I hope we can beat them to 200K as well but they've stepped it up as well. Its hard not to be happy getting 3 or 4 days straight at 1400+ but the Xenites are just really kicking ass lately. I mean, 1555...wow.

Just ran the numbers using weekly averages:
Bonanza is averaging 796 v/d. They are projected to hit 200K in 8 days (Saturday, March 24).

Firefly is averaging 1,272 v/d. We are projected to hit 200K in 10 days (Monday, March 26), overtaking Bonanza the following day.

We need some combination of:
Bonanzai maintain weekly average votes, we need
1,547 votes/day to tie
1,754 votes/day to win

We maintain our weekly average votes, Bonanzai must fall to:
663 v/d for us to tie.
589 votes/day for us to win

As our beating them to 200K also means us passing them for the #2 slot, I wouldn't plan on the Bonanzai backing off. If anything, I'd expect them to rally all the harder. That leaves it for us to step up.

It's a good day to die folks. 'Course that isn't plan 'A'. Let's smash a few records!

Well the 'B's are pulling about 800 votes a day and with 5310 votes to go they should break the 200k mark in 7 days. we need 10523 votes so to tie them we need to put up a bit over 1500 votes per day. To flat out beat them we need a bit over 1750 votes per day.

Does anybody know 30 people who can put ten votes a day in that aren't already voting?

Well, I'm trying to do more today. I can vote 6 times per hour right now using other peoples computers at work. Of course, I'm going to be able to that most Friday's for awhile.

Another bump in honor of Alan's B-Day!

It would be I would get most poetical about my bump.

Oh... to misquote someone, "your vote is problematical". You see, those computers are (most likely) on the same subnet. They will all be thrown out, I'm afraid. Since they have no way to know if it is one person cheating (6 people on their own computer, or one person on 6 computers (or once person kicking around their DHCP server), the site assumes all traffic from the same subnet is a cheat. You are better off voting just once per hour.

As FLAtRich says, one vote per human per hour is the intent; if he can catch otherwise, he tosses the votes.

Are they both connected to the same wireless router? Its only one vote per IP address not per computer. If both of your computers are operating off of the same wireless router then theres your explaination.

What I don't understand is ever other F***ing show on the chart to vote for has had at least a couple seasons, and you're (Fox... may they burn in hell) Telling me, that Firefly doesn't even warrant a 2nd chance. Xena went like what 4-6 seasons, Bonanza... TV Classic... FIREFLY... Fans left wanting... I hope to see it ahead of Bonanza here real quick though.

It's easy to tell that they are different computers. Much harder to tell if they are different fingers pushing the buttons.

The rule (as stated) is "One vote per IP per hour."
The rule (as intended) is "One vote per person per hour."
The rule (as enforced) is "One vote per subnet (think building or corporate server) per hour."

Today's numbers will be late (after my dinnerish). Going to be afk all day judging a Tae Kwon Do tournament.

Sad, but true. As I mentioned...
"You see, those computers are (most likely) on the same subnet. They will all be thrown out, I'm afraid. Since they have no way to know if it is one person cheating (6 people on their own computer, or one person on 6 computers (or once person kicking around their DHCP server), the site assumes all traffic from the same subnet is a cheat. You are better off voting just once per hour."
and between you and your partner, you are better off voting just once per hour. Much as my wife and I (and our 255 childern, uncles, and inlaws who live in the same house and each have their own computer... ok, mostly kidding, only the wife is real, but I am hoping you see the point from FLAtRich's perspective) make a point of casting only one vote between the two us. Likewise, this is another 8-10 votes a day FF is losing since my wife is also a fan; however, from a "fairness" perspective, this is a situation all shows must deal with equally.

Quote:

There should be a way he can tell that the votes are coming from 2 different computers.

"Should", I'd say it would be "nice", but the hurdles are significant. Unfortunately, when the web was built, much of the technology was designed around a "peers of equal" perspective. Basic web browsing was intended to make content available, not necessarily designed to ensure that unique systems were positively known, and (which is nearly impossible) forced to a per human verification.

Let's say you have two systems A and B. I have a server C. To make things more like a typical "home setup" your systems A and B are "NAT"ted to a single IP address. The "NAT" being done by your in house router could actually be done, say, by a programmable Linux systems. Let's say I understand all these terms (and I don't really) and worse, I am determined to cheat. I can setup that NAT routers so instead of looking like I have my two real systems, I have 240 real systems; perhaps even more. Since I control the NAT, FLAtRich has -no- way to know that I really have two systems; I can alter the NAT programming such that it is indistinguashable from the server's (system C above) perspective what is really going on here.

So, let's say FLAtRich can figure out a way to determine there's really two systems behind the NAT; now, given that a NAT is probably to a single household; how does he know there's really two people associated to those two systems. While only my wife and I live at home, I currently have 4 computer systems hung onto my home network; each using that natted connection (I personally use a "black box" router which I cannot (easily ;-) ) reprogram); and I have two more systems in a closet I could easily hook up. How on earth is FLAtRich supposed to figure out there's only 2 people running those 6 systems? I have a friend who has a gaming network in his basesment; he has 16 systems and he lives by himself.

Anyway, to make a long story short, while I "wish" there was an easy way for FLAtRich to know how many people lived in my house, and how to tell each was voting separately and honestly and independently, there really isn't. I personally believe that he has struck a reasonable compromise. I have considered many possible strategies on what could be done to "lighten the rules" so more folks can vote fairly; but I see no way to block the cheats against those ideas... so keep falling back to believe what FLAtRich has done is a reasonable compromise.

The -intent- is one vote per human per hour. The -enforced rule- is one vote per ip block per hour; with the understanding that when a human figures out a way to vote twice in an hour, they are cheating and if he finds a way to block the cheat (and he's pretty clever, he probably will (or already has)) he'll simply, without warning or advisement, throw the votes away.

I will note that some local IP providers will let you buy a 2nd IP; my provider allows for that. This falls into the "ip block" restraint since that second ip will always be in the same "block"; unfortunately, if you get one and use it to vote twice, then both votes are discarded (as mentioned previously).

Unless you get folks to buy systems with fingerprint scanners (which are starting to be fairly common on high end laptops as part of theft prevention) and/or retinal scanners, I cannot conceive a way of making sure you have "distinct humans" out there casting votes.

I take it back, the fingerprint and retinal scanners would be attached to our systems; even as implemented on most laptops, the system is designed to prevent access to the system. Once access is established, the user has full autonomy to modify the software and since the system is under the control of the user, it is likely that the system, especially when sharing the authentication mechanism back out to the web, can be compromised to send missleading data back to the server in question. So... if you ever wonder why folks are reluctant to allow "real" elections to be run off the web, you might be starting to get some insight as to the challenges.

Based on yesterday's numbers, Bonanza is 5 days out from 200K, and we are 6. Going to be close!

Can't do top10 + BSG w/out all of yesterday's numbers; sorry. Top 3 is courtesy of FlatTop's top three numbers posted yesterday.

I can say based on recent averages, BsG is still next to hit the "top10", and will do so in about 2 weeks.

Highway to Heaven is still the next most likely show to rise into the Top40; but it is still many weeks away at the current voting rate. No other show is close to keeping up to it.

And I picked up on that ;-)

No sweat, it happens to be a topic of some interest to me. I'll be honest, given how the net was designed, it's amazing it works as well as it does... especially in the sense we can very easily use stuff like NAT via some simple boxes we buy and stick in front of our computers... it works, and for the most part people -don't- need to understand it.

I suppose the short version is: It's hard to tell how many computers are "really" behind the networking hardware (if someone is trying to 'cheat', if they aren't, you can usually make some reasonable guesses), and it's next to impossible to tell how many humans are behind those computers.

Misc obserations... yesterday I confused myself with not having the "middle day data", BsG is a bit less then 4 weeks out to top 10.

Little House and Combat! both seem to be coming on with pretty consistent 350-400 votes.

Buffy is doing nicely with a solid 320-390's. She will likely make top10, but probabably after Ponderosa; then knocking Ponderosa out of the top 10 for a bit.

Star Trek Voyager is making a bit of a hyperleap; they've hopped up to the 360's lately; higher than the other ST shows.

Nominations...
Highway to Heaven is 4th in the nominations and ascending. Hitting about 200/day
Mr. Rogers continues to make a slow rise, recently broke into the top 30 of the nomination poll.
