Say "Thank you", Miss Conan.

I'll get my brother eventually. It just may take a bit, what with him living in freakin' Idaho and me having no intention of mailing him my DVDs to borrow.

"You are such a boob."

Just tell him to buy them himself, and if he honestly doesn't like the show after watching all the episodes, you'll buy them from him. It's worked before...

Good. Thanks for the update.

Well let's see two married couples, two co-workers, and one of my gm's, (and three of them were in the 'Firefly game I ran recently) oh, and a complete stranger while at Best Buy...that's eight if my math is right...
With more to come (insert maniacal laughter here.)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Converted another friend this weekend. This guy was a real hold out, which is odd as he is a sci fi fan like me. I tried to loan him the DVDs several times, but he always came up w/ some excuse that he could not watch them.

So, this past Saturday night I invited him over w/ another friend I have already converted. When he showed up, we ordered pizza and sat down and watched "Serenity" & then "Train Job". He liked them so much, we wound up staying up until 3 am to watch four more episodes.

Needless to say he went home w/ discs 3 & 4 so he can watch the rest of the series.

Hey, I just though of something... Do people who are already avid Sci-Fi fans count as converts? They're only too easy to convert.

I am a convert of six people - and it took some doing. :)

All I had to do is nag some of the people to watch it. After that... things sort of took care of themselves.

I do, because this last guy does not like Buffy or Angel and is a die hard Star Wars/Star Trek type and goes for the big flashy battle scenes. He is not much into the lower budget sci fi shows.

Keep in mind too that not all sci fi fans like Firefly, if they did, there would be a lot more of us Browncoats.

That's true I guess.

I met this one guy online who's a huge sci-fi fan but he didn't like Firefly. His reason: No aliens.

In his mind, Firefly wasn't propper Sci-fi... To which I replied and asked him if he didn't think that movies like Bladerunner and Gattaca were sci-fi either then... those movies being void of aliens and all? He never replied. Go figure.

Apparently I'm a bit of a freak because I don't really consider Firefly to be sci-fi. Sure, there's the spaceships, which does tend to put it in the sci-fi category, but I think it's more Western than sci-fi. I don't just mean the clothes or the speech -- it just feels more Western to me than sci-fi. Vague enough for ya?

And HEY! Got another one!
I took disc one over to my friend's house for her birthday, and after The Train Job, she said, "So are you gonna go home and get the other discs?"

Yippee!

"Jayne is a girl's name."

Nono, I can see why you think of it that way. I'm not here to debate the defenition of sci-fi either. There are HUGE influences from westerns, pirate & ninja movies in a lot of the flicks we call classic sci-fi/fantasy (Star Wars... need I say more?).

You can call it a horror-comedy for all I care, as long as you like the show. The problem with this guy was that he couldn't see past the fact that there were no aliens. He couldn't watch and enjoy it as a sci-fi nor a western I guess. And that's just sad.

Oh, I know it's not an issue in debate; I just thought I'd mention it.

I find that kind of weird, really. Sci-fi isn't nearly as structured in its "traditional" contents as alot of other genres, Westerns included. There's alot of wiggle room, as far as premises are concerned, in creating a sci-fi show/movie/book.

Point of interest (perhaps): I did a presentation in film class on how a large percentage of movies can be considered "Westerns" at the very basic level -- and I used Army of Darkness as an example. It actually went over really well..heh.

So far only one. But when she gave my set back to me she had bought her own set. She also took my set to some of her role playing friends and got them hooked about 3 or 4 I think. I also have another coworker who is interested. She likes Buffy and Angel so she should like this as well.

AJ

Got a couple in process at the moment

Also, got a picture of Wash as my avatar on a football discussion board (that's real football, or 'soccer' in American! ), and a couple more people have got interested from that, so a potential four, but only one 'solid' at the moment.

It's perhaps a bit trickier out here in the UK at the moment, but when the region 2 DVDs are out in April....

I bet it did! I mean, what are all those action flicks if not a bunch of cowboys and indians running around shooting at each other?

I did a similar thesis on Star Wars once... except with pirate movie influences on Return of the Jedi. It's really kind of funny when you start to look at Jabba's Sail barge as a pirate ship with gun hatches. Plus... the guy who instructed Mark and the other actors on fencing with the sabers is the same guy who used to teach Errol Flynn. Beat that!

Oh, and I now have two more confirmed converts on my list. Yay!

28. I had to give a persuasive presentation at school and I did 'why Firefly shouldn't have been cancelled.' I used clips from the series to show them and I converted the entire class.

I'll rape you to death.
I'll eat your flesh.
I'll sew your skin into my clothes.
If you're very very lucky, I'll do it in that order - TheReaver

I've only got four so far (husband plus three children), but they can quote most of the dialogue which is worrying. My daughter is telling her high school teacher about it a lot(he's already a Buffy/ Angel fan though), but as AJ says above it will be a lot easier here in the UK when R2 dvds are out, I'm buying a set just for lending out, starting with my sister.
