Quote:

What is hotlinking and bandwidth theft?
Bandwidth theft or "hotlinking" is direct linking to a web site's files (images, video, etc.). An example would be using an tag to display a JPEG image you found on someone else's web page so it will appear on your own site, eBay auction listing, weblog, forum message post, etc.

Bandwidth refers to the amount of data transferred from a web site to a user's computer. When you view a web page, you are using that site's bandwidth to display the files. Since web hosts charge based on the amount of data transferred, bandwidth is an issue. If a site is over its monthly bandwidth, it's billed for the extra data or taken offline.

A simple analogy for bandwidth theft: Imagine a random stranger plugging into your electrical outlets, using your electricity without your consent, and you paying for it.

It has nothing to do with this site, and everything to do with someone else's site.

EDIT: We still love you, despite your lawlessness.

Okay, see it's this kinda stuff that NVG and me gets to having troubles with. I've done it before with HK and PR, and to a lesser extent LA29, but she seems to like me a lot as does DTH. It's the "touching a nerve" syndrome. Us poor unwitting saps never know when or about what we're going to say the wrong thing and suddenly (although you aren't even necessarily mad at us) we see you jump the stump and we get victimized by the soapbox derby.

(Don't really bother me but I feels like stirrin' the pot a bit. Out of touch and all like I been.)

It costs them money, so I do my best not to hotlink. You've always seemed to post some fun/random pictures...but you don't save them, so it takes less time.

As for your made up personal ad for me...I know I typed all that...you just took it out of context...and we all know context means everything. (honestly...I thought it was funny....but in another situation, might not. )

Story posted in What Song thread at the request of LA29:

So this girl I almost married really loved to sing. Everytime we'd be doing dishes or reading in the living room she'd hum or sing. And most of the time when we'd be cuddled up together reading or just cuddleing it seemed she would usually sing that song. I asked her why she sang that song and she said she only liked that song when we were close. She told me that as long as she could hold my hand than she felt safe. We'd grown up together and lost contact with each other for a few years. She'd been through a lot in the few years before we met each other again and wished that everytime something bad happened that I was close enough to hold her hand. In my bad time she was my angel. My saving grace.

Hrmmm...forgot to look for that red-head picture. I will see what I can find over the weekend. My license picture does show some red-headedness, but it had faded to brown-ish which is what it often did...and one reason I stopped going red.

YinYang, I didn't think you were being ignorant or ethnocentric. I think that society's need for feminism in the US and other "western" countries is vastly different from the needs of women in other parts of the world. They are so different, in fact, that I don't think we can even really use the same word for them. I don't think a campaign against female genital mutilation (such as the campaign listed on the EqualityNow link I posted) can even be called "feminism". Outside of western countries, we're fighting for basic human rights for women.

(Anyone who doesn't want to read about a big life-changing moment for me, feel free to skip down to the *** below.)

The status of women worldwide is a huge issue for me, and the primary reason that I changed my career path in college. I had wanted to go into international politics since I was 9 years old, and in college I excelled in all those classes, got onto the college Model United Nations team, and was the only freshman taken to the West Coast MUN conference, in a year when my college had been given the huge honor of playing the US in MUN. I was offered the position of co-chair for the MUN team the next year, a position that had never been held by a sophomore.

But in preparation for the West Coast conference, I had to do a lot of research into the status of women worldwide. When I did MUN in high school, I had always gravitated towards the Commission on Human Rights, and stayed away from the commission's sub-group on Women's Rights (hearing high school girls debate Women's Rights is downright painful). But the entire West Coast MUN conference that year was focused on the status of women worldwide, no matter what Council/Commission you were on, so I had to do a lot of research into female infanticide, bride burning, genital mutilation, etc. And it hit me like a ton of bricks.

I ended up calling my dad in tears in the middle of the night, saying that I couldn't do this. It felt so wrong for a bunch of upper middle class, largely white, college students to be spending all this money on a conference to *talk* about these things. I wanted to cancel the entire conference and just send the money to organizations who are actually *doing* something about these atrocities. My dad managed to convince me that a lot of good comes out of MUN (the UN has adopted many Resolutions passed on to them by MUN groups worldwide), and that I had been given a unique role as a woman representing the US on the Commission for Human Rights, and that something I said could actually end up having a real affect somewhere down the road.

So I went through with the conference, and threw myself into it completely. I think it was actually after the conference that I was offered the co-chair for the next year. I told them I would think about it over the summer, and the decision that I finally came to was that while these issues would always be important to me, I knew I could never be happy if it was my career. I'm the sort of person who would always go to bed at night thinking about all the things I *couldn't* fix, rather than the things that I could. So I ended up going to a different college the next year, and shifting my academic focus more towards statistics and sociology, and away from International Relations, and my current career is a direct outgrowth from those later studies.

(*** Those of you who wanted to skip all that, jump back in here.)

Anyway, one of the things I really love about Browncoats is the close association with EqualityNow, and it really feels like coming full circle for me. I can have a job that makes me happy, but still support groups like EqualityNow. So the reason I posted the links yesterday wasn't to point out that you were being ethnocentric, or anything of the sort, YinYang. I just wanted to point out that a group that Browncoats have supported so generously is working diligently to advance the rights of women worldwide.

But back to the original topic of modern feminism in the US, I do think a moderate amount is necessary in certain areas. But what I'm looking for is respect, acceptance, and equality in my work place, and I realize that anything that even smells like feminism will be off-putting to my male coworkers (who make up 90% of my industry). So militant feminism ("down with men") is right out, and even moderate feminism ("women should be given the same rights, privileges, and opportunities as men") has to be applied delicately.

{{Hugs}} to YinYang. I wasn't trying to put you down, love, or even argue with you. My first point was just that I think the gender make up of one's profession does make a difference in how one views modern feminism -- and since both HK and I work in male-dominated fields (at least I think HK does, correct me if you don't, HK), that affects how we view and utilize feminism. And my second point was that, given the amount of money Browncoats have given to EqualityNow, and Joss's obvious love for the group, I think all of us should be educated about the goals of EqualityNow.

You're right! It does sound like a personal! But regarding the dimples (proud owner of them myself btw, but now they're just very deep creases...), not mentioning them doesn't matter as they are prominantly on display in the picci just to the left...

Heh...I don't know how to make "About me" NOT sound like a personal. It's not intentional, though. And neither are those dimples...they just seem to appear every time I smile, invited or not. ;)

Whenever I need an ego boast, I just need to call on our dear MSG. Really. I'm just a normal girl. You'd have potentials thinking I was some celebrity beauty. Sooooo not the case.

(Funny, e-mail guy, after I said I was losing interest because of his weird communication style...and happening to mention my biggest fear when meeting him was that he would be short (said he was 5'9" in his profile...men usually over-estimate height, attractiveness, physical fitness, eh-hmmmm size, etc) he replied with a back-handed compliment that was really a slam on my body. Whatever. Midget. )

Hey all...hope the weekend is going well for everyone:)

NV- hey change is good right

Rugbug- face it, you are a goddess!!!

Penguin- HUGS

OK cat soccer pic is soooooo funny. Even if my team ( Sheffield) lost to MisterG's team(Liverpool) today:( it's still been a good weekend and all. Even if the next week will start with me being stuck in REACH training on Monday and Tuesday..eeew! At least that means I can sleep in and take my time getting ready.

It might be dead right now, Odds, but it will start to revive when folks start waking up in a few hours.

Hobbleit, I'm not sure I'd want any cat of mine in that contraption. Poor kitty.

It's cuz it's the weekend. Those of us with computers during the weekend need to figure out something to talk about, I guess >.<
