I've noticed a discrepency in the independents uniforms. In the pilot episode of Firefly Mal pulls a browncoat patch off his lt. shoulder, the flat of the patch & therefore the star faces upward. On Mals coat you see a similar patch (with a black border) with the point up?

So I've been checking around on the net & have found no definative reference to this anomolly, also if they're "Browncoats" what's with the red overlays on the grunts outfits?
