If anyone is voting at tvtally.com make sure to check out the community section. Under general TV discussion there is a poll for the best Joss Whedon series. Make sure to give Firefly your vote, on the down side you have to be a member to participate in this poll.

TROUBLEMAKER

I have a theory on how Xena is winning. Wondering if the computer folk can chime in on this:

First theory: they are using a something similar to the Flyvote program; however, their version actually casts the vote automatically every hour. 23 votes per day * several people leaving computers on 24/7 = Kicking Browncoat butt

Second theory: Couple of folk have found a way to vote more than once an hour. Is it possible to trick the server to think you havent voted in the last hour?

Third theory: Its a Cylon conspiracy... Garram toasters.

If only I could find a way to trick the rule... I'd vote 50 times per day :) Lexx and our allies incl you would become the top 5 in no time.

no I don't believe they have found a way to trick the 60 minutes rule. If they did, they'd be getting many more votes.

My bump may be the only one from this hour, but it's unique and special! I love my bump!

I'd like to say this.

I firmly believe that the Xena folks are playing 100% by the rules; no ifs ands or buts.

First theory: From a "computer science" perspective, such a program is possible. Rich (who runs TV_Vote) is a pretty bright guy. My guess is if he saw a trend, especially in a large group of voters like us Firefly crew (or other crews who will go nameless), he'd simply start throwing all our votes away. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out folks don't vote 23.9 times a day when they are doing it manually; at least, not for more than a day or two.

Second theory: There are ways. And Rich knows most of 'em and throws 'em out. Can it be done and not be caught? Sure. Will I say here how? Absolutely not. (edit: Nor will I provide suggestions to cheat elsewhere.) Do I think this is what Xena folks are doing? Seriously doubt it. If you think this is the case it is only because you have not examined the extremely organized way the Xena fans coordinate.

Third theory: This is a distinct possiblity. We've sent a few spies disguised as human looking cylons into thier midst and have found the central cylon authority is requiring all networks to broad cast Xena shows with the TV_vote website URL running in the bottom of the screen like a school closing alert. There's even rumors that cylons get brownie points for voting for Xena.

---------------------------------------

I firmly believe that Xena is competing on the "high and fair ground."

I'm voting when I can (at home).
Seems (speculating here), that I twigged the bot flag at the vote site from work. Scenario: Flyvote timer goes off on my main PC, I cycle through my computers, casting votes using a KVM (Keyboard Video Mouse) switch (lets me operate them all from same KV&M), I vote from the flvote PC last, so I know it's been more than an hour since the last vote from any machine (by a minute or two).
Apparently that's a bit too regular for the vote site.

Anyone else who may be in a similar situation:
Pick a show near the bottom of the nomination list, record its votes, cast a few for it, check tomorrow to make sure they counted. That's how I found mine weren't counting anymore.

So even though it says 1 vote per IP per hour is allowed, it doesn't seem to be quite true.

ALTERNATE THEORY:
LeadB et al please sanity check this one:
Perhaps my corporate IT dept/firewall isn't allowing my votes to go out somehow? I transfer data to/from other sites, but maybe this one has been specifically blocked? I can post here, and elsewhere, so this is feeling pretty thin. Why block a site that isn't receiving much in the way of data?

I've mentioned it a few of times on older threads but some might not have seen it.

If you use AOL you can vote twice every hour, once through AOL browser and once on Internet Explorer. Since I've been voting I vote twice an hour.

I definitely works because I started voting for a show on the nominations list that wasn't on there already, so that I could track the votes.

SUASOR

I checked with one of the media metrics sites, and found that richlabonte.net/tvvote/ was getting a lot of vistors who also hung out at;

forums.scifi.com
tv.groups.yahoo.com
movies.groups.yahoo.com
dlssonline.com
coasttocoastam.com
invisionfree.com
fanfiction.net

Makes sense that these sites have lots of Xena fans, and lots of discussion about the voting campaign. Viral marketing at work.

Also note that anyone can use flyvote to vote for any of the competing shows. I suspect the Xena crowd heard of Flyvote, and quicky saw how useful it could be to them.

Congrats to the Xenites for drumming up so much support, if they can do it so can we.

Our problem is not the number of votes Xena is getting, its the lack of votes we're producing. We don't need to "cheat", what we need is more voters. 1K per day was good going in the past, but now the bar has been raised and we need 1.5K per day.

At 10 votes per person per day (not too hard with Flyvote), 150 dedicated voters will do the job. We can do this, keep voting, hold the line until the reinforcements arrive.

Rich disagrees: From the TV_Vote Google site:
Quote:

There is a rumor on certain fan boards that if you have more than one
browser on your computer - say Internet Explorer and the AOL browser -
you will be able to vote more than once an hour by simply using both
browsers. This is a myth, not true, false information spread by the
enemy, nonsense, do you really think we're that dumb?, etc.

Your IP address is assigned to your connection, not to your browser,
so if you try this and vote more than once an hour we will smell a rat
and delete all the votes coming from your IP address.

Once again: if you cheat, we will delete!

From the "Misapplication of Math Department":

Given the number of produced shows and the number of average votes, Firefly comes out ahead.

Firefly average show votes: 80

Xena average show votes: 10

Firefly is 8 times better than Xena.

"Your IP address is assigned to your connection, not to your browser, so if you try this and vote more than once an hour we will smell a rat and delete all the votes coming from your IP address."

Also comments about votes from multiple computers being rejected as 'too regular'.

If this is true, then all this tactical voting and hordes of people using flyvote to vote on the nail of 60 minutes might actually be counter-productive - if Rich thinks you're overcooking it, he might be trashing your votes. It might pay to back off a bit from the theoretical max of 1/hour and see if the recorded votes actually go up?

Just a thought...

I have to say it is all getting a bit 'tactical' nowadays. I kind of pine for the days when people for their favourites without pursuing a 'scifi bloc' or a 'western bloc'. Doesn't seem in the spirit really. Oh well, my 2c worth (and yes I vote half a dozen times a day for Firefly! though I rarely comment on these boards)

Course it might actually be that Xena gets more votes because it has more fans... shame on me for the thought :)
