Whenever any TV show dawns the bigscreen it has the unfortunate burden of having to introduce the characters to those not familiar to the show as well as appease to those fans of the show and not bore them by having to reintroduce the characters.

Firefly will have it doubly hard, as it did not have the time to develop as large a fan base as other shows dawning the bigscreen and not only will it have to introduce the characters, but also, as its TV running was cut short, it will have to introduce the storyline as well.

I trust Joss's ability to do this, its not impossible to do.

Other shows have down well to introduce characters and backstories to non-audiences. Though I thought the movie horrible, David Duchovni's shpeel at the bar about being the center of a government conspiracy was one of the best backstory introductions I've ever seen. Likewise, Star Trek did a good job introducing the Borg in lieu of captain picard in first contact.

I see firefly introducing the backstory in a comical manor for the viewers and non-viewers alike. Probably some conversation between Mal and Simon.

Mal to Simon looking bewildered/scared:
"I want you off my ship! You and your sister have brought us nothing but trouble. First you get the alliance after us wanting to find your sister to play around with her brain some more. Now we's got some space crazy canibalistic reavers lookin' for us, thinkin' that a telepathic girl might be their next queen. Now I thought at first that keepin' you here might be for the greater good, but your sisters gone and pulled the last straw... she's gone and sullied up my boots."
Simon "I'll clean the boots"
Mal "The better be right and shinny"

Haha. Anyways. So how do you think Whedon will introduce the backstory to the general audience? Heck maybe if Whedon reads some of this he may use some of our ideas.

Serenity is the crew's home, so I'm supporting your comical manor theory.

Now, Joss could go the route of comical manner ... We could see Jayne pouring out his woes to Kaylee over some mudder's milk.

Jayne: That lunatic River done threw up in my bed again. Damn doctor better get her in hand. I told the Captain that the next Alliance cruiser we come across, I'm going to go up on the rutting hull and wave them down to fetch the mind-readin` freak.

Kaylee: Now Jayne, you know the Captain don't like it when we go up on the hull and wave down passing ships. Last time we did that, gorram Reavers almost ate the Shepherd's hair. Heck, you lost that perty hat your mother knit for ya.

Inara approaches in something gorgeous: Have either of you seen Mal? This backwoods rock doesn't even have a temple ... how am I supposed to make a living as a companion?"

Jayne: "I got some wobbly headed geisha dolls left over from the last job we pulled. I'll take payment in trade."

Inara: Something withering and humorous in Chinese whilst Zoe slaps Jayne on the back of the head.

Zoe: "Mind your mouth, Jayne. It's liable to get you in a condition less than alive."

"Just keep walkin, preacher man."

It seems to me that, although good, neither of the dialogues professed above would do. There is a stagering ammount of information that needs to be conveyed.

Everything in the intro

-earth that was
-the terraformation of planets
-the formation of the alliance
-the fight against the alliance and loss to them
-the fact that most of the crew fought on the losing side
-how the outer planets were left with little to build with

Then all the other stuff

-The alliance tinkering with Rivers mind
-how the firefly crew are bascically scavenger pirates
-Reavers, what they are, how they got that way

There's probably allot more, but I see these as really the main running plot elements

Keep Flyin'

You know, how 'bout a prologue at the start of the film that introduces the setting?

And to introduce the characters, flashbacks could also be used. (to great extent with simon and river)

Heck, the original Star Wars just had a whole load of writing as a backstory!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Who is to say that they have to cram all of the history into the opening of the movie. They could easily have a narrative at the opening to kind of set the stage and give a broad overview of the setting, then maybe have a flashback/dream sequence for Mal about Serenity Valley.

Lots of ways they can go with it. I am sure Joss will get it right. So long as Hollywood execs don't go & screw w/ things.
