So, I introduced myself a few days ago as a brand new Firefly fan. I have seen the whole series and the movie just once (only very recently), via Netflix. I've ordered my own copy of the TV show but Amazon has not sent it yet... ("super saver" shipping sucks...)

Anyway, I had a REALLY bad day at work this morning, so I decided I REALLY needed a Firefly fix - need to take some vacation leave and go home and watch Firefly and eat chocolates. But since my disks haven't arrived yet...what to do?

Well, I live in a pretty small town in a remote part of northern Wisconsin. Rhinelander, WI - population of less than 8,000 people. We have ONE grocery store, ONE video store, etc. Nevertheless, I got in my car and went to the video store in the hopes of finding what I needed, and SUCCESS!! They had all four disks of Firefly, plus Serenity!! What are the odds? LOL

So, I shall get my Firefly fix after all. Hurrah, maybe life isn't so bad... :)

stonearch:

Welcome to Firefly fandom. I'm glad you were able to find a local pusher for our wonderful, shared addiction.

I suspect that Firefly may appeal to a rural mindset, more than to an urban one. I think my Dad and Grandpaw would've loved the show as much as they did Gunsmoke and Bonanza, back in their day.

Sure, they may have been somewhat shocked by the sexuality and occasional 'saucy' talk ("Just 'cause Kayley gets all lathered up over some fancy..."). But, I think they'd have definitely fallen for the depiction of hard-working folks trying to get on with the business of living, despite a distant, monolithic government's best efforts to make that increasingly more difficult.

Takes a certain kind of person to live in a small town, regardless which state it's in. That kind of person values their space, their 'elbow room', and doesn't much appreciate it when somebody a long ways away tries to fit them in with the rest of a hustle-and-bustle society by passing Laws.

My father and grandfather were both law-abiding men -- and taught me to be one, too -- but that didn't mean they didn't grumble and cuss about some of those laws that just "get in a man's way", as Mal put it.

So, Dad and Grandpaw would've 'gotten' Firefly, for it's messages and themes. They'd've felt they had something in common with Firefly's characters (or at least found them funny, like city-slicker Wash). And I don't think they'd have held anything against Inara either, because... Well, because! I mean, neither of 'em were blind!

Anyway. I don't think it's so strange that your local video shop would have the best damn TV show in history on their shelves.

Now all you've got to do is make up some flyers to leave at the video store, inviting everyone to a Firefly shindig at your place (or a suitable bar with a projection video player). Find out who the other 'closet Flans' in your community are, and share your love of the show with the Unconverted.

No sense keeping all the Firefly-y goodness to yourself, right? Just remember to check that such a "public performance" wouldn't violate the copyright. (NB: That's what I'm talking about when I say, 'laws that get in a man's way'.)

Thoughtfully,

zoid

P.S.
Grandpaw lived his whole life on a farm, and Dad's personality was deeply affected by his agrarian roots. I, on the other hand, am strictly a city boy and not ashamed of it. Pack me in like a sardine with 5 million other souls, anytime. Small-town life is too boring, for my sensibilities. But, I do have an appreciation for that lifestyle, from first-hand experience. It's peaceful and uncrowded, the air's fit to breathe and you don't have to lock your doors (let alone fix them with bars and armored panels).

It's just that I can't stand all that for more than month or two at a go. Trying to pass combine harvesters that take up 1 1/2 lanes of a two-lane state highway...doing 25 in a 65...while you're trying to get to the nearest IGA to buy a candy bar and a magazine just to break the monotony... I gotta get back to a city -- any city -- just to keep my head from exploding.
