load of crap. Well apart from the thing about me being a "hopeless case" and thinking that Firefly is better than sex... (joke!). But I reset the implication that: "People like you, but they think you're a bit of a Geek." HEY! I'll have you know that people think I way more than a "bit of a geek."

The site doesn't have obnoxious popups. You should get your facts right before accusing people!

The contribute button is aimed at those of us who download music and graphics from the site (to help pay for bandwidth charges). Sadgeezer.com avaerages 2000+ users per day currently accessing over 5000 web pages and nearly 10000 graphic, video and sound files.

The site states on all the Firefly pages that it's a not-for-profit review site for the cult TV sci fi community, but then, if you'd actually bothered to have a look, you'd have noticed that.

Hehe :) I myself am considered am professional Geek :) My appologies.

I guess I'll have to tweek the test a little. You should only be a Manic Academic if you are totally fanatical about the show. I guess we are all mildly fanatical about the show to be regular visitors to this site :) But still, the Purity Tests at sadgeezer.com are actually psychometric tests. Sure they're only intended as a bit of fun and not serious, but here's how the test is calculated:

If you are a manic Firefly fanatic, you will probably know all there is to know about the show (right down to Joss Whedons fave colour). Most people like this are perfectionists (it takes a lot of time, resource, and dedication to be THAT crazy about a show. Only 3-4% of people taking the test should actually be a Manic Academic fan.
The personality profile is based on the recognised Melancholy/perfectionist personality.

A Firefly SadGeezer is someone who knows a fair amount about the show but certainly not everything. We're just simply interested in it and enjoy talking about it to other fans. However, if we were to chat about the show to a barmaid that we were attempting to chat up, then she may call us 'sad' (hense the name of the site, 'sadgeezer.com'). The vast majority of people who would checkout websites dedicated to our fave show would be considered as SadGeezers (I know you're all sceptically raising your eyebrows at this, but it's actually considered complementary )
The SadGeezer personality is based on the standard playful/Sanguine personality profile.

A Firefly Twerp is anyone else who hasn't watched the show but had the gaul to attempt a Purity test.

I had a real hard time researching the questions which are particularly difficult because they, for the most part, have answers which are all correct but differentiated by personality. For instance the question;

Inara is a
a. A street girl
b. High class prostitute
c. An expensive hooker

is always going to return the right answer.... but:

Answer 'a' is the Twerp answer since although Inara is a paid concubine, she's hardly a street walker!

Answer 'b' is the manic answer since it's the one which most closely fits her description and

Answer 'c' is the slightly more playful SadGeezer answer.... its sort of correct but more to do with your attitude to the character.

Clearly from your results, I've still got a ways to go in finding the right questions and tweeking the profiles to suit. But thanks for your feedback so far, it's been really helpful

I've changed the test so that it's MUCH more difficult to be a Manic Academic Firefly Fanatic.

If anyone has any suggestions for better questions based on the criteria above, I'd love to hear them, otherwise, thanks for your effort

All right! I'm a MANIC ACADEMIC FARSCAPE FANATIC too! Does that mean if I win the Buffy quiz when it's put up that I get the Triple Crown?

:D

It's funny you should say that! I've written to The Jim Henson Company to ask for a couple of prizes to help encourage the visitors to get the answers correct. I'm hopeful that they'll send me a pair of Rygel's edible underpants as the prize for the Farscape Purity Test and I'm hoping Mutant Enemy Inc. will send me a flask of Spikes sinus fluid for the Buffy Purity Test - cool huh?!.

I'm not really expecting a reply, but I should say that Paul Donovan (producer) once actually sent me the penis shaped key from the 'Luvliner' episode of LEXX (Season 2) as a prize for a competition. I actually gave it away to a prizewinner! How sad is that!

Sorry Zicsoft but I guess you were right. I found out today that Adverwizard (the people who handle the banners on the site) started slipping in periodic pop-unders without telling me!

They've since been turned off.

A note should be made here that this is the single most inaccurate assessment of my personality across which I have ever come.

Another note should be made that it seriously underestimates my level of devotion to Firefly and Joss Whedon as a viewer and a fan.

As a bit of constructive criticism, I would hold off on personality assessments until you have a system on which to base them that's a bit more concrete and/or accurate than whatever you have going on now (which might possibly be monkeys picking words out of hats and stringing them together in a manner not unlike a collage shaped like a banana).

Anyway, I appreciate your efforts, but I wasn't feelin' it.

Welp! A full explanation of the way the test is calculated in a post above.

If you came out as the wrong profile, I'm perfectly willing to accept that the system needs tweeking/fixing. But if you want to give constructive criticism - BE CONSTRUCTIVE! How was it incorrect? What did you score? How could it be improved (optional )

A note should be made here that you should possibly have read the first post of the thread before answering.

Another note should be made that at the bottom of each profile it clearly states:
"It should be pointed out that these conclusions should only be taken seriously if they are correct!

I am genuinely keen to make the Firefly Purity Test something that is fun and just a bit accurate (you can't pigeon-hole everyone into one of three personalities). If you would like to help then simply tell me where I went wrong as the other posters have.

Actually, I graded between 45% and 70%, interestingly enough - a sadgeezer, in fact - which wasn't the problem, as how much of a fangirl or boy you are seems to be directly dependent upon how much more important you consider Firefly to be than any aspect of your real life. This is probably a pretty good measure of a hardcore fan of any TV show, so that's fine - my real life is hectic and busy and important to me, and I have no shame in that.

I know. I read it. I find your system to be flawed, hence my facetious implication that primates are doing your test writing. I was being constructive - I said that I think that if you're going have a personality assessment portion, that it should be based on more concrete criteria. But let me be clearer with a blow by blow analysis of your criteria and my results:

Quote:

From the Criteria for Calculation Post:
If you are a manic Firefly fanatic, you will probably know all there is to know about the show (right down to Joss Whedons fave colour). Most people like this are perfectionists (it takes a lot of time, resource, and dedication to be THAT crazy about a show. Only 3-4% of people taking the test should actually be a Manic Academic fan.
The personality profile is based on the recognised Melancholy/perfectionist personality.

A person's knowledge of Firefly and/or Joss Whedon (which are two separate issues) is not necessarily linked to a melancholy/perfectionist personality - neither of which I have, though I know that I answered all the 'factoid' questions correctly. It doesn't take all that much time, resource, or dedication to know about the details of a television show that you like, as the only time and dedication you need is the time and dedication it takes to use the resource of a)this website or b)the Internet in general. This criticism is related to your sadgeezer assessment in that a person can be lighthearted about the show and consider it a casual interest while still being interested enough to know a lot about it.

Quote:

I had a real hard time researching the questions which are particularly difficult because they, for the most part, have answers which are all correct but differentiated by personality. For instance the question;

Inara is a
a. A street girl
b. High class prostitute

Answer 'c' is the slightly more playful SadGeezer answer.... its sort of correct but more to do with your attitude to the character.

How can an question that is not designed to assess knowledge, but rather sense of humor, be used to determine how much a person knows about something? That doesn't make any sense. If the SadGeezer response gives a person a lower total point value, your criteria are not accomplishing the goal of assessing a person's knowledge. If the goal is to assess personality solely, than there should be no questions that test knowledge. Capice?

Now to the next part, with accuracies omitted in the interest of space:

From SadGeezer.com's Firefly Purity Test:
FIREFLY SAD GEEZER
PERSONALITY PROFILE.

You believe that depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

Nope.

Quote:

You have seen most of the Firefly episodes but you are a little embarrassed at not having seen them from the start. You blame your mother for this oversight.

Actually, I've seen all of them to date, ironically the first one. Additionally, I intend to see them all on their first run.

Quote:

A friend you fancy came round to visit you recently. They left immediately after you played an MPEG file of Firefly Episode One Trailer.

My social interactions with my friends don't really involve my computer or discussion of the details of my speculative fiction habits. I never offer, though sometimes they ask.

Quote:

You don't have good manners but you do have great reflexes.

I have good manners and my reflexes need work.

Quote:

You believe that dancing is a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire. You also believe that inbreeding can only be prevented by banning country music.

Incorrect on both counts.

Quote:

You are NOT as completely aware of the story as you like to think, and you regularly misinterpret the storyline. This happens subconsciously and, strangely, this contributes overall to your enjoyment of the show.

I'm not really sure how much more aware I could be, without torturing Joss Whedon or Tim Minear for information. As far as misinterpretation, I really don't think so.

Quote:

Unfortunately, because of this, you do not get on with other Sad Geezers whom you believe are FIREFLY TWERPS.

Nope.

Quote:

You believe that sex on television is only bad if you fall off! People like you a lot - but they wouldn't want to see you working with sub-atomic particles.

A: I'm honestly kind of resentful of the repeated implication that a person who'd get my results is some kind of oversexed nympho.

B: I'm honestly definitely resentful of the implication that a person who'd get my results is not that intelligent.

Quote:

Your partner and friends are pissed off at your continual references to each episode and none of them watch the show as a result. This really upsets you - after all, how can any serious friend NOT have seen Firefly?

I don't make references to things that I know the people to whom I'm speaking won't recognize. If my friends choose to watch Firefly, that's their choice. If they choose not to, that's also up to them. It has no impact whatsoever on how much I enjoy the show.

Quote:

Smiling is the second best thing you do with your lips.

Sad Geezers are terrific lovers.

Again, implicit of nymphomania - my sex drive is no more or less than the average person.

Quote:

You are modest.

Not really.

Quote:

A Firefly SadGeezer partner does not watch the show, is not interested in it, and even attempts to wind you up about it. Nevertheless, he/she will always be yours because you are so good in bed.

You are obviously attractive to members of the opposite sex who continually hound you with offers of friendship and love. You dismiss these because you always have a partner and because you are an all round 'good person', after all, why should you spread it around when you can lay it on thick?

More incorrect assertions of a sex obsession.

Quote:

although you enjoy talking about Firefly to people who don't want to listen, this is seen as a quirky and entertaining characteristic of your personality.

Nope.

A note should be made here that you should possibly have read the first post of the thread before answering.

Apparently you were only interested in hearing thoughts like "Wow, that was so right!" Or "Oh, gosh, that was so funny I almost died!" If you want people's thoughts, you should prepare yourself to hear ones that don't necessarily agree with yours.

Quote:

Another note should be made that at the bottom of each profile it clearly states:

Please refer to my previous statement. If you want to know what people think about your test, don't cop out by saying "It was all in fun! Don't take it seriously!" when they tell you.

Quote:

I respect your efforts and your goals, but being flippant and incorrect in your arguments are not the ways to garner the responses that you want. I personally found your test to do exactly what you seem to think it shouldn't - pigeon-holed me into a personality archetype that has nothing to do with who I actually am. I'm not offended by it, I'm not mad about it - I actually don't really care. But you asked for opinions, so I gave you mine. To come back and say that I haven't read the previous posts in the thread and treat my comments as though they were made thoughtlessly is both inaccurate and kind of annoying.

So I hope my comments are useful to you in 'tweaking' your test, and that in the future you won't assume that I'm just mad because I want to be the world's biggest fangirl.

Thanks,

Wouldn't it have been simpler to have said? "Sad, I think your upper level marking system is set too high." I came out as a Firefly SadGeezer and I'm not.

Pandora. I found your post twisted, ignorant, insensitive and deceitful. You were far too concerned with twisting truths and stabbing innuendo that anything constructive.

I guess I'll just have to explain

The test has been adjusted and the threshold for Manic has been dropped from 90% to 85%

For those of you who decide to give the test a go, PLEASE be aware that this is still under construction and based upon knowledge of the show gleeded from research on the net and the first show only!

Also, your critisism will not be about the result of the test but the way the test is caluculated (Please see the post above about how the profiles are dirived). A long monlogue explaining why the result is not you wont help. Explaining why the questions are ambiguous or unclear will help!

Just wanted to let you know, SadGeezer, that while I haven't taken this purity test yet, I remember the Lexx one (I used to visit your site very frequently when I had access to Lexx) and it was rutting hilarious!

Congratulations on apparently repeating your success (I got the jokes in Pandora's assessment, unlike Pandora).

And yes, I find your sex obsession (and manic assumption of the same in everyone else) to always be a source of great mirth.

Some people don't appreciate this kind of thing. I'm afraid you'll have to live with it.

(And Pandora - it's okay that you didn't like it also. Can't we all just get along?)

Here's my profile:

Firefly is better than sex. (Couldn't say, but I don't think so.)

You are addicted to Firefly . It is my personal opinion that you are a hopeless case. (True.)

You believe that god made stupid people because there are so many. (I don't quite get this.)

FIREFLY TWERPS are a source of cruel amusement to you. (Never met one.)

You will not admit this in public, but you have also secretly written your own Firefly episode(s) and are currently plucking up the courage to submit them to the Very Reverend Joss Whedon. (No, but I'm working on a design for a Firefly CCG...)

Rainy days and automatic weapons get you down. (Yep.)

You believe that the gene pool could use a little chlorine. (Amen.)

Sexually, you are somewhat insecure, preferring the purer more romantic relationships of the TV Show Friends, to the tacky implausibility of sex between Zoe and Mal. (Never watch Friends.)

You find that it is lonely at the top, but you eat better. (Um, ok, sure.)

You like to call feminists 'cute'. (Don't know any.)

You are either celibate or a committed family man/woman. (Celibate, though not by choice...)

You would be faithful to one partner and have not necessarily fantasised about making love with Inara or Simon. (True.)

If you had a walk on part you would want to play an Alliance Officer. (Nope, it'd be a passenger on Serenity.)

You are highly intelligent but a bit stupid when it comes to common sense. (That's me all over.)

You drive far too fast to worry about cholesterol. (I don't drive.)

People like you, but they think you're a bit of a Geek. (True.)

If you worked as much as others, you would do as little as they did. (True.)

You have a good career but you do not own a large house or flash car. (If you consider collecting government checks on account of a disability a career...)

Other Firefly fans look up to you. (Too soon to tell.)

You are a mine of information and you should be careful not to become the 'party bore' or patronising. (Yep.)

FIREFLY SADGEEZERS admire your commitment although you secretly admire their social skills and in particular, the way members of the opposite sex are all over them. (Dunno any FF SGs.)

You have recently sent an email message to Joss Whedon reporting an inconsistency in one of the episodes. (Nope, I mostly defend "inconsistencies" on the show.)

Some people call you Dr Spock - this really annoys you. (No, some people call me "Dan the Man" - this really annoys me.)
