You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

This might sound odd, and it probably means absolutely nothing, but it's kinda been gnawing at me for awhile.
Every single female on that boat had brown eyes. Most of the men had blue or green eyes, save only Book.
I doubt it was a big factor while casting; you take the actors that are right for the part and don't cast by eye color, obviously. But I still think it's interesting.
(Especially considering the horridly artificial blue eyes the American Serenity DVD cover stuck on River, though that is a different topic for a different time, and has in fact been covered many times)

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

I think Kaylee has hazel eyes rather than brown, but yes, it's something I've noticed, too.

And it pleased me!

No doubt, blue eyes are something special, but brown eyes are beautiful, too, and it's nice to see them on tv. The number of blue-eyed vs. brown-eyed lead characters tend to be very unproportional to how many people actually do have blue eyes vs. brown eyes.

I guess it's just one of those things that most people have an unusual love for.

You could be right on the hazel thing, but they always looked much more brown than green to me. They are certainly darker than most of the men's eyes.
I think brown eyes are beautiful, too. I think most eyes are beautiful. Hell, Gina has the most beautiful gorramn eyes I've ever seen. It's just the gender split that I find rather interesting. I don't know why, just one of those things that struck me.

I see what you mean about the gender split. It really is curious!

But maybe it has to do with the fact that blue eyes are more "special", at least in Mal's case. The hero has to stand out and blue eyes - much like blond hair - have a way of catching the light in a particular way.

In a cynical perspective, it also emphasises the "whiteness" of the male heroes, but that's not something I blame on Joss' casting but rather the whole tv and movie roster.

Brown eyes tend to be for "minorities".

In women, it's apparently less pronounced, but even on the crew, Kaylee is the only fully caucasion-looking crew member. Inara, Kaylee and River each have more "exotic" looks and thus the brown eyes are hardly surprising.

The men on Serenity, Book aside, are all quite firmly "white", even Simon who would theoretically share River's background exactly.

Of course, I do think that it's mostly accidental, they just took the people who are right for the parts, but maybe the fact that they auditioned for the parts in the first place has to do with having the traditional male tv look, which tends to include blue eyes.

KAYNA

I love my captain

It is an interesting detail.
Isn't that how BEB came up thier user name? Something about writing a fic and noticing all the guys had blue eyes? I don't fully recall.

Op: You're fighting a war you've already lost.
Mal: Yeah, well I'm known for that.

Or maybe it's even that, because of the way they look, they were given more opportunities in movies and TV to strengthen their acting abilities, which led them to be the sort of talent that Joss and co. wanted.

It is pretty neat, though - but it doesn't look to me like Jewel has brown eyes, unless they're just lightish brown, or some variant.

And there you are with your beautiful banner, Kayna! I love that banner.

I just want to toss this in for discussion.
Although Nathan Fillion has beautiful blue eyes and therefore so does Mal.. most of the time Mal's eyes look dark. Sometimes brown. Because of the lighting and the smoldering Mal looks.
Ok.. that's another conversation.

In fact the last picture in Kayna's banner is the moment I realized that Mal had blue eyes.

Another note: When the comics "Those Left Behind" came out, Mal was pictured with brown eyes.

Ask me how to join the Appreciatin' Nathan crew!

When we're down, don't frown. Come join the camp-out at serenitymovie.org. Someone think of a name and we'll start a crew over there!

Yep, that's what I mean. :)

Their looks are what allowed them to get to a place where they would even be considered for the role (or just auditioning for it) because they fit the generally desired look, which includes light eyes.

If Sean, for example, had dark eyes, he might not have gotten to that place. Or maybe he might, but something tells me it might not have been as likely.

Unfortunately I hadn't noticed anyone's eyes til y'all mentioned it, but I did want to jus interject that I love Kayna's banner!

Come to think of it... there are an awful lot of actor/esses out there with light eyes. Not that that's a bad thing, but it does make one stop a think a bit. Maybe I'm just bias since I was blessed with brown eyes.

Seems to me that Sean was often lit to make his eyes look darker as well.

And Jewel most definitely has brownish eyes. I see a hint of green, but they are NOT blue and not even that light. Hazel is a good description. And, like most of them, they tended to look a little darker in the darker lighting.
