First let me say thanks to all those who welcomed me aboard (and for the browncoat). I had my business partner's ear on the phone today and chewed it off about the series - my only problem is I both want him to watch every second of the show AND finish a peice of software he is working on for us (hmmm... money or some to talk with about firefly? gorramit! thats a tough one). ANYWAY.. Here is what I think about WHY this show was so gripping in 14 episodes:

Ok, great cast, great performances, great scripts, and great stories shot well and cleverly but thats not it. What I think it is and what grabbed me most is the concept. NOthe western set in the future part but the concept or theme mostly from Mal that says:

Stand for what you believe, dont negotiate it away, stick to your guns, damn the consequences. It resonates with Americans and some others for all of its stubborn individualism and dedication to a code. The whole war for independence may have been lost but Mal never surrendered, he didnt stop fighting for the ideals even though he may have stopped shooting. He doesnt attack the alliance, he just lives in the space formed by the cracks, out on the edge where their control over him isnt complete. He lives his way and his life has meaning becuase his code gives it meaning. I think people see themselves in those values and it resonates with them. They see themselves either as Mal or at least as being part of his crew. Fans may also just hunger for the authenticity of it all, life on serenity is real and viceral, its about survival and even more but not if it involves any capitulation or kowtowing to the dicatates of the alliance. Everyone on Serenity knows they are alive and their lives are lived without compromise. Thats simply f*cking cool and everyone would take that over a cubicle and the illusion of security any day. This is best reflected by Doctor Tam who starts to learn that all the things he gave up, the money etc. wasnt as important as family and friends. I think it looks like they are trying to just live day to day but thats actually richer than "thems that got it good" on the inner planets. This is also obvious in the movie Serenity when Mal offers everyone a chance to bail out because they "are going all the way". nobody leaves. I'd give my eye teeth for some of that and when you see it in a TV show it makes all the other crap on tv look even duller and more PC and safe and boring.

You are all here still "holding" so I have no doubt these themes resonate strongly with you, how do you define it?

JUBELLATE

To me, the show wasn't about one thing. If it was, I'm afraid I'd have gotten bored with it very quick. It dealt with realism, solidarity, curiousity, compassion, stubborness, joy in small doses, simplicity, playfullness, existentialism, dualism, vulnerability, but most of all, love, pain and belief, something we can all understand.

If there was to be only one season, Joss made a damn good play at it. Each episode showed different flaws and strengths. Of course, it always turned out right, but Joss would have grieved his viewers eventually (and did) for the sake of story. We all know in life that stories don't turn out for the best all the time. Mostly thats what cinema is about, making us forget the pains we all suffer by showing us "a better world". But Joss showed us people much like ourselves and tried to explain his ideals through them, passing a message that nothing is perfect, but there are reasons worth living, to pursue truth, justice, love, moments of joy, or simply for the sake of others.

I can't say that Joss's message is the most important, most truthful that has come out of television, but every time I watch his family, because that's what the actors showed they were, family, come out and play with his story, I couldn't help but smile, like watching a child imagine he was an astronaut, or watching a man who's built something with his own hands admire his creation. It was the feeling that something was just right because this was created, somehow the world was better because this message not only came out, but was presented by people who truly believed in it. It wasn't simply the plot or the ideas, it was the people, probably the way Joss wanted it.

The urge to save humanity is almost always a false front for the urge to rule. – H.L. Mencken
