the problem is that sex is, at once, the ultimate form of expressing love (arguably) and the ultimate form of animal gratification...it is not an either/or proposition.

I believe that the animal gratification aspect of it is directly tied to relieving stress as another poster had alluded to.

those who want to make it an either/or proposition are the ones who are going to be deceived here.

Well I was sure surprised when I saw this topic in the Firefly community.

I'll just say 3 things
1. Endorphins will soon be the last legal drug left to mankind the way the government is going
2. The number one place people are injured most is the home.
3. Injury releases more endorphins than masturbation.

So, stay home and run with scissors.

Or maybe I should just stay out of this thread.

While it sounds very clichè, if I go long periods without 'having my ashes hauled', I become aggressive and accident-prone. I can't speak for others -- especially women, who are still a mystery after all these years -- but I know it's true for myself.

"Compulsive masturbation" is an ill-defined concept in IHeartFirefly's quote above. Is 'compulsive' defined by a number? Is it defined by a situation in which the compulsion takes over one's conscious behaviors?

Compulsive behavior -- whether it's sexual addiction, abuse of alcohol and other drugs, overeating, et al -- is damaging to the body, to the 'Temple', to keep it on a Biblical theme, although I'm pretty sure Jesus was talking about the individual soul ('heart') being His temple, not the physical body itself. Otherwise, those with physical afflictions would not be fit 'temples', and you get the worst parts of the history of the Third Reich.

But to mislead people -- especially the young -- into believing that masturbation is sinful is, in itself, a sin. (All together class) Because it hurts them. It is a perfectly natural biological urge, like the biological prerogative to procreate, the need to eat and the need to eliminate bodily wastes. Can people become addicted to masturbation, to eating and even to taking laxatives? Yes, they can. How can you tell when you're addicted? (Once again, all together) When the behavior starts becoming hurtful to those around you.

See how easy a proper definition of 'sin' actually is?

Still, a person must be careful when saying, "Well, I'm a heroine addict, but I'm not hurting anyone else, so according to your definition, zoid, Im not living a life of sin." By engaging in behavior that keeps you from reaching your full potential -- regardless the fixation that the 'compulsive' or addictive behavior focuses on -- you are hurting the entire world, by depriving it of your talents and love. Again, hurtful equals 'sinful'.

So, in an effort to fully anticipate objections to this argument: Is masturbatory behavior 'natural'? Well, it is, if one considers human beings as a part of the animal kingdom, as I do. All animals engage in masturbation, male and female.

...But perhaps they are all mentally diseased, hmmm?

Secondly, did anyone ever bother to explain to you what Depression actually is?

Its caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to a range of symptoms, including, interestingly enough, self-loathing and thoughts of suicide and self harm (thats the masochistic type, not the euphemism for jerking off).

Causes of depression are hard to pin down but are believed to often be hereditary, and triggered by hormonal changes, diet and lifestyle - how much exercise you get, use of drugs etc. and Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Nowhere, NOWHERE does it say that masturbation, or for that matter promiscuity or any other sexual activiy causes depression, infact its quite the opposite - regular orgasms, mean the release of endorphins (the 'feel good' hormone) into the brain. This is probably why you felt the urge to do it so 'avidly' when at your worst.

What will worsen your experience of depression will be that afformentioned self-loathing. Your seriously unhealthy attitudes are your enemy. Grow up, realise you may be a big tall fiteen but you are far from mature and you know very little, learn to accept other views, to filter out the negative and propagandised ones, and to form your own opinions in a balanced, open minded and healthy way. This doesn't mean that you have to like masturbation or anything else, but it does mean that you have to accept that your condition isn't caused by one 'big bad' that you can blame all your ills on. Go back to your doctor, ask him what you can do to alleviate what you are feeling, what you can eat, what kind of exercise you can do, what supplements or even medicines may help in the short term. Your doctor will love it, he can charge your insurance for every hour.

Thirdly - throwing your toys out of the pram much? The people you mix with here are the most diverse bunch of folk you could hope to come across, and you have an unrivalled wealth or knowledge and experience thats your for the asking.

And yes, harsh, rail against it if you will, but the best lesson a teenager can ever learn is that they don't actually know anything, so its time to get learning.

As for the quotes from the self help books. A normal healthy adult human can regulate their behavior, 'moderation' as someone said. The type portrayed in that excerpt already have an issue, emotional or mental, for whatever reason, and compulsive behavior, of any kind, excessive visits to Mrs Palm and her five daughters or turning the lights on and off fifteen times is an outlet.
