Read on SciFi.com this morning that Stephen King is confirming that Lost co-creators J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof will adapt his Dark Tower's novels for the screen.

Reference the article here:

I have just recently started reading the first of these books, so I'm not into it far enough to make a fair judgement, although I am intrigued by this thought.....

Should Nathan Fillion be approached to play "The Gunslinger"?

Thank you, Bryce. My instincts on this were right then!

Well, I truly hope they do approach him. *crosses fingers*

And I will! I love Stephen King.. I have no idea why it's taken me so long to get to this series.

Better to read it now that the whole series is out.I read it from the start & waited for the 7 years between the 3rd & 4th books. It was torture!

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed with you that they seek out Nathan for this role..

I'm going to have to disagree here. While Nathan does have the acting chops and has displayed the ability to portray a surly, tortured character I thought Roland was written as much older and not particularly appealing physically. I can't imagine that you of all people would suggest that Nathan isn't pretty.

I have no suggestions as to any known actors who could fit the bill, it might be best if they went with some unknown.

You really will enjoy the series. There are a couple of books that didn't impress me but that may have been because my expectations were too high. The conclusion is amazing. Enjoy.

I haven't read far enough into the book... introductions don't count right?.. to know what description Stephen King has made of Roland. Therefore, my reference was only due to the "surly, tortured character" part and the knowledge that "Nathan does have the acting chops".

The book I have here is illustrated and the person in profile and shadow on the cover is dressed in a brown coat... truly reminiscent of Mal and the inside drawings do not show Roland as unattractive.

Therefore my only reference led me to suspect that Nathan might be a good fit. So I asked. Thank you for your opinion.

Oh, and you're right.... I'd never suggest that Nathan's not pretty.

Roland is supposed to be older & much more weathered than Nathan is .But Nathan does fit the part so well otherwise that I can overlook that...Hollywood prettys things up all the time !

The best choice would really have been Clint Eastwood from the Dirty HArry days ,but he's just too old now.So if there's to be no Eastwood , I'd have to go with Nathan.

I think Mickey Rourke would make a shiny Roland. Nathan - not so much, I'm afraid. Although I wouldn't mind, of course, and since Roland's appearance doesn't really have an impact on the story, I'd say it'd be shiny. Besides, it wouldn't be the first time that characters from books are represented by better looking people when the books are being turned into movies or shows.

Interesting choice-Mickey Rourke..I like it.

I've always thought an animated version would be very shiny too !

I'm on the 7th book right now and cant help but wonder how they are going to cram everything that happens in one movie. I also agree that Nathan wouldnt be the best choice but he would be a prety good one.

I despised the last book with a passion..
I truly believe that King ruined this series after book 5...But the final end for roland wasn't so much a surprise as a letdown.I never thought he's live happily ever after, but that ?

I am very crushed by this ,as these charachters are as dear to me as our BDH's are !

NO SPOILERS PLEASE

It's been 6-7 years since I read the Glass Tower or something, haven't read on since then. Or was it Wolf's Moon? It was Roland's back story.

YEah I agree after the 5th book the series started to go down for me a bit. I have been on the last book for a while now as apposed to the other books it didnt take me too long to finish them.

When I told my dad (who got me started on the books as well as everything else King) that I knew the ending and my dislike for it he said "Imagine how I felt" since he started reading the first book when it originally came out. I cannot image wanting to read the ending for sooo long and then to get that.

Which is what happened to me..I even waited the long painful 7 years between books 3 & 4...it was agony ,as book 3 left off with the whole Blaine cliffhanger !

See I knew I wasn't the only one who was left disappointed by the ending !

And I'm in such good company !

ROLAND19

As much as I dig Nathan as an actor, I have trouble picturing him as Roland.

So who should play him? I've, over the years, thought of several people who I think could do it. Most recently, while I was watching 'The Prestige' it occured to me how great Hugh Jackman would be in the role.

Other ideas - Viggo Mortenson, of course. And how about if they did the movie in all CGI, like 'The Polar Express,' or Gollum in 'LotR,' my main man Clint Eastwood. He is the basis for Roland, after all.

Those are all of the ones I can think of at the moment. I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting. Oh well.

I think Nathan may have the chops, but I think he's still too young. My thoughts lean towards Viggo Mortensen. He's got the rugged, though I'm not sure he has the depth to play Roland convincingly.

I totally agree that Eastwood would have been the perfect Gunslinger, but now that he is older I think he would be great at playing Cort.

What about Alan as Eddie Dean? Eddie always had a snarky comment or two, but had some very serious parts as well.

Forge- great idea -eastwood as Cort would be perfect !

Mortensen was alright as Aragorn, but I couldn't see him as Roland. But I'm not that big of a fan of his ..

I have thought that Hugh Jackman might be a good choice..

But I still stand by a somewhat Younger Clint Eastwood as my wish, but since there's no going back in time ( at least for us ) I'd still say Nathan would be an excellent choice !

I read the last couple of books in the series after seeing Firefly, and I very much thought of Roland as Nathan. More to the point, Gina Torres would be the ultimate Susannah and Jewel Staite an excellent Susan Delgado (remember, she only appears in flashbacks). Unfortunately, I don't think Alan Tudyk is quite right for Eddie, and I have no idea who'd play Jake.

I'm surprised you guys didn't like the ending. Sure it wasn't happy but if you remember Roland was repeatedly warned about seeking out the Dark Tower and that he would not be happy about what was waiting for him therein.

Select to view spoiler:

It goes without saying that this is King's version of Sysiphus, condemned to repeat the same act again and again.

I'm kind of surprised too. I mean, of course I wanted Roland to open the door at the top of the Tower and have Susan and the rest of his fallen friends there, waiting to greet him, but the given ending is much more appropriate.

Besides, given enough chances, Roland might eventually get that happy ending.

This way, King has covered all his bases, without probably even realizing it.
