Does anyone know which planets sided with the Alliance, which sided with the Independents, and which were neutral in the war?

"No, our gunships would never make it back in time. Ok, let's go help these people."

I'm pretty sure the firefly wiki gives a rundown on that:

No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.

If someone can confirm that the Serenity RPG is canonical then there is a list in the book.

No, basically. Officially we know some of the planets allegiances (Shadow for independents, Sihnon for Alliance for instance) but very little concrete.

DONCOAT

The RPG authors have acknowledged that it is not canon, since it goes beyond what's stated explicitly in the series, comics, and BDM.

However, it is full of slick ideas that fit pretty well with what we know from the show. The authors made comments to the effect that they tried to remain compatible with canon, but that Joss is under no obligation to honor their extrapolations where they went beyond the known.

I'm pointin' right at it!
