Morning!

I am in agreement with all above, Whitefall. And Odds hit it on the head...some of the strongest relationships are born from sincere friendships.

Spend time with her, have fun, and don't worry so much!

Well. Monday morning in a furniture store on President's Day. F-U-N.

As always, my constant companion Juan Valdez is here, comforting me in ways that no one else can.
Is it wrong to love coffee like I do?

Whitefall, the part I'm not seeing (could be missing it) is where you say that you're interested in her. Are you? Cause you don't want to go leading her on if you aren't feeling anything towards her.

Even if you do, that quote was nice and vague from her. I'd just flat out ask if she's interested in you. Then again I'm not mr. casinova or anything. Still I'm a fan of getting everything out in the open and being honest with each other.

I'm the last person I'd come to for advice on this subject, but I'd say that while you don't want to rush into things, like zeek said you should try and figure where you stand with each other. Spending about six months doing that and discovering you really like her and she's not interested would really suck. So while you don't want to rush things, don't take forever either, cause that sucks too. But I'm the last person I'd come to, so I should be the last person you listen to as well, listen to the others first.

Sorry, I just thought it was so darn cute. I assumed that you are young and just starting out in life with no relationships yet. I thought it was a very clever way of saying that. It tickled me. I thought you were trying to be witty. I truly meant to be laughing with you. I know it's difficult to have not had a relationship yet, but it will happen.

The finger painting sounds like fun, but a night in the city with your husband for grown up food, drink, and aaah . . . adult entertainment. WOW, that sounds even better. Nice Valentine's present from your Mother-in-law.

Along the same lines (relationships), there was an interesting yet not unexpected turn this weekend when dropping the boys off with Ami. I am still in the process of grokking everything that it means or might mean. After getting the boys in her van, we stood in front of it. She looked into the van at Him, then looked at me, and her last words to me before she got in to leave were "I messed up." Huh.

Getting laid off and going without work for a month or twelve changes your views radically on vehicles/ furniture/ pricey things in general. Old, scarred and paid for is way prettier than new, shiny and owed for. They lie when they call it "credit". Call it what it is: DEBT.

I'm now thinking of re-naming my truck "The Countess" because I do have the title, after all....

Dug, your post is essentially the reason I am taking the truck.

I have just recently gotten my self out of debt (Hoo-Rah, Marine Style) and have sworn not to let it happen again. No credit cards. I don't buy what I don't need (generally), and we are finally able to have a savings account AND a college fund.

Dora is a 1994 Explorer. Element is a 2004.
A free 2004 Element, for the cost of titleing it in MD and hauling it up here.

My lack of debt-iness is also causing some friction in the Mav household. Husband is vehemently against my going to DragonCon. Too expensive for essentially 48 hours.
I want to go. Doesn't help that he's pointing out we just got out of a hole and now I want to have us starting climbing back in.

Maybe you could put away $50 a paycheck (possibly going without a personal luxury, I dunno) to keep from going in the hole again. Honestly, I didn't buy anything more than 2 BDH signatures and sustinence for the whole weekend for around $350-400, including hotel and gas (given, I had a much shorter drive than you would).

NVGHOSTRIDER

At my request a friend did some research and came up with this story for the day:

You Might Not Ever Guess:Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 as age 76 , which is odd, because he always looked to be 76. (DOB: 6/27/27.) His death reminded meOf the following story.
Some people have been offended that the actor, Lee Marvin, is buriedin a grave alongside 3 and 4 star generals at Arlington NationalCemetery. His marker gives his name, rank (PVT) and service (USMC). Nothing else. Here's a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his
time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys? Well, following isthe amazing answer: In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the armedforces, often in rear echelon posts where they were carefully protected,
only to be trotted out to perform for the cameras in war bond promotions,Lee Marvin was a genuine hero. He won the Navy Cross at Iwo Jima. Thereis only one higher Naval award... the Medal Of Honor. If that is a surprising comment on the true character of the man, he
credits his sergeant with an even greater show of bravery.Dialog from "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson"His guest was Lee Marvin. Johnny said, "Lee, I'll bet a lot of people are
unaware that youwere a Marine in the initial landing at Iwo Jima...and that during thecourse of that action you earned the Navy Cross and were severely wounded.""Yeah, yeah... I got shot square in the bottom and they gave me the Cross
for securing a hot spot about halfway up Suribachi. Bad thing aboutgetting shot up on a mountain is guys getting' shot hauling you down. But,Johnny, at Iwo I served under the bravest man I ever knew...
We both got the cross the same day, but what he did for his Cross made minelook cheap in comparison. That dumb guy actually stood up on Red beach anddirectedhis troops to move forward and get the hell off the beach. Bullets flying
by, with mortar rounds landing everywhere and he stood there as the maintarget of gunfire so that he could get his men to safety. He did this onmore than one occasion because his men's safety was more important
than his own life. That Sergeant and I have been lifelong friends. When they brought me offSuribachi we passed the Sergeant and he lit a smoke and passed it to me,lying on my belly on the litter and said, where'd they get you Lee? I
replied: "Well Bob... if you make it home be fore me, tell Mom to sell theouthouse!"Johnny, I'm not lying, Sergeant Keeshan was the bravest man I ever knew. The Sergeant's name is Bob Keeshan. You and the world know him as Captain
Kangaroo. On another note, there was this wimpy little man (who just passed away) onPBS, gentle and quiet. Mr. Rogers is another of those you would leastsuspect of being anything but what he now portrays to our youth. But Mr.
Rogers was a U.S. Navy Seal, combat-proven in Vietnam with over twenty-fiveconfirmed kills to his name! He wore a long-sleeved sweater on TV,to cover the many tattoos on his forearm andbiceps. He was a master in small arms and hand-to-hand combat, able to
disarm or kill in a heartbeat. After the war Mr. Rogers became an ordained Presbyterian minister andtherefore a pacifist. Vowing to never harm another human and alsodedicating the rest of his life to trying to help lead children on the
right path in life. He hid away the tattoos and his past life and won our hearts with his quiet wit and charm.REAL heroes don't flaunt what they did; they quietly go abouttheir day-to-day lives, doing what they do best. They earned our respect
and the freedoms that we all enjoy. Look around and see if you can find one of those heroes in your midst.Often, they are the ones you'd least suspect, but would most like to haveon your side if anything ever happened.
Take the time to thank anyone that has fought for our freedom. Withencouragement they could be the next Captain Kangaroo or Mr.Rogers.

Just thought I'd share on this strange morning for me.

thanks- After careful consideration, I decided I would have to fly to Atlanta rather than drive. I can't drive 18 hours by myself. I have yet to find a flight for under $300 round trip. That, the cost of the room, board, & of course swag, makes it around $700 (at minimum) for me.

So here's an impoderable for you guys. Do certain regions of the country just have different standards for uh...skankiness? I mean I lived most of my life in the chicago suburbs so maybe I'm programmed to find that area's style to be classy or something. However, down in Austin, TX it just doesn't seem like there are all that many classy women out there. It seems more like downtown is populated by skanky chicks here.

It's especially noticeable when I travel back to Chicago for whatever reason and I'm like a kid in a candy store. Is it just that I'm programmed to like the chicago area women or something? Anybody else ever feel the same way? Am I just sounding nuts?

NVG: Really like the story...and the moral behind it. But, being the cynic I am, I had to go a-lookin for some information to verify before I go spouting "did you know Capt. Kangaroo was a military hero?" Snopes verifies part of the story (Marvin in wounded and awarded purple heart (not Navy Cross), but debunks others: Kangaroo never saw action, certainly not at Iwo Jima, and Mr. Rogers was never in the military.

hey VeX, Zeek, EDIT: Rugbug

VeX - no worries, and you can talk about her all you like (several people have already taken the liberty to let me know exactly what they think of her, which I appreciate). I am still processing everything, feelings included.

Zeek - I think that is completely valid. Personally, I know I definitely have a thing for southern girls, but I have lived here for all 26 years of my life. Not to say that I don't like girls from other parts of the country (or world, so I don't get jumped on [though I wouldn't mind being jumped on by most of them ]). The fact that they can tear somebody down with a sweet voice and a smile on their face, well, it does it for me.

I also tend to prefer pale skinned redheads with freckles and green eyes, which I am going to attribute to my scots-Irish blood, but it is not a function of social conditioning, at least not first hand.

Just dropping in for a minute to say hi. Hi everyone!

Having lived in Austin, I'll agree with Zeek: the girls who hang out in downtown Austin (especially Sixth Street) do dress skanky. I think it's due to Austin's combination of being a safe town, a college town, the only liberal enclave in Texas, and having unusually warm temperatures long after sunset. It's warm enough and safe enough to dress like that, so the college girls flaunt it, and everyone else does it to piss of the neighboring conservatives.

That said, a lot of fairly normal people live in Austin as well. Once you get out of downtown, people seem to be less skanky, even when they are dressing for the summer heat. My parents live in a cute, quiet little housing development in south Austin, and I loved north Austin when I lived there. I also hear that they have a great group of Browncoats out there.

Hey welcome to all the nifty new people who have arrived to join us!!

NV- see now I love Mr. Rogers and I named my first teddy bear Mr. GreenJeans:) Good story NV:)

Morning or afternoon all. Ah the frantic pace of school:) I do feel better having gotten a nice long weekend with plenty of Annie and Wyatt time.

Ghostrider was surprisingly good! I would recommend it. Nick Cage did a great job balancing the darkness and humor. It was somewhat campy, but not irretrievably so. I laughed a lot and really enjoyed it. So go see it:)

I didn't say hi to everyone, so HI!

I'm glad to be back on FFF.net, but not glad to be back at work after a long weekend. Days away from work DO NOT make the heart grow fonder.

Zeek, I absolutely believe you get used to and are attracted by the types of people you were raised around and live around.

If you grew up with city chic, beach casual is probably going to seem frumpy and unkempt. And what is skanky in one part of the country/world, is not skanky in another. I see some women from big cities and think they look like massive ho-bags and they're characterizing themselves as classy and high society. It MUST be regional, right?

Oh, edited to say: I love the show 'What Not to Wear' and they had an Austin episode wear they took three single women and re-did their wardrobes. Let's just say they had some issues. Skanky issues...well, one didn't, but the two others did. Skank-tastic. Too tight clothes...too much skin, etc. Maybe it's the combination of heat and hippy-laid back atmosphere...but I wasn't impressed. I mean, there's a difference with dressing out of fashion and dressing like two-bit hooker. There were more than a few in the footage that fit into the second category.

ODDSBODSKINS

m'm, i'd have to disagree when it comes to what attracts you, well, certainly in my case (although i could just be not-quite-right ) 'cos in spite of having been brought up 20 miles from anywhere in the middle of what passes for nowhere over here (20 miles is a long way by british standards =P ) in fat, league of gentlemen fans can add scottish accents to royston vasey and you'll pretty much have where i came from, and i've never yet slept with a sheep. Oh, right, point, i had one...yes! yep, i don't find too many limits on what kinda clothes/make-up i find attractive on women, from beach-casual through to city-chic. well okay, possibly not track-suits. and i DO think it's possible for a woman to wear ostensibly skanky clothes without looking skanky, but i couldn't tell you what it is about them that makes it work.

well, okay, so i have a bit of a soft-spot for redheads...but, other then that no preferances 8-)

Do you like bread?

It's warm enough and safe enough to dress like that, so the college girls flaunt it, and everyone else does it to piss of the neighboring conservatives.

Yay I'm not crazy! Or we're both crazy! Hmmm...I'll go with option #1.

I just can't see finding a real relationship downtown most of the time. I mean there has to be needles in the haystack obviously, but it just seems pointless to try to find a real girl down there.

Sexy turns to skanky when the intent of the clothing goes from attracting your eye to attracting your local police ...basically if the make-up and hair look wholesome and the outfit is brief and revealing, but not overly tight or loud, then it's just sexy...when it's tons of make-up+tight, skimpy, flashy clothes= Skanky ho bag at least from what I see at school anyway. Also the attitude with which it is worn changes the intent.

NVGHOSTRIDER

Hugs MSG. Thanks for the thoughtful cards and the like.

I posted the story this morning with the thought of, "I'm not doing all that I should." It feels like there is so much in front of me that I might have to rent a 'dozer just to plow away all the shit. Does anyone else feel like that? I'm sure most of you do. But I'm really afraid of plowing away the wrong shit. My bestest friend told me not to give up so soon on love no matter where it comes from. Is that healthy thinking?

I really wonder about my preferances now that everyone seems to be discussing them. My eye has wandered waaay beyond my usual preferances and toward some women I'd prviously found lacking appeal. And not just physical appeal. Just rambling here. I'm leaving early for a "Mental Health Day" sometime this afternoon.

Think I'll go see Ghost Rider. Of course there's a story behind that too.

ADD: I just got to hear a kid who looks alot like me ask, "What happens if my mom don't want me back?"
Add that to the list of kicks in the nuts.

DEADLOCKVICTIM

Please don’t get me started about Texas women. I have known and loved a few (well what passes for love in the lone star). I have moved away from that chaotic life and I feel that I have learned a great life lesson from that time in my past – hell, I’ve grown – but I saw this discussion about Austin women and immediately got that old sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, a longing, an ache – a desire to have my guts yanked out and stomped on, cause that’s the way the girls are in Texas….

From Ry Cooder – a bit of his song…it could be mine.

Well, we settled down, got me a little old job, '65 Fairlane Ford
Every Friday night I would stop in and cash my pay check down at the
grocery store

They had a little girl worked in there, must have been about seventeen
She was the cutest thing I had ever seen
It's the same old story and I'm afraid it wasn't too very long
Before we had fallen deeply in love and I knew it was wrong

I said baby, we got to stop this thing right here
Or my woman is gonna cut my throat from ear to ear, that's right
Tearful suffocation, she looked up in my face
I could feel her heart was breaking as these sad words she did say
"You should have told me you was married, baby
She pulled out a forty-five and let me have it, right smack between the
eyes

That's the way the girls are from Texas
That's the way the girls are from Texas
That's the way the girls are from Texas

She was guilty, I was dead
Now, what'd you think that the old judge said ?
"Ah, that's just the way the girls are down here in Texas
Case dismissed!"

That's the way the girls are from Texas
That's the way the girls are from Texas (Houston to San Antone)
That's the way the girls are from Texas (Got to love 'em right or leave
'em alone, boy)

I agree. The trick is moderation. You balance the skin. If you are showing the shoulders or cleavage, you dont show the legs. Legs out and about? A less revealing top is in order. Keep 'em guessing a bit. That's sexy. He should have to use some imagination to picture you naked.

Same with make-up...subtle moderation. Doing up the eyes? play down the lips. Going for the luscious lips? Go basic and light on the eyes.

And if you walk around acting like you'd jump anything that breathes, you can make the most demure sundress look like fishnets and a leather teddy.

(Speaking of which...Victoria's Secret has a gift for this. Something with the way the models stand plus facial expressions. Jut the hip, arch the back and open your mouth a bit. Yep...that business suit might as well be a garters, g-string and push-up. Heh.)
