Post your favorite things from the DVD commentaries here. A couple things I liked were:

In the commentary to Serenity, when Joss said he originally had Simon say something like, "I will ALWAYS come for you, blah, blah, blah" when River says "I didn't think you'd come" and then later changed it to "well, you're a dummy." Very poignant and funny and REAL.

Similarly, in the commentary to Out of Gas, Tim mentions he had originally written this elaborate speech to convince Kaylee to sign on with the crew, and changed it at the last second to "wanna?". Classic.

MAL
Good. Thanks for the update.

I liked any commentaries done by Joss or Nathan. You could tell how much they loved the show, and the characters on it. I did like the background which only Joss could give on what he planned for his characters. I just wish more of the other characters were given a chance to comment.

yeah I kinda wish some of the other actors would have done commentries too. I think I enjoyed the war stories commentary best as a whole but then again Joss commentaries are always good.

My favourite commentary has to be from WS when Wash and Mal are attached to Niska's 3-at-once torture device. Nathan or Alan (can't remember which) says something about the device being made of metal and how it was hard on their heads/bodies to bounce against it during the electrocution scenes.

Then Nathan deadpans over top the image of him gritting his teeth and jolting: "After the 2nd day of shooting, I insisted they lower the voltage." Too funny! Even Alan had to take a moment to recover from that little bon mot. I bet Nathan is a great guy to work with, so witty.

I also liked when Morena, Jane Espenson (writer) and the costumer are commenting on Shindig. They all simply stop talking and start watching and then laugh when they realize they all went silent at the same time. This, in spite of the fact that they must have seen the ep at least 100 times by that point.

My favourite is when Nathan and Alan are talking about the little gun he has in the rescue, and how he really wanted something bigger, and Joss told him no, and he was really miffed about that!!! Also I like when Nathan and Joss are talking about the show, and just the general feelings you get from hearing them talk about something they both obviously enjoying doing very much. Very cool.

I have three favorite lines from the commentary, and they are all from the same episode... Serenity.

My first is when Nathan was asking Joss what the Chinese symbol on Inara's hourglass meant as Inara was 'working'. Joss's clipped reply of "I'M BUSY!" had me in stitches.

The next was after Nathan was talking about the great guest stars they had and how a show can only be as good as its guest stars. I loved Joss replying that it was important for the show to have great actors for the main character too, otherwise the show gets cancelled after 12 episodes.

Finally, there was Nathan saying how he's working on another show for Fox and they're thinking about airing the pilot in the middle this time.

Simon: I've never shot anyone before.

Book: I was there, son. I'm fair sure you haven't shot anyone yet.

Was that from the DVD commentary? I could have sworn that was Tim Minear talking at the DVD release panel/talk at the convention about his new show Wonderfalls (also on Fox)

Incidentally - and pretty much off-topic - that "device" was cobbled together from three honest-to-goodness scoop stretchers. I was a medic for a few years, and was shocked to recognize them. And them AGAIN in "Safe", Mal and Jane use a scoop stretcher to bring the wounded Book back aboard Serenity. Looks like it was unfastened in advance when they pulled it out from under him in the infirmary, though - those gorram catches can be frustrating to unfasten...

Anyway, I especially liked Tim'n'Joss when they really get going on the commentary for TTJ. Easy to see why they enjoy working together. That "in the pocket of the big tobacco lobbies" crack still makes me snicker.

You know... now that you mention it, I can't remember. Could have sworn it was Nathan in the commentary, but you have me doubting my memory.... And my DVDs are out on loan attempting to convert a heathen.

I really like the Joss Whedon commentaries but my favourite bit is in 'The Train Job' commentary when they critise Star Wars: Episode II for using zooms.

"Well my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."

My favourite? During Serenity when the ship was landing on whitefalls:

Nathan: "now this shot took a couple of goes.. cause Alan had trouble parking this thing"

Haha I love that

I also liked Joss and Nathan's banter, such as:

NATHAN: I like it; you're a smart guy, man...
JOSS: you know, I just...
NATHAN: ...I don't care what people say...
JOSS: I, um...uh, wha?

or the part where they were joking about how David Boreanaz (sp?) didn't like chickens so he couldn't play the part of Mal

NATHAN: Worked out well for me, though.
JOSS: Yes...but not so much for me.

I just love how much fun this group truly seemed to have working with each other, and it comes through in the commentaries (although I wonder why Adam didn't do one...I bet it woulda been HI-larious!)

NIGHTTRAIN

One of my favorites was from Alan. Something to the effect that fox won't allow fade to black because they dont want black on the TV screen. Not when you can fill it with some reality based game show.

ANKHAGOGO

--The bit on Objects in Space where Whedon explains Minear's inability to say "Boba Fett."

--The Train Job where Whedon's saying something about chickens and Chekov, and Minear asks, "So that'd be Chekov from the original Star Trek?"

--War Stories, where Alan Tudyk explains that Nathan Fillion is doing great job in Firefly, and he himself is doing a great job in The Deer Hunter.

I also like when whoever's doing the commentary gets caught up in some aspect of the storytelling -- acting, dialogue, delivery, CGI. It's just adorable.

"You are such a boo."
