And Tudyk and Glass cannot or do not sign for reasons that may or may not make any kind of sense. . .

Who would YOU like to see in those roles? Who would 'ease the pain' so to speak?

Me. . .

Seth Green as Wash and Morgan Freeman as Book.

Seth is too young looking to play wash. Morgan Freeman would make a great Book, but would cost way to much to do the part. The budget is said to be around $35 million and Mr Freeman would demand a sizable chunk of that to take the role.

I would rather have Alan and Ron, unless as you said they could not commit for one reason or another.

Personally, just kicking around the idea, I think Owen Wilson would make a good Wash. For Book I like Morgan Freeman in the role.

No no no . . .they're not 'toying' with anything. . .we've just not heard for certain that they've signed. . .they might be in some sort of obligation they can't get out of. This MIGHT be why it'll be winter 2005 before we see the movie. Dunno. I was just toying with the notion, is all.

Yeah- Seth Green's too young, but I'm not sure about Owen Wilson- He's funny, but he's just too laid back I think- You'd have to find someone totally new for that role I think, an undiscovered actor perhaps-
Morgan Freeman would make a great Book-

NOOCYTE

My notion is that if, horror of horrors, neither of them can be in the flick, the story should just work around their temporary absence. For Zoe, it would create some dramatic tension, what with her husband off to do whatever he has to do (and some fun friction with their temp pilot for Not Being Wash). Book could be at the abbey. Worked for Ariel, it could work for the BDM. We might even work in some flashbacks from the series (the difference between the TV and film formats could be disguised with filtering, a la "Out Of Gas," to good visual effect). Indeed, the notion of Mal actually missing Book in times of tribulation would be a cool ironical twist, and could provide another level of his Loss Of faith arc.

Recasting the parts has an air of finality, in that re-re-casting for subsequent ventures would make the Darren Stevens/Roseanne's daughter debacles pale by comparison.

In short, Ron and Alan's absence --while it would be very keenly felt-- would not be a show-stopper, and recasting the roles would not be necessary, IMHO. They can just come back for the next BDM (/series!!).

Keep flyin'!

I was wondering about using other talent from Buffy/Angel.

For example, what about DB Woodside as Wash? He played Principal Woods in Buffy season 7.

Maybe Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) as Book? Or Brian Thompson, who played Luke in Buffy season 1.

Well. . .

I certainly hope I don't come across as condescending or anything, but I just want to be something of a 'voice of reason' here. . .

I'd like to see everyone in the original cast return to the show, but I like to remember that I fell in love with the characters. I would hate to think that anyone would boycott a movie that we've all anticipated so much just because a couple of actors that we've come to appreciate had the good fortune to have other good-paying jobs.

We must remember that Joss and the gang have a somewhat higher purpose in the creation of "Serenity", and that they're going to try to aim the movie not only at the faithful Browncoats, but also to those who have never seen or heard of "Firefly". To those unfortunates who will come to the theatre to fall in love the FIRST time with WASH and BOOK, it won't really matter to them who is playing the role as long as they do it well, and interpret the role in such a way that Joss is satisfied.

That's my 2 cents, anyhow.

I think that Ron Livingston would pull of a Wash that would rival Alan's. He's tall to, so Gina wouldn't have to look down on him. Just might need to change his hair color, as an homage to Alan!

For Book, it's a toughy, if we count out Morgan Freeman (who would do an excellent job, I am sure). Delroy Lindo comes to mind, but not sure if he would be up to par... Maybe get Samuel L Jackson to grow some hair, and make Book even more of a bad mofo?

As just a thought, if Ron Glass was unavailable, and Morgan Freeman showed interest in the part, I am willing to bet that Universal would up the budget to get him in the movie, and also a little extra, as it would probably be a huge draw at the boc office. Adding a little star power isn't ALWAYS a bad thing... :)

If they can't get Ron and Alan for Serenity I think they should just explain that Wash and Book are off doing something else.

Then later Joss could do a movie called "Wash & Book's Excellent Adventure" or is that "Wash & Book's Bogus Journey"?

In all seriousness I wouldn't recast the roles I would just bring them back in the second movie or the series.

Given the premise that MORE characters will be in thee theatrical release, it is likelier that any holes can be filled.

Having said that, I would stipulate that saying "So and so and the preacher on Yikyak four for two months" is incomparably lame-plot wise. You don't do that in a movie as it is totally weak to have to write around.

If Alan and Ron have other commitments, the canon is still intact to my mind. I will happily go see the flick either way.

Firefly is strong enough to suffer those small blows.

I've got to agree I wouldn't like to see them recast it would take away from the movie for me Id be to distracted watching how the new guys fit in and if I didnt like one of them it would ruin it for me. While both book and wash are great characters it would still be easy to do a great story without either of these and then just kinda reintroduce the characters if we return the series or get another movie.

Cast your mind back to Transylvania 6-5000.

EB Jr was great in that movie. THAT is the Wash I see him hypothetically playing. Note the he would be cheap, cheaper than Owen Wilson say, or any other Stars in that look and feel class of people. Of course Alan would be superior, the man can act. All the dreck the Ed got into after T-6-5000 was so terrible my neurons took those memories and sacrificed them to the alcohol poisoning which inetivably followed.

Oh and James Earl Jones over Morgan Freeman any day. Now there is another fellow in that range though, who would be Joe Morton, who is a bit younger than JEJ or Freeman or Glass but still could pull it off. He played Miles Dyson in T2, remember?

edit-nah, ED Jr is too old for Gina.

SINGULARITY

Ok...So in some alternate dimension, on a Bizarro kind o' world, where the making of the movie would not wait just a little bit o' time for the right cast to be available, then I would trust that Joss would not cast anyone that could not meet certain criteria. Namely,
1) Brings a positive energy to the role
2) Works in synergy with the other cast members
3) Just "Gets" who they are playing, and can be true to the role
4) Brings something to the table that benifits the group as a whole.

And remember, Joss picked these actors as much for their talent as their ability to mesh with the rest of the cast.

But just to put my two cents in I think Billy Dee Williams would make a great Book, and the Comic who palyed Uncle Joey on Full House would make a great Wash....Or in another Dimension we would have Joss play Wash...And Book could be played by David Caradine(spelling??) You know the guy from Kung Fu

I agree - Joss is not one to recast roles with different actors. Wasn't Doyle supposed to originally be the character from the Buffy episode that picks Angel up out of the sewers and teaches him to help the slayer? Is the reason that they chose the character Doyle because they couldn't get the original actor?

I forgot about Ed's role in Transylvania 6-5000. Great movie. He was pretty good in that film. I guess when I think of EBJ, I think of him in all the lame movies he did after T 6-5000.

I never considered Joe Morton, but he is an excellent choice. He would be in the right price range and I think he would do the roll justice.

I just found out today Alan Tudyk is well on his way to becoming a possible mega-star. Turns out he has the title role in "I,Robot" staring Will Smith, comming out this July if I recall. Wich means this film may still be shooting. Also he's comming out in another big film "Dodgeball: A True Underdogs Story" (I think I got that last title right).

So I don't know but since Firefly has been up in the air for some time he may have Booked(hyuk!) himself solid. Co-starring with Will Smith I do believe our boy may have hit the big time. All I can say is good for him! I just hope he can do Firefly.

Whistler - exactly! Joss has often firmly stated that there's not going to be anything Buffy without Gellar, and I've never seen him use the same character played by a different actor in one of his own creations (with the possible exception of Swanson/Gellar Buffies - but I'm not really counting BtVS movie as one of his own creations).

I don't know - but I have perfect confidence that Joss would be able to come up with something brilliant if he had to. I think he'll have a lot of those tough calls where he would want to do one thing for the movie and the uninitiated movie goer but can't because of continuity. It's bound to take a lot of creativity to make it work - but if anyone can, it's him

Okay, hubby and I read the thread, and here's our ideas..

Mostly we came up with ideas for Book:

Kris Kristofferson (Whistler from Blade)(and if you don't mind him being white)
Ice-T
Danny John-Jules (he'd need to grey his hair more, but I think he'd be wonderful)

As for Wash, we really only like two people:

Alan Tudyk
and
Sean Astin - big advantage here, 1) he directed Angel, he knows Joss and he's a great guy, plus he's not so big, and Wash needs to be shorter than Zoe (ok, not Seth Green short - no offense, love him, but he's just NOT Wash material) 2) hey - if you advertised "Sam Wise" was in the movie, all the LOTR groupies would flock, and hey, BONUS!

So, that's our 2.5 cents worth (we're worth a little extra cuz there's two of us)

People,

I think we are totally united in our desire to see Alan and Ron back in their respective roles. But let's be realistic: this movie is meant to reinvent the premise as a new franchise, so Joss & Co. will not write around two main characters in order to re-introduce them (rather confusingly) in a second film (that may or may not ever come). If Ron and Alan are unable to resign, the parts *will* be recast. No use moping about it.

My vote for a Book recast: David Keith (maybe he doesn't have the look, but his voice is killer...Goliath, anyone?)

My vote for a Wash recast: Corin Nemec (I'm still ticked off that SG-1 ditched Jonas Quinn)

wow.. good choices.. Corin Nemec stole me as Parker Lewis, and tho I couldn't get into SG-1 (die hard movie fan here, while I think the show is ok, it's ok without me watching it, too - plus, I'm still mad at Sci Fi for the Farscape fiasco.) I didn't know they dumped him - yet another reason to not be happy with Sci Fi.

Wow, David Keith - very cool.

Keanu Reaves can act. He isn't funny. I would be VERY angry if this happened.

I only partly agree. Keanu Reeves can't act and isn't funny. Better keep him in movies where he only needs one or two facial expressions. I'd be furious were he cast - but he's fortunately much too expensive for Serenity.

Again, I think it extremely likely that they're both going to sign on when they can, but if they didn't, recasting is something Joss really hasn't been a big fan of. I don't think they'll need to be reintroduced in a second film, as from what I gather a reviving of Firefly the series is the most likely continuation of the film - and having a few people in the series and not on the big screen is not an impossibility imho. Rather than recasting, I think new characters would be added - but really, a series like Firefly already has too many characters compared to what you can comfortably introduce and give due credit to in a movie, so some characters will probably have more promoinent roles than others anyway, and being a few short may not be a disaster.

I honestly can't imagine anyone else as Wash or Book. Well, Freeman maybe, but he lacks the funky greyish, poofy hair.

You're hilarious. Sadist.
