May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Interesting article.

I speak a little Japanese and some Spanish, and have been considering brushing up on both to become more fluent, just for my own personal use and enjoyment.

I have thought about taking on Mandarin, but I would rather wait until I am more comfortable w/ Spanish & Japanese.

Supposedly Chinese would be the language of choice for voice controlled computers. Like all languages Chinese words are spoken using different combinations of sounds, but the number of sounds Chinese uses to make up words is relatively few compared to other languages.

Wooohoooo! Those language courses are finally going to pay off. Go Joss!

It might be fewer words, but you are forgetting that Chinese is a tonal language.
The pitch of a syllable is important for the meaning.
ping =! ping :)

hmmm... In Chinese (Mandarin), each sound equates to a complete idea. What you are thinking of are constructs that make up phrases and extends into larger concepts when you link up several sounds.

The unfortunate part is that althought the number of sounds are limited in the language, there can be many different ideograms with the same sound.

媽媽罵馬 (ma1 ma0 ma4 ma3) = Mother Scolds the Horse.

ESPERANTO IS FICTIONAL LANGUAGE CREATED IN POLAND IN 19TH C. WHAT ANY MAN NOTICES ABOUT THIS SPEECH IS THE USE OF LETTER "J" PRONOUNCED LIKE "Y" FOR PLURALS SUCH AS KULERO ONE SPOON BUT DU KULEROJ (PRON. "KULEROY") = TWO SPOONS.

WHERE EVER YOU GO, THERE YOU ARE.
