Hi. i'm new to your site, glad to know other firefly fans out there.

Anyway i was wondering if anyone picked up on this story point regarding Inara. While watching the DVD with commentary on both "Serenity" and "Out of gas" i come to the theory that Inara is actually on Serenity for some reason because she is actually sick and dying.

In "Serenity" Joss tells us that most fans might think that the syringe she pulls out is a suicide kit when it is actually not. At that point i thought she might be an adict. then while watching "out of gas" commentary, one of the commentators says that a story point of Inara's is hinted at in her scene with simon. the only significant seeming thing in it is when she sort of reflectively says "i don't want to die at all." which we overlook as just relevant to the moment upon first seeing it but which makes sense as a hint of deeper meaning along with the other hint.

i don't know if anyone else has posted on this as i'm a newbie. any comments?

Yep. Check out the 'Theory that Inara is terminally ill or under a death-threat' thread here:

Another clue was River's psychic 'reading' of Inara when she says, "I'm a big girl, just tell me." Most people assumed this was directed at Mal, but I took it to be a memory of something she once told a doctor who was hesitant to tell her the bad news...

RIVER
Purple elephants are flying.
MAL
Good. Thanks for the update.

I assume that Rivers ability to 'read' people would be the thoughts that are driving their actions, even if they aren't conscious of it.

Jaynes thought was something that was nagging him and was definitly on his mind.

Books thought was probably something that he had heard or said and it was in the back of his mind bugging him.

Simons thought was something that would bother him but he would never say it out loud or consciously deal with it.

If we follow that logic, then it's reasonable that Inara's thoughts were something that she had heard and was in the back of her mind. I think it supports your theory that she heard some sort of bad news and is on Serenity because she is running away from her bad news.

Maybe she is sick or her family died and she is afraid she will get sick.

Yes, I like that. Their statements are all things that are weighing heavily on them, even if not at the conscious level.

I still don't understand the context of Mal's thought. "None of it means a damn thing"

What could he be refering to?

The war effort?

Perhaps...or maybe just generic existential angst.

RIVER

MAL

The others thoughts sounded very specific, I would think his thoughts refered to a specific comment or feeling.

There seems to be a suggestion here that these are simply thoughts, or something people have heard, but it looks to me like these are actual quotes from the characters, both past and future. Jayne's is from the past, Simon's (if I remember rightly) comes shortly after River's "vision", in the corridor with Kaylee.

The power of this is the ambiguity we are left with. Are Mal and Inara talking about the war and a doctor's conversation, or is there some alarming tragedy just around the corner for each? Is Book a reformed mercenary/Alliance soldier/[insert theory here], or is his true nature yet to be revealed? We don't know, and in that respect we can feel some of the angst that River feels (a major purpose of this sequence IMHO) - she sees it all, but cannot comprehend it because there is no structure or continuity, no sense of time to any of it.

Hmm? Oh, sorry, yes, this thread's about Inara isn't it? Oops!

Possibly it's just another important update on the purple elephants.
