First we had a useless corporate meeting in which nothing was said that I hadn't heard before yet I still had to be there at 8 am. I didn't go sober, and talked through the entire thing. The manager who hosted it bitched out the guy I was talking to, but the next time I saw her I gave her a hard stare and she didn't say anything to me. Then, the main event last night: (apologies to LA as she has already read this)
I was the closing server last night, and we were dead. There were literally no guests in the restaurant. A party of 12 showed up, and I set up their table. As I was getting their drink order, another 2 parties of 2 came in, one went to the bartender, the other to me. There was still another server on who was cleaning his tables but had already been cut. As I am still getting drinks for the party and table, I see said server and the manager setting up another party. I asked how big of a party I was getting, and the server told me the manager asked him to take it, and when I said that I could handle it, he said that he had already been talked into it by the manager. The manager didn’t ask me or the bartender if we would take them, as we were the two people on the floor, but instead gave them to this other guy. Only 7 of my 12 ended up eating, so I couldn’t add the 18% gratuity to their measly $88 check. There were at least 15 people in the other party, all eating and having drinks from the bar, and with that gratuity he probably made $25-30 THAT I SHOULD HAVE LEFT WITH. It’s hard to get on my bad side, even harder at a restaurant as I know I will be dealing with stupid people on a daily basis, but the manager and the server have both managed to get themselves on it. At this point I just hope I can control myself enough to not get fired.
